This pours a dark brown with a billowy foam topping. It has a light lactic (milk stout) aroma but one that doesn’t give much of an indication as to how much strawberry will be on the flavor. I like surprises.

This one definitely surprised, in a good way. The flavor has a light lactic tartness to it with a nuanced strawberry sweetness and a mellow roastiness which ties it all together. Creamy, smooth, just enough but not too sweet. I found this really enjoyable. Made it a sipper and it held up even as it warmed. Now can I have another?

(from notes)

Look- Near black, capped with a half-finger of beige foam that sticks to the sides of the glass, moderate amount of lacing.

Smell- Nutty with a hint of fruity sweetness. Promising.

Taste- Starts off with dark malt and a bit of pseudo-citric bitterness before a sweet berry flavor shows itself. Finishes with biscuit and heavy cream. Aftertaste is akin to gingerbread with a touch of pink lemonade, fading to nondescript sweet berry after a while. Lives up to the name's promise, but doesn't go overboard with the fruitiness. Good mix of sweet, roasty, and tart/bitter flavors. Surprisingly tasty.

Mouthfeel- Light to medium body, prickly carb comes out on the sip. Smooth on the swallow. Light dryness on the finish, not cloying or treacly as some milk stouts can be. I'd like it to be more substantial-feeling, but it's a minor gripe.

Overall- Unique and pretty darn tasty. Very well put together. Not something I would pick up regularly, but I'll keep an eye out for it nonetheless. Definitely recommended.

Strawberry Milk Stout on draught at Flying Saucer Austin
Ranger Creek
20130616
Tap to a Goblet (13.5oz probably)

A - A dark oak brown, opaque and uniform. A little head that dissipated.

S - Like a strawberry milkshake, a nice thick one. There's some maltiness and sweetness like a brown sugar. This is covered by a little strawberry layer, quite nice. I pick up some cocoa and leather now.

T - A normal slightly roasted low-ABV stout. Needed to warm a little to allow the strawberrry to come through, on the backend mostly. Still very slight. I pick up some cocoa and a clear light roast presence now.

M - Heavy-medium bodied, not quite smooth. It's tingly on the tip of the tongue, but smooth on the back of the tongue. I quite like it.

D- Smells like the name, but the taste isn't quite what I think it should be. With some warmth we get more strawberry, but I think I'd like it a little stronger. Overall a good stout, and it plays to my preference of lightly roasted stouts (sorry coffee fans).
4.25, 4.25, 4, 4, 4.

I must say, after some more time, the taste more closely matched the strawberry milkshake smell profile. I'm getting more strawberry on the tongue, all over the tongue really. The mouthfeel is still this hybrid tingly-smooth that I'm unexpectedly digging.
I do not know if I should upgrade the taste points to 4.25. It did take quite some time for this to emerge (roughly 35 minutes by my count).

Poured into a pint glass at the flying saucer in San Antonio.

It pours jet black with a thin tan head that quickly fades to a ring around the side of the glass. Its not much to look at, but its black so what more can you ask for, it's a stout. I guess I was disappointed in the head retention. The aroma was kind of muted at first but as I waited for the glass to warm it picked up. Fresh chocolate, roasted grains and a hint of fresh strawberries in the nose. The taste is much better then last year. There is a very distinguishing line between the stout and the strawberries. Up front is chocolate and roasted grains and the finish is fresh strawberries. The mouth feel is medium body with medium carbonation and a dry finish. They do a really good job of giving you chocolate and fresh strawberries. I'm glad the strawberries do not come out sweet or sour in this beer and preserve their natural taste. Overall I enjoy this beer from Ranger Creek and will continue to drink it while its available.
