I tried this beer at the brewery on tap, and thought it was good, but not necessarily exceptional. Nonetheless, I bought a bottle and took it home and kept it in the fridge for a few months for an occasion to share the big bottle. Much to my surprise, upon crackin it open, the taste and feel seem to have been much improved. I'm usually a dark Belgian fan, but this is a golden that I would definitely get again. Very rich, complex taste the second time around, much more akin to what you would expect from a true belgain style brew. Taste is sweet and nutty, but not overpowering. Feel is very nice, at least from the bottle. Not much head, but still well balanced. Very pleased with the improvement of a little bottle conditioning.

A: a deep, dark brownness that begs to be drank... although my wife doesn't like beer, this is by far her favorite color

S: some darker fruits, hint of chocolate, with a bit of carmel going on... mellow malt-hop blend that makes this a very pleasant botle to open..

T: where the nose leads, the palate follows. A great tasting dubble..some caremal w/ a hint of chocolate...blended with raisny-plum fruit notes... a nice little complex sipper!!

M: My mouth said yes! A great bodied beer here.

O: Although I can't buy it in Illinois, I'm glad I was able to get one out here -- Thanks Chris! Looking forward to trying the other Iron Fist offerings that were waiting for me on the doorstep after work... A beer, and brewery, it appears to keep an eye out for as I'm sure you'll enjoy-

** Sidenote: Each of my colleagues whom I've shared the bottle with today has enjoyed a new brew from the Westcoast... witha smile!

On tap at Iron Fist Brewing Company in Vista, CA.

Pours a murky dark brown with a tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruits, and brown sugar. Taste is of malt and brown sugar with a dark fruit finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good dubbel with some nice aromas and flavors.

Amber with just a tinge of red and dusty clarity. Small off white head of half a finger with minimal retention and flakes of lacing.

Malt forward molasses and toffee not too syrupy or cloying. Rich candied dates and plum with a bready pie crust and Belgian yeast adds a tinge of powder and attic must.

The same as the nose, fairly malty without being overly sweet. Tightly wound caramel and brown sugar, not a hint of graininess. Dried red fruit, cherries and plums with a spice bill including coriander and a steely powdery twinge. Lingering phenols.

Medium carbonation and a slightly hefty body, the malt sticks to the palate like glue. Alcohol is warming and occasionally rears up.

As an American Dubbel this is pretty good, a tasty and not cloying malt bill with enough dark fruit esters to keep things lively. Not something that can compete with a Trappist brew but my Belgian itch has been stated.

Poured into Bruery Tulip

A- very pretty red/orange color, red in the middle and orange where the light bends around the sides. almost no head and a little bit of foam around the edge lasting for a long time.

S- A lot of malt with some spice, with peanuts and a lot of peanuts in the smell, very strange but enticing.

T- Malt, almost pumpkin spice mixed with peanut butter and some hop bitterness that runs away fast. no booze here very lite and a refreshing new flavor.

M- Lite mouthfeel it has very lite carbonation and leaves a slight coating but its very thin, leaving soon.

O- Good and lite, I could drink this again, its interesting and a different from the norm for me. Its good enough to drink again.

Had this on tap at Iron Fist Brewery.

Review is from notes

A: The beer pours a dark mahogany brown with a ruby red hue. A half inch of off white head rose, then quickly settled, leaving light mild lacing.

S: I get whiffs of dark fruits, figs, dates, earthy hops, mild dark cacao, and Belgian yeast.

T: A bit more bread and caramel malts here upfront then the nose, but the dark fruit characters, plums, raisins, and yeast qualities come through in the middle, along with a slight dry hop bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is well melded in the flavors as well.

M: Light to medium carbonation, with medium to creamy mouth feel.

O: Pretty good. I enjoyed this style from their offerings, personally, bit more going here then some of the lighter sytles I've had from Iron fist, although those were soild as well. The yeast flavors are pretty consistent in their beers, but that's a good thing to me, since it provides a unique flavor profile, that is recognizable.
