Picked this up in Totowa last week, having never had this before. Most of their beers were quite good but something was amiss with this one. Even though it was fresh and good until July of this year, It felt a bit too weak and watery without being notable when it came to the taste or mouthfeel.

This had a dark pour to this - much more so than I would has expected, as the ruddy reddish-brown hue was not quite clear. Not a thick head to this and the carbonation was more present in the taste than to the eye. Some tropical fruits in the nose with a lot of rye and caramel malt behind it in the taste. Both of those didn't linger long as the mouthfeel felt quite watered-down and the hops only came out a bit in the aftertaste. Was this skunked? Probably not but it almost tasted that way and the IPA just seemed to be missing from all of this once I finished it and let it sink in.

There's a slight alcohol presence here but nothing that blew me away in terms of taste or strength. While not a bad beer, this was underwhelming and with so many IPA's out there, the only distinctive aspect to this beer was the rye. While not grainy, there could have been more "bite" to this and had there been, I would have enjoyed it much more so. It's fine to try once but certainly not the best of what Terrapin currently brews.

A: Very dark copper red in color. Almost brown. Still a bit translucent. Clear from what I can tell. Forms a smallish, bubbly, odd-sort-of-green-brown tinted colored head. Lots of lacing.

S: Aroma smells sort of like a fart. (my mosaic home-brew smelled something like this when it got to be about 6 months old) There is a bit of blueberry, citrus, caramel malt, and wheat bread.

T: The taste is no better. There is a distinctly "fermented" taste to this beer. Caramel malt, molasses, berries. Faint sweetness. Raisins. Even a little hint of chocolate. Slight rye spice.

M: On the heavier side of medium. Light sweetness. Restrained bitterness. Appropriate carbonation.

O: Sort of an odd beer. As I mentioned above, my personal experience with Mosaic is that this is how it tastes when it gets old. Not sure when this one was bottled so I don't know how old the beer is, but the bottle says it's good until 7/14. Thankfully I was able to pick this one up as a single.

Has a best by date of late 07/14

Appearance - Pours a semi-clear, deep red copper with a near 2-finger khaki colored head. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of surface suds. Leaves rings of lacing down the glass, with great stick.

Smell - Hmm, smell is a bit odd. Earth and a light tart tropical fruit; kinda like a pineapple slice that's been rolled around in some dirt. Not a good combo.

Taste - Flavor is a bit hollow; touches on citrus and pineapple hops with a sturdy caramel backbone, but the bulk of the flavor is lost almost as quickly as it hits, leaving behind only faint traces of said character and an almost too-easy-to-miss peppery rye aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Nothing too notable, but a decently smooth drinker.

Overall - Yeah, not feeling it. Seems to lack cohesive flavor, and what is there is quite fleeting. Probably not the best use of mosaic hops, which seemed overwhelmed by the malts... but then those seemed a bit subdued as well. Hmm.

12 ounce bottle -> snifter

A - deep amber pour with a towering frothy off white head, good retention, and good lacing.

S - nose is very subtle, but there are citrus, bread, and earthy notes present.

T - nice sweet honey malt presence with a lemony/grapefruity note. Finish is a clean pine and rye bitter.

M - medium thick, medium carbonation, slight aftertaste

O - Pretty good limited offering from Terrapin.
