2011 vintage poured into a nonic pint...

A. Pitch black with serious legs, an almost oil like consistency of residue left on the sides of the glass. A thin, quarter finger dark brown head erupts ever so briefly and quickly disappears.

S. Whole coffee beans, dark chocolate shavings, warm brownies, lightly toasted nutty character, and some faint heavy cream. One of the most assertive coffee noses I have found, but what's really impressive is the massive dose of dark chocolate that backs it up. Really nice.

T. Follows the nose. Rich, dark chocolate and mocha, freshly roasted coffee bean, and a smooth, milky creaminess to round things out. Coffee and chocolate are so well-balanced yet so well-integrated here. Neither steals the show yet both are so readily apparent and so well-done. The oatmeal stout qualities kick in on the back-end, which resolves into this smooth, creamy, whipped cream quality that immediately reminds me of tiramisu. Standing ovation.

M. Despite the relatively disappointing head, this brew is still well-carbed for the style. The hats have to come off to the balance here, though, between chocolate and coffee. The brewers just did such a good job of making a robust stout with a flavor profile that, while not overly complex, is ultimately highly satisfying. Coffee fades to chocolate fades to whipped cream fades back to coffee. Excellent.

O. I'm having a hard time believing it myself, but this is the best Coffee Stout I have ever had the luxury of trying, surpassing the amazing Founders Breakfast Stout by just a hair. What this beer has that that does not is just more assertiveness in the core flavors of coffee and chocolate. The achievement here, though, is how enjoyable and drinkable this is at this ABV and with this much flavor. It's so very well-rounded. Worth every bit of the love that it gets on this site.

A: Pours a basic black with a fine 1/4-inch mocha head which fades to a thin cap and around the rim. Swirls leave a curtain of oily lace.

N: Creamy chocolate cocoa, espresso pressed coffee, vanilla and roast.

T: Chocolate covered espresso beans (without the crunch), creamy whipped mocha, roasty with a faint char. Vanilla increases with warmth. Semi-sweet marshmellow.

M: Rich and creamy and full and smooth. Initially sweet, then slightly bitter and dry on the finish.

O: Wonderful coffee stout.

12oz bottle from Sherlock's (Marietta, GA). 9.49/ 4pk. 2011 release. Served in a snifter.

Pours midnight black with a beautiful 1.5 finger mocha head that dissipates slowly. Light reveals chestnut around the edges. Nice clumps of lacing left behind.

Nose is sweat creamed coffee, chocolate, caramel and roast. The coffee smell is incredibly inviting!

Huge delicious coffee hits the palate first, but more burnt/ roasted than the nose hinted. Bittersweet dark chololate, rinds, caramel, pepper and smoke all detectable to varying degrees behind that phenominal coffee blend. A faintly detectable booze bite fades in and out between the other flavors. Wonderful!

Medium-thick, creamy, velvety feel. Carbonation is moderate enough to generate a layer of fine capuccino bubbles when I swirl my snifter. Long bitter coffee aftertaste.

Outstanding! This is the beer responsible for getting me in to craft beer. It's excellent to revisit it after trying so many other truely great brews to see that it still holds it's own with aplomb. I'm one of the few that prefer WnB to Founders Breakfast Stout, favoring the unyielding great coffee flavors. Many other beers have strong coffee but for me this particular blend exceeds them all. Still one of my all-time favorites and a must-try for any fan of coffee stouts.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter
2011 Vintage

A: Pours a slightly viscous opaque jet black with just under 1 fingers width of a pretty, real dark mocha colored head, which unfortunately dissipates down quickly to only a very thin film and outer ring.  Leaves a fair amount of patchy lacing and a booze trail.

S: Black coffee, roasted malts, a hint of bakers chocolate.  Not a lot of complexity on the nose, but quite pleasant if you are a coffee lover like myself.

T: Sweeter than the nose implies.  Dark chocolate, iced black coffee, roasted malts and some hop bitterness on the backend. A touch of dark fruits, and a noticeable alcohol. Black coffee hangs around as a lingering aftertaste after each sip.

M/D: Relatively smooth, medium bodied but thinner than many in the style.  Carbonation is also too high for the style, which detracts from the fullness and smoothness.  ABV is kept in check, and drinkability is high.

O: Overall, a solid offering.  Definitely better than middle of the road, but a number of shortcomings when compared to the best in the style (lack of complexity, strength of aroma and flavor, thinnish feel).  Certainly worthy of a drink, but don't expect KBS.
