I'm trepidatious given the brewery - whose beers tend to be subpar. But Every Beer Gets A Chance. 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and silver pry-off pressure cap purchased at Whole Foods HQ and served cold at low altitude in Austin, TX into a pilsner glass. 5.30% ABV. 23 IBU. 40 SRM. 15.5 Plato.

Allowed to come to room temperature over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1.5 finger wide head. Good-looking tan colour head. Nicely creamy and thick. Good consistency and nice soft complexion. Light lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is above average - about 3 minutes.

BODY: Opaque black. Ample visible floating particles are visible; I can't tell if it's yeast or some kind of berry bit particulate. It's certainly intriguing. Not a solid or an ink black.

Overall, the head could be creamier, fuller, and darker,, and the body could be opaque, but I'm intrigued. It has my attention, and I'm hoping it delivers on the premise.

AROMA: Dark malts and chocolate malts lend it ample sweetness, and the strawberries complement the chocolate very well. I'm surprised the strawberries don't come off artificial, but then they don't exactly come across fresh or genuine either. The fruity sweetness is divine coupled with the chocolate, and the complementary cream and lactose sugar help. I'm surprised at how appealing this is given the brewery. It's a pleasant aroma of above average strength. Could Ranger Creek have actually brewed a solid beer?

TASTE: ...Nope. There's an awful metallic off-note throughout, which really turns me off. What little strawberry there is tastes artificial and extract-y. Bland chocolate malts and a bit of roasted barley get(s) buried beneath the dominant metallic off-note. Yeah, this is pretty poorly executed. Harsh and difficult to drink. Burnt and charred. Ashy. Ugh. It's off-putting.

Poor depth and duration of flavour. Average flavour intensity.

This is a horribly imbalanced, poorly conceived beer that frankly shouldn't even be on the market. What're they thinking with that off-character?

TEXTURE: Coarse, ashy, dry, dragging, rough, and overbearing on the palate. HARSH. Also a bit stale. I won't be surprised if I wake up tomorrow with a dead taste bud. This assaults the palate in the worst of ways. Very unpleasant. Not at all the smooth, creamy, soft, wet, comforting texture it should be.

OVERALL: In damn near any other brewery, this wouldn't get past quality control. The metallic note is so prominent, this would be a good beer to have on-hand in a fermentation sciences 101 class to teach students what a metallic note tastes like. The premise is fantastic, but the execution is awful. When I do my best to try to ignore the metallic notes, I can sense there're some nice elements buried in the flavour profile, but it's difficult to do. Not sure why (or how) this even made it to market.

As much as I dislike it, I can't in good conscience say it's not worth trying. I desperately wish this beer delivered on its premise, and there are some nice notes in play here, but it just gets ruined by the metallic character. It's infuriating how good this beer could be. Not undrinkable.

In a snifter.

A- Dark khaki fluffy head. Pitch black body. 4

S- Dark chocolate, milky strawberry with a bit of synthetic aroma. 3.5

T- Very synthetic strawberry flavor, then pleasant dark chocolate and dark roast flavor. 3

M- There's a good dry, bitter finish, but the synthetic strawberry screws up this beer and gives some unpleasantness up front. 2.75

Overall, the bad messes up the good on this beer. It's below average.

A-Black in the glass, one finger off white head

S-Semi artificial strawberries, tad bit of chocolate but not much else.

T-Strawberries that are artificial, very artificial. Some chocolate bu the strawberries dominate.

M-Medium bodied, not much carbonation and watery.

O-If the strawberries weren't so artificial the beer would have been good.

A nice brew from the folks down the road in San Antonio. They used over 500 lbs of hand cut strawberries from Poteet, TX to craft this stout. A pretty inventive way to support the use of local ingredients. I grabbed a four pack from a local convenience store & gave it a try. The stout is black in color w/ a thin, tan head. It smells of roasted malt & chocolate. I didn't pick up any strawberry in the aroma unfortunately. For a milk stout, the lactose taste was fairly light. The chocolate & roastiness of the malt shine through with a little twinge of the strawberry at the end. It has a nice medium body & is very drinkable. I was able to pick up the strawberry flavor more as I got deeper into the 4-pack. Solid brew & I will be buying this again when available.
