Pours into a 1/2 liter stein a light straw color with a large blooming bone white head that settles very slowly into a frothy mass leaving broken globs of lace behind.A bit grilled pineapple and toasted grain mainly in the nose, the smoke is light.A nice fuller feel with the carbonation not getting in the way.An interesting but I have to say a little strange palate, pretty sweet from the the grilled pineapple with some smoky "meatiness" wich makes for an odd combo,a light drying toastiness in the finish.Well I wanted to drink something light today to enjoy outside on this 70 degree day but I also wanted something with character....this has it,maybe a little too much character in fact.

Pulling into Terrapin Beer Co.'s station is Pineapple Express, the winner of our first annual Employee Homebrew Challenge. Inspired by a late night grilling session with friends, a couple chunks of pineapple got thrown into the mix, and an idea for a new beer style was born. The team brewed up a Helles lager for the base brew and used real pineapple and smoked malt to conduct the winning recipe." Brewed in the style of a German Münich Helles Lager with pineapple and smoked malt added. Entry number 21 in the side project series, released in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft early 2014.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Terrapin snifter. Served above 55º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy lemon-tinged white head over a hazy golden yellow body. Dense speckled sediment and dense haze impede clarity. Retention is good, lacing is light and spotty. 3.75

(Smell) There's no mistaking pineapple and other fleshy tropical fruits are front and center in the aroma. Secondary notes include biscuity pale German malts, a pinch of smoked malt and a modest grassy hop bitterness. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Cracker malt profile with a mild dryness and light sweetness paired with a grassy hop profile and a moderate bitterness. The unique flavors come through in the finish with a pinch of smoke and some charred pineapple, neither profound nor underwhelming. I personally think that the malt and hop base of this style were ideal for these two additives, as they shine wonderfully against the simplicity of a lager yeast strain and generate a moderate acidity and smokiness that I enjoy. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, chewy, light. Carbonation generates a moderate crispness for a soft, fluffy mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly acidic and dry over sweet, smokey and bitter characteristics. Alcohol presence is light with no off flavors. 3.5

(Overall) I don't get enough beers that dabble with pineapple, but this one does a pretty good job at blending pineapple and smoke to a style that keeps ingredients fairly light and simple, thus the pineapple and smoke are difficult to miss and quite enjoyable. I didn't find much to dislike about this beer personally but it didn't blow me away either. The pineapple, smoke and malt/hop profile were right on par with my expectations. I could see why this was at least justified to win a brewery-level competition. 3.5

650ml bottle poured into an unlabeled snifter 6/2/2014.

A- Slightly cloudy straw yellow body, one finger white head with good retention, sticky lacing. Looks positively refreshing.

S- Lots of nice breadiness and noble hops. I thought instantly Munich Helles due to my time in Munich, although there is a very subtly tart fruity note to it.

F- Crisp, bready pale malts, earthy and floral hop notes, a very very subtle bit of smokiness to the bread (not burnt bread, but lets go with slightly singed) that I did not get in the nose at all. A more noble hoppy finish without much interference. This isn't bad, but it's not much better than average. I have no idea where the pineapple is.

M- Medium to thinner bodied, crisp and refreshingly dry. Well carbonated. Finish is more or less slightly smoky noble hop flavours that linger for a decent amount of time.

O- Interesting concept, but I didn't get a ton of smoke or pineapple here although they were there enough to be noticed. If I were to treat this as a simple Helles, this is about average in comparison to both the American and German-made examples of the style.

I will admit I let this sit in the fridge for a while, trying to find a time to be in the mood for it. Not being a fan of fruit beers or smoked beer, this seemed doomed to failure. However, I actually found it to be a decent beer. Neither the fruit nor smoke are overpowering.

The look is a little on the cloudy side and perhaps a bit tan of being a nice pale yellow. I get trace hints of both in the nose, but the grain and lager scents are more prevalent. The flavor is very similar to the smell, with the pineapple (could be a bit like mango, also) coming through a little more. The smoke is very subtle to me and comes through almost as (uncharred) oak, when combined with the light bittering hops. There is a little depth to the lager, in my mind, but it stays fairly light overall.
