12 oz. courtesy of the unofficial Terrapin ambassador to New England, everetends...
Pours a color that's split between a craft-root beer and perhaps a Dubbel...nice gingerbread hue with quite an ephemeral thin, yeasty ginger-colored head.
Wow - lots more malt than expected...intersting! Big caramel malt feel - slight (and I mean verrry slight) butter/diacetyl (?) hint. Alcohol is hidden but sweetness is huge. Hops are very quite - maybe a little pine but very faint.
OK, there's the hop bite. It is pretty understated but there's a bit of pine and some good floral character. Heavy caramel flavor to the bountiful malt with a little ginger spice. Warmth brings the hops out further but they're still more mellow than expected.
Palate has a velvety sweetness that's quite soothing; this meshes with more of a grassy hop feel than encountered in nose or taste to create a comforting finish. Malt is still captain of this ship.
I think I may have missed the hop boat on this one. It's very enjoyable but the bitterness is on deep background. Well, that's just a good excuse to get back on the horse and land some more of this stuff to try again, 'cause Terrapin stuff has treated me right so far...
