Cloudy mahogany brown. My snifter hugged out about two fingers of bone-colored head. Laces like a keeper.

Fresh nose with orange peel, dark plummy fruit, dunkel wheat richness, chocolate shavings, carob powder, fusel alcohol, floral hop bitterness, bubblegum, pine, and perfumey mint. Very strange nose. Not ideal weizenbock sniffin'. As it warms, the chocolate gets a little darker, a little more bitter, a little more mysterious.

Clearly, we're missing malt richness. This beer is still perfumey with tart fragrant dried orange peels and flowery hop yield. The dark wheatiness is bready, but overtaken by the spices. Clove, raisin, and some browned banana, but otherwise, the yeast needed to eat its Wheaties. Even the alcohol note looks naked in the limelight.

The carbonation separates from the beer a little. It's a good level, but it's on the coarse side. You can feel the bubbles. Body is just light of hefty. Booze is moderate.

Chocolate Orange Weizenbocks aren't really turning out to be the best idea, after all. Stick to the Germans, they won't do you wrong.

22oz bottle from RDMII (thanks man). No bottling date but this was released quite recently. Served in a Terrapin snifter.

Pours a murky, opaque deep brown with slight gold highlights and almost two full fingers of manilla head. Despite the fact that there is almost no retention whatsoever, there are a few spots of lace here and there.

Citrus zest and bannana bread dominate the aroma. They make room for other notes of clove, an almost cinnamon character and very faint cocoa.

Now this is not your momma's weizenbock. A strange semi-bitter floral rose flavor almost dominates. Cloves, bitter orange peel, bannana bread, mild chocolate and vague brandied raisins. A bizarre mixture for sure with almost no alcohol detected. The floral and rindy bitterness is almost too much by the end of the bottle.

The feel is on the lighter side of medium with fairly mild carbonation. Floral, citrus rind, clove and bannana finish.

An interesting experiment and departure from the style that ultimately didn't do it for me. Thin and overly bitter without near enough sweetness to balance.

Bomber poured into a heffe glass.

Pours a nice, rich amber color. Aggressive pour yielded an inch of head which settled fairly quickly into about a half inch head. Kinda off white, not quite a khaki color. Decent lacing.

Smells like a chocolate covered orange. A little bit of banana. the banana is not as prevalent as in other weizenbocks I've had. Not my favorite smell. Kind of an odd mix from the orange and banana.

Tastes like a chocolate covered banana. And as a wise man once said: "There's always money in the banana stand." And the taste of this beer is money. Not as much orange in the taste as there is on the nose. The orange-banana flavor mixes well on my palette. At least better than on the nose. Good maltiness as well.

Mouthfeel is slightly carbonated. Malt provides a medium creaminess to the body.

Overall a good beer. Good take on a weizenbock.

Pours absolutely thick with sediment from a cellar-temperature bomber; indeed, "chunky floaters", as a previously reviewer described them, is pretty apt: it really gives the appearance that a tablespoon of orange zest found its way into the bottle. I know better, but the taste matches that notion: a buoyant bitter-orange florality is the primary flavoring component, backed by a silky chocolate backbone that's pretty entirely fused with the expected malt-fruitiness expected from a Weizenbock—fused to an extent that the Weizenbock characteristics are pretty overridden.

It's an interesting beer—not unpalatable, certainly—but it's a little too much along several axes, and a little not enough along others. The mouthfeel is somehow both a bit syrupy and a bit thin; the prominence of the chocolate exaggerates as the beer warms and sits with you; and while there is a "hint of banana from the yeast" on the nose, there's much more than a hint of the yeast in the beer itself. Still, Terrapin admits this Side Project (#22) "is clearly a hoax" of a rendition of the style, so some deviations are forgivable; nonetheless, it seems "the addition of cocoa nibs and orange peel for a greater depth of flavor" failed to actually provide much depth of flavor, beyond big orange and thick cacao notes, so it's hard to be especially enthused about this Moonray.
