Amber in color. Moderate light tan head.

Smells like toffee/caramel, toasted grains, and light coffee.

The coffee flavor is a little more prominent in flavor than aroma, but still fairly subtle. You get it up front and in the finish, but it lets the beer come through in between. I would guess it’s an English malt base because while it tastes like an Amber Ale, it definitely has some English Barleywine qualities. Fairly rich with a lot of caramelized sugars and toffee. Also some toasted bread and some light hop bitterness.

Body is fairly thin, bordering on watery for the ABV, but it works alright with the flavors.

A refreshingly different take on a coffee beer as they all seem to be stouts most of the time. Enjoyable beer.

12 fl oz can:

"Coffee ale." 7.1% ABV. Brix 18. IBU 30. SRM 12.

AROMA: Coffee. Brown malt. Hazelnut.

TASTE: Caramalt, pale malt sweetness, coffee roast, hazelnut, some kind of flavour additive. Its coffee character is wanting, lacking the expressiveness and depth one would look for in a top tier coffee beer of any style.

Balanced, though, and it does hide its ABV well.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium to full-bodied, well-carbonated. Not astringent, harsh, boozy, or otherwise problematic.

OVERALL: It's a decent ale for what it is, but it does have a somewhat artificial taste and the coffee character just isn't standout. Still, it's probably the best beer I've had from Ranger Creek - for what little that means.

$ 1.70(Including tax and discount)/12 oz can ($ 0.142/oz) from Total Wine-Forum, Selma, TX. Reviewed 3/18/19.
“11/09/18” stamped on can bottom. On shelf at store. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Orange, translucent.
Head – Average (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), cream, low density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular six to eight mm ring and a thin layer with a few rocky islands.
Lacing – Good. Some crenulated towers of mostly tiny and a few small bubbles provide a fantasy landscape.
First pour – Amber, clear.
Aroma – 4 - Toffee.
Flavor – 4.25 – Definitely toffee and mild coffee. No alcohol (7.1% ABV), no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 – Surprisingly, the coffee plays a weak second to the toffee from the malt and English yeast. This is right on the cusp of the sweet/bitter curve. A pleasant surprise.

a really unique english strong or red type ale with coffee. its a very distinctive brew with the english malt and yeast profile allowed to exist here, uncommon in coffee beer in my experience, which seems more of a phenomenon in american styles than anything else. the beer is a medium amber color with a little haze to it and a tall tan head with excellent retention. it smells like coffee first, with the roast and a dry baking cocoa note as well, boldly dosed, but low acid, probably a cold brew blended in, but i dont know for sure. the english yeast is nice in here with the coffee, a breadiness about it is very appropriate, and even the warming hearty almost baked malt seems right, not nearly as heavy or as alcoholic as i thought it would be when i start drinking it either. smooth in feel, the coffee is chocolate forward, and the grain has some brown sugar character without finishing too sweet. the english yeast is perfect, it unites the coffee and the malt, and it keeps the beer balanced and mellow and sort of classic tasting, even though this combination of flavors is new to me. uplifting carbonation is a cool touch too, my lady and i really enjoyed sipping on this one and playing some cards out in their little patio area here. a very clever coffee beer here!

Poured into tulip from bottle, monster 3 finger light tan head, took about 1 minute to pour the whole bottle. Slowly fades to a soapy 1/2 finger head that hangs around, nice lacing. Turbid amber in the glass. Smells of coffee, caramel malt and slight roasted malt. Taste is initially coffee, smooth and not bitter or acidic, fades into caramel, and some lactose sweetness. Has a mild sweet finish and a little alcohol on the finish. Bitterness is just right on this, leaving you with a nice smooth sweetness on the finish. Will say that this beer doesn't hide it's abv well, but it is getting kinda chilly and it actually works pretty well with the sweetness. This bottle was brewed back in December of 2015 and the coffee held up really well

Sunday Morning Coming Down
Poured at 50°F from a 12oz bottle (bottled January 2016) into a nonic pint glass. Consumed on 09Jul16.
SMELL: Strong aromas of earthy coffee and peaches are backed by mild fig, plum, and caramel aromas. Subtle aromas of pears, white grapes, strawberries, blueberries, earthy hops, and spicy hops intensify the unique complexity of the brew.
TASTE: Strong flavors of earthy coffee and peach contrast and clash to create a bizarre, yet pleasant first sip. Mild caramel flavors fuse with the initial flavors to augment the uniqueness as peach flavors grows slightly stronger. The taste profile is joined by more fruity goodness as mild flavors of fig and plum along with subtle pear, strawberry, blueberry and white grape flavors enter mid-palate. Mild earthy hop flavors and subtle flavors of spicy and bitter hops debut lastly as pear and white grape flavors grow slightly stronger while all other flavors press on.
NOTE: I have to admit that my review does not do this brew justice. The thought of combining coffee with peaches is not the most appealing taste when pictured mentally. Throw in some berries, grapes, and pears, and the mental imagery does not become any better. Yet, Ranger Creek somehow pulled this off. What further surprised me was the fact that the coffee was as strong as it was given that this bottle was about six months old. Definitely worth a try if you can get your hands on one!
