A real sticky, super-charged red ale.

Sampled 1702, Tucson; February 2012
The beer arrives from the tap with a hazy, red amber color and is topped by a pale tan colored head. The aroma smells of crystal malt, lots of pine, and sharper herbal hop citrus character. As the beer warms up more of the citrus / hop fruit character becomes noticeable with ruby red grapefruit zest, definite lychee and bright, almost candied, caramelized orange zest all being quite noticeable.
The beer is nicely bitter up front and is amply hoppy, this is backed by supporting toasted and crystal malt laden flavors that play a supporting role. Lots of candied citrus, big tangelo flavors, ruby red grapefruit, pine, and lots of herbal hop notes play the dominant role in this beer. This is really quite amply hoppy; it has just enough malt character to move the hops along. The malt is somewhat noticeable and contributes flavors of toasty, nutty malt notes, as well as some spicy whole grain touches and a chewy crystal malt character. The body is nice, certainly a touch chewy, but not overly heavy and it keeps a quaffability to it.
This is a nice, easily quaffable, enjoyable, good hop fix (for those who crave that)without too much intruding malt to keep this from being a hop focused beer.

Served at the Lumberyard brewpub in Flagstaff.
A: Looks good: crystal clear reddish-brown; more red than brown with a good, long lasting off-white head that leaves excellent lacing patterns. The aroma has some sweet, bready malt ad is quite hoppy: floral and spicy/herbal. The flavor is also hoppy, but with more pine as well as a solid sweet malt base. High ABV is well hidden except in the slightly harsh mouthfeel and the inevitable warming. Medium body.
O: A fine Imperial Red worth seeking out. Available on tap and in 22 oz. bottles.

Appearance: Pours a clear auburn color with an impressive head; nice stickage with plenty of lacing action
Smell: Caramel and tobacco, with undertones of herbacious spruce
Taste: The crystal malt bill overwhelms, with the caramel and tobacco and a hint of apricot; in the middle, the herbal spruce flavors arrive and while the beer brings a lot of bitterness, the malts are so overpowering that the hops are ultimately left in the dust
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body (slightly syrupy) with moderate carbonation
Overall: I have no idea how old this bottle might be (but I didn't hold onto it for long before I cracked it open) but I am not getting the massive hops that others seem to have tasted; to me, this beer verges on the Old Ale/Strong Ale territory more than the world of Imperial Reds; in any event, the flavors are very different and, as I don't like a lot of malt in my hoppy beers (unless we are talking Impy Stouts) this is not my thing
Thanks, mikedR (from the other site), for the opportunity

22oz bottle. There is no date listed, but I have had since the Winter. Maybe like January. Poured into a Russian River goblet.
A: Pours a dark amber color. Basically no head, this might be due to the age. Just a ring of bright white color. Carbonation was OK.
S: Spicy maltiness. Definitely still some hop character. Some spicy piney hop aromas. The malt bill definitely leads here.
T: Front of the tongue, lots of spicy hop notes. Peppery. Middle of the mouth lots of those typical red ale malts. It's a really nice balance. Even though this bottle isn't as fresh as I'd like, you still get some good hop flavors.
M: Medium bodied.
