12oz bottle poured into a Stone Imperial Russian Stout tulip.
Funny thing about this beer, I've been dying to try it forever, and have actually bought it three times before, but shortly after each time, I always would throw it in as an extra for a trade since a lot of people have it on their 'Wants'. Well I read a few threads about how great this beer is and that it goes Founders Breakfast Stout a run for its money, so I bought one today and am drinking it tonight before I lose another one.
A - This beer is very formidable looking. The beer itself pours an obsidian black, and it seems that there won't be much head on it, but it slowly rumbles to life and a few moments later a huge, 3-fingered head rises from the muck. This head is incredibly impressive, looking more like frothed milk by how creamy and smooth it looks, and is a DARK mocha color. Retention is great and leaves behind excellent lacing.
S - Smell is... different. A strong coffee aroma is the first noticeable characteristic, then dark bittersweet chocolate. However, I'm also getting some astringency that I would assume is from the alcohol. It's subtle, but definitely noticeable. Otherwise it's sweet smelling and my eyes open wider just smelling the coffee in this.
T - Thankfully, the astringency in the nose is much less distinct in the taste. The first notes in the taste are a delicious combination between an almost fudge-like chocolate with nice bitterness and the freshly roasted coffee. An abundance of malts help provide a sweet counter to this double-hit of bitterness while offering a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is some alcohol in the back-end of this beer, but its more warming than astringent. The finish is very long and filled with chocolate bitterness.
M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with low carbonation. Very smooth, easily backing up the Imperial Oatmeal moniker given by Terrapin itself. Leaves a nice coating on the palate while drinking.
D - Drinkability is high. Althought some alcohol is discernible, it's masked well for the most part under the intense creaminess, bold flavors, and palate-covering viscosity. An excellent beer and I will surely be keeping my eye out for more of these.

A - Pours a rich, dark brown color, like maple syrup. No carbonation and virtually no lacing.
S - Strong toffee with a slight hint of licorice. A little bit of caramel. Not getting much coffee here at all.
T - More toffee and caramel than coffee or oatmeal. A nice flavor overall, but ultimately pretty mild.
M - Despite almost no signs of carbonation in the pour, it foams up across the tongue, lending to a very creamy texture and helping to bring out the toffee and caramel flavors. Definitely getting the oats in the texture.
O - A good beer, but nothing phenomenal. I was a little disappointed to not be getting any of the coffee on the palate. I couldn't find a bottling date, so it's possible it was just old and had faded over time. I won't be going out of my way to get this again, but I may pick it up if I come across it. I'm interested in giving it another try in case the bottle I had was just old.

Poured from bottle into Hoppin Frog snifter. Date on bottle is 2012. Date of review is 3/12/14.
Appearance- Pitch black with absolutely no light coming thru when held up to a bright light. Really beautiful dark tan half finger head sits on top of this beer.
Smell- Roasted malts and smoke jump right up into my nose holes. Sweet chocolate and slow-roasted beef come through too. Very little coffee, probably because of the 2 year aging.
Taste- Coffee with cream and sugar right away. It's just like drinking a delicious iced coffee from my local hipster coffee shop. I also detect sweet and sour cherries. Of course, there is still the roast and smoke too.
Mouthfeel- Just a bit thinner than I had expected. I get that chalky but pleasant film that has me believing I am drinking coffee.
Overall- The coffee has faded but still a very enjoyable beer. Not much else to say, does what it's supposed to do.
