Review adapted from notes taken 2/5/2011.

Appearance: Head is the color of espresso with a touch of cream. Pours a surprisingly dark black with some dark browns and reds shining through in direct light. A nice smooth pour with some obvious body. Minimal visible carbonation.

Smell: Hello coffee. Roasted coffee beans, fresh brewed coffee, and the distinct aroma of coffee with a bit too much cream and sugar. It's all there. Some backing dark cocoa notes help at a mild bitter edge to the experience. Some roasted malts push toward burnt at times. No hopping to speak of, just more coffee. Rich and chocolatey with a minor smokiness on the back.

Taste: Iced coffee with a cocoa swirl thrown in for good measure. A little tough compared to the nose with a biting roasted, slightly burnt and smoky malt profile. Some dark chocolate and cocoa bitterness as well. Nice grainy backing profile that I think I can attribute to the oats. Some minor hopping with no real pronounced profile is barely there. Nice sweetness coupled with everything helps smooth it out a bit. So much coffee it's nuts.

Mouthfeel: A nice full, but not syrupy, body. Creamy and smooth. A little dry on the back. Drinks like coffee with cream without the associated flavor.

Overall: Coffee beer, with an emphasis on coffee first.

A huge amount of coffee ended up covering some of the other great flavors. If I could dial it back and let the malt profile shine a little bit more, this could easily compete with Founders Breakfast Stout, and that's lofty company.

Dark brown, almost black, appearance. Nitogen-like falling head, that is quite generous and very slowly dissipates into a two-finger thick cloud, which also slowly dissipates and leaves some rings around the glass. Aroma is suprisingly faint, but a clear whiff of burnt coffee. Mouthfeel is comfortable, like drinking cold coffee. Tastes like iced coffee, with a very peppery flavor. Aftertase is not overwhelming (which I like), leaves a morning coffee sensation that is pleasant. This is a really tasty but not overwhelming beer. Well done.

Served in a snifter.

A - A deep brown hue with a thin chocolate head. Lacing and retention were average.

S - Big fresh coffee is exploding out of this one; like an iced espresso. Little vanilla and dark malts behind. For those coffee lovers (like me!) this is excellent.

T - Starts with rich deep coffee and recedes to slight bitterness and roasted goodness. Bit of chocolate sweetness behind all the mounds of coffee.

M - Fairly creamy with a medium-plus body.

O - This is the most robust coffee presence I have ever experienced in a stout. I love coffee and this is well rounded without ruining the "beer" aspect! For those who are not enthused for a fresh cup of joe, look elsewhere.

2011 bottling courtesy of Will (huge thanks for this tick). 12oz longneck poured into a Hair of the Dog snifter...

A: Opaque, viscous dark pour...dark mocha-colored head and some great lacing for a big stout.

S: Aromatics unfold with big time coffee and espresso house notes, as well as chocolate (dark chocolate maybe?) drizzle...hints of sweetness with lots of big roasty character.

T: Lots of espresso and freshly roasted coffee flavors...chocolate and flaky oats...moderate sweetness to balance the roast...hints of dark caramel as well but its a bit ambiguous..

MF: Medium-to-full mouthfeel with a sticky, viscous sensation...moderate roasted/bitter finish with just a touch of alcohol warming.

O: Good! Enjoyable coffee-chocolate-oatmeal stout. Not quite as good as FBS IMO but I'd still like to try it fresh.
