12oz bottle from Dopplelbockulus – Thanks Charley!
Notes taken 11-30-13 with my Sierra Nevada Balloon Glass

First time with this one…

A: Dark chocolate brown, not quite black even once collected in the glass. Looks dense and murky with not much head production. Very still with only a mere wisp of dark khaki that slides out to a collar with ease. Some oily legs paint the glass ever so slightly leaving behind only a few dots. A more aggressive pour yielded some better results here.

S: Dense with dark coffee roast and a touch of molasses. I get further into some toasted oats and other sweetened black grains with hints of brewers licorice as well. Really nice with some mild alcohol presence.

T: Black coffee roast with a higher than expected level of hoppy bitters. Nothing acrid but has a nice peppery hit. Blackened malts with toasted oat cereal, molasses, bakers chocolate, and cherry tobacco. Fairly robust and a touch sticky sweet with some alcohol intensity. Finishes up with some earthy minerals. Very nice coffee infused roast character here.

M: Semi thick body and definitely leaning on the heavier side but with a smooth and creamy consistency that gives a much lighter impression. Fairly bitter with some mild alcohol heat and sticky slickness on the finish.

D: Probably my favorite Terrapin brew thus far. Everything else I have tried from there has been a bit of a letdown for me. This is nice rich and roasty with good java character. Would accept as an extra anytime.

12 oz. bottle obtained on trade (thanks, GmRFx!), 2012 vintage, poured into my The Bruery "Rue the Day - June 15th 2013" snifter glass, drank 12/4/13 over an hour

A: 3/3 - pitch black with reddish hues on the edges, no clarity, poured with a tight frothy white head that settled into a subtle glass lacing with minimal residuals. mild carbonation, moderate alcohol legs

S: 11/112 - big coffee/espresso, oatmeal, tobacco and leather notes with some alcohol --> fantastic aroma!

T: 18/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's moderate bitterness supplied by the coffee and roasted malts; in the middle of the mouth, it's mostly creamy malt complexity with some residual alcohol; moderate sweet aftertaste but not cloying, invites sip after sip

M: 4/5 - incredibly creamy mouthfeel, big body from the oatmeal, especially impressive in the context of moderate carbonation

O: 9/10 - wow, really great imperial stout! I love the coffee and espresso qualities with some residual sweetness; definitely up there with Founders Breakfast Stout --> recommended if you can hunt some down (again, thanks so much, GmRFx!...I owe you for this one)

TOTAL = 45/50

Wake n Bake!

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours pitch black with a thick, fluffy, tan head. Smell is very roasty, coffee, chocolate, toffee, and caramel notes. Taste follows, very roasted in character with tons of coffee. Definitely some bitter chocolate notes as well, along with a deep, rich, caramel flavor. I also get a bit of smoke y flavor as well. Low carbonation, however smooth, thick, and creamy mouthfeel. Overall this is my favorite imperial stout right now. Definitely worth picking up if you can.
