Had this on tap at Iron fist

Review is from notes

A: The beer pours a semi clear to light hazy golden straw yellow color, with a small quarter of an inch of white head, that pretty much sat on top most for the most part. Light lacing on the glass.

S: I get scents of light apples or pear, light hops, and some sweet bread malt.

T: A light crisp orange citrus flavor up dront, with a solid bready malt undertone in the middle, with a yeasty dry finish.

M: Light to medium mouth, with medium carbonation and a dry finish

O: Clean, refreshing, though I've yet a Kolch that wasnt, (I'm sure their out there) good easily have more than one, but it's not too complex for me. Good start, or palatee cleanser in a tasting flight for me.

A: Pale, cloudy golden color with a puffy head that lasts pretty nicely. Good lacing as well.

S: Pale malts, a bit of grassy hops and some pear.

T: This doesn't have fantastic reviews for some reason, but I thought it was pretty decent. It has some nice spiciness along with the pale malts and a pretty good pop from the hops that leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. I'd say it's worth a try.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into my Uerige stick.

Faintly hazy sunglow liquid (I suppose this is unfiltered so I won't dock too much for the lack of clarity) topped by a half finger of soft magnolia foam. Light sticky lacing, excellent retention.

Light winter fruit (apples and pears) in the nose - tart and subdued. Faintly floral note, though not much if any malt.

Delicate malt in the palate entry, though this gives way to wave of minerals, white grapes, and apple skins. Slightly grassy, well attenuated, slightly dry finish - some hops peek out from behind the semblance of fruit, though they don't seem to contribute much bitterness.

Light-bodied, yet creamy, with a soft but lasting carbonation.

An easy style to get wrong I think, and Iron Fist presents this one free of off notes. I was sort of expecting more of a blonde ale, with an emphasis on malt, but I'm pleased to report that this beer is about as close to a proper Kölsch as I've had from a domestic producer (excepting 32/50). As others have mentioned this isn't the best value though...

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a medium gold with a solid white head, some fair lacing.

S: Bready malts, white grapes and pears. Fruity.

T: Dry bready malts dominate with a good fruit flavour. Kolsch "grapes", some light apple and pear, is well made to style.

M: Light-bodied, crisp, fairly smooth.

D: A nice Kolsch, my first from Iron Fist. Well made and to style, not mind-blowing in any way at all. Solid drinking beer, frankly I don't get the bottle prices, glad I got to try it on-tap.

Anemic slightly sweet beerish stuff.

Giant stiff beehive of a head in a tall pilsener and a shorter glass. Totally foams up, though it doesn't dissipate like foamers usually do. Very flat in the mouth, though. On the cloudy side. Totally lacks crispness, which is why you would bother with a pale undistinguished sort of ale. Still, after it warms up it has some decent flavors. Faint hint of hops. More malty than a German Kolsch, I would think.

Quite drinkable, but carbonation melts in your glass, not in your mouth. More like decent extract homebrew. Utterly forgettable.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy, golden orange, bright yellow in color with a decent one-inch head that goes down to a thin lacing as it warms up.

Smell: Has that malty "earthy" smell that I refer to as the "barnyard".

Taste & Mouthfeel: If I went on smell alone, I wouldn't expect too much from the taste, but I was pleasantly surprised. Very light in body, smooth in it's execution and crisp. Slightly bitter in the aftertaste. Malty in character...almost has a bubble gum quality toward the end. Not too shabby.

Drinkability: Quite easy to drink, especially on a hot day as the one today. While it's not the most extraordinary Kolsch style that I've tried, it is a very solid beer that's worth a try.

At Small Bar into a pint glass

A - Very clear yellow with a nice thick head. Pretty much dead on for a kolsh.

S - Bready malts with a little bit of german hops coming thu.

T - Clean and fresh with plenty of bready pale malts. Yeast kinda kills it to me...its like a belgian homebrew (likely WL550 or the like). Still close to being true to style but the yeast was just kinda plain and didn't match the malt profile.

M - Clean and freshing as per the style.

D - While it looks and feels great, I'm not happy with the yeast profile on this one. Its almost like a mail order recipe or something, clearly this is not the result of experimentation and refinement on the part of the brewer.

11/21/10

On tap at Iron Fist.

A: Appears slightly hazy straw yellow gold with a white head.

S: Light pear and orange notes with some grainy malt and a mild sulfuric quality. Light noble hop bouquet

T: Moderate noble hop bitterness with light pear notes and some yeastiness. There's a little sweetness, but on the whole the beer is quite dry. Malt is grainy and subdued. The finish is crisp and clean.

M: Light bodied with a crisp and dry mouthfeel. Carbonation is at a lower high level.

Overall: This is on the upper end of the ABV spectrum for the style, but it still manages to be light and refreshing. This was the best beer I sampled from Iron Fist.

On-tap at Iron Fist

A: The pour is a hazy golden yellow color with a thin white head.

S: A lot of orange notes come through on the nose, both in terms of fruit flesh and the peel. There's a fair amount of yeastiness to this too.

T: Far more bitter than you'd expect for a blonde/kolsch. A moderate amount of bready sweetness along with the same strong orange character exhibited in the nose. Fairly "heavy" for this sort of beer, but I'm not exactly complaining.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: They call this a kolsch, but I don't know if that's necessarily the best classification for it. In any event, nice flavors and pretty easy to drink.
