Poured from a 12oz turtle covered bottle into a nonic pint glass.
This beer looks red. It has a deep maroon color that, when held up to the light really shows its redness. An aggressive pour didn't get much head- about one finger or so, and it quickly exited, leaving a thin clingy layer on the top.
I'm surprised by the breadiness on the nose of this "big hoppy monster." There's a touch of citrus but ultimately I'm impressed by the complexity of the malt smell. The malts smell sweet, almost like molasses cookies and there's a nice bready undertone as well. I would like a hoppier nose, but I think this is consistent for the style.
This is a smooth drinking beer. The mouthfeel almost has a cask-like creaminess to it, with a limited carb bite and a nice syrupy body. The finish on the sip is surprisingly dry, with no hop oil residuals or hard-palate oil slick.
I have to say it, I just don't find this to be a particularly hoppy beer. I think Lagunitas' Imperial Red has a stronger hop profile and I just get a slight hint of tropical citrus hoppiness. The quaff, however, is dominated by malt, delicious malt. The sweetness of the nose carries through to the drink, giving it a sweetbread quality that is really rather pleasant. I even gather some candied sugar that certainly wouldn't be discernible in a hop bomb.
This beer is highly drinkable considering its ABV. I imagine the sweetness could be cloying after a time but otherwise it stands as a consummate example of an Imperial Red. I think this beer suffers from its name more than anything as I was expecting one thing and I got another. Still, this is a quality brew and I would certainly drink it again given the chance.
