A - Pours a near black with a small caramel colored head that quickly dissipates leaving only thin outer ring around the edge of the glass. Ok lacing

S - Roasty coffee grounds, sweet chocolate/oatmeal notes, sweet caramel malts.

T - All the aromas come through in the taste. Sweet oatmeal and chocolate flavors transition into a nice bitter roasty coffee flavor, perfect balance.

M - Medium bodied, not too heavy, mildly carbonated. Could drink a 4 pack of these for breakfast everyday.

O - Probably my favorite coffee stout, sweet and roasty well balanced and super tasty. love it

Bottle brought to you by Doodler. Thanks for this one. Been interested in trying some stuff from this brewery for a long time.

From a bottle into a snifter.
Vintage: 2010

APPEARANCE: A thicker black pour yields a small, medium-looking, mocha colored head with good retention. Black, opaque body with higher levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a thick ring and full, swirly wisp with carbonation decorating the top. A ring and splotchy wisp remain leaving some nice dots of lacing down the glass. Good looking for sure.

SMELL: Big nose off the pour. Lots of roasted coffee beans, caramel malts, roasted aromas and some nice dark baker’s chocolate. Oats are in there as well. Chocolaty and coffee goodness with a caramel touch. Aromatic and inviting.

TASTE: Just like the nose. Lots of wonderful flavor in this one. Roasted and burnt coffee begins the show with some caramel sweetness and oats up front. A nice dose of bitter, dark chocolate comes through after the swallow with roasted coffee and notes of sweet vanilla cream. Bold and persistent aftertaste of bitter coffee, dark chocolate, sweet cream and a nice caramel touch, all on top of a solid roasted base. This is really flavorful and complex. Phenomenally blended and potent taste profile. Delicious.

PALATE: Medium-full body and medium carbonation. Very creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes somewhat sticky. Oats have done their job here, making this very creamy and silky.

OVERALL: This was just stellar! Bold and complex flavor profile with a superior balance all the way around, and a big, creamy palate to support it all. The nose was fantastic as well. One of the best, if not the best, coffee stouts on the market. I can imagine the coffee may have been a little much when fresh, but with a year on it, everything works just so well together. This really is as good as it gets. Great stuff Terrapin, and thanks for brewing it in reasonable quantities. Cheers Doodler! Highly recommended.

12 oz bottle. vintage 2011.

A: pitch black body. head that is dark brown and fluffy. i wish the head stuck around a little longer. however does leave some sticky lacing.

S: straight up rich roasted coffee. chocolate too. chocolate coffee brownie bars. the grain mixed with the coffee makes for a truly unique aroma.

T: starts like drinking a nice cup of italian roast coffee. oats ladled in there makes this think silky smooth and adds another dimension to the roast. chocolate. dark, dark chocolate.

M: the fizz is tingly, but certainly moderate. wouldnt hate for a bit more silk on the mouth. full bodied.

D: this thing almost tastes like a cookie. really tasty coffee stout. big and flavorful with a great nose. wouldnt hate a little less fizz.

Bottled in December 2011, and opened for a head-to-head comparison with Founders Breakfast Stout.

Pitch black pour with a heavy consistency, but was clearly less viscous than the FBS' syrupy drizzle from the bottle. Head is darker and less abundant, as were retention and lace. Still looks good, though.

Aroma reminds me of a "blonde" roast with plenty of caramel & bittersweet chocolate alongside. By contrast, the Founders brew smelled like ordering a coffee "black" with only a touch of malty sweetness lurking closely behind. Advantage: FBS.

Everything from the nose comes together in the taste, but it's somehow both sweeter and darker than Breakfast Stout. Feels like the Terrapin's coffee roast is of a darker, more bold variety than the Founders', yet WnB's flavor profile is noticeably more sugary. The blacks are a deeper black, and the highs are higher, but dynamic range is more desirable in the A/V field than in beer. Again, I prefer Breakfast Stout.

I'm a huge fan of adding oatmeal to stouts, porters, and brown ales. WnB is a full-bodied brew and shows a stickiness not found in its rival. However, it still falls short in comparison to the luscious creaminess that Breakfast Stout delivers.

Overall, Wake-n-Bake is a good beer that's deserving of your beer money. I enjoyed it more before pitting it against Founders' remarkable Breakfast Stout, and its score certainly would be higher if the two were not reviewed side-by-side. That said, I cannot see myself ever choosing WnB over Breakfast Stout when given the choice. Both are quite good, but FBS is simply on another level of craftsmanship (brewmanship?) when push comes to shove. Cheers!

A - Nearly black with a medium-sized very dark brown head. It lingers indefinitely as a fine brown film on the surface. Lacing ribbons of lacing adorn the sides.

S - Coffee and dark chocolate ganache with a faint, clean peppery hop aroma crispness to it. There is a hint of that pleasant sweet old milky coffee aroma one might find in a few hours old empty mocha container.

T - Initially it is sweet and chocolaty, but this is quickly joined by the coffee - a nice rich, roasted coffee bean flavor. It reminds me a bit of chocolate covered espresso beans (sans grittiness). The aftertaste is a mild coffee bitterness with the slightest hint of that chemical coffee aftertaste most present in bad coffee.

M - Smooth, medium to thick, a little gummy in the throat, but otherwise refreshing.

D - As someone who abstains from coffee, this is a bit much. Not the outstanding flavor of course, but the caffeine. I like the taste, but it's too highly caffeinated for a dainty green tea drinker like myself. I could never drink more than one of these in a sitting. I have to drink it in the morning to fall asleep that night. So, all and all, a beer I like, but will probably avoid.

Very excited to taste and post a review of one of the best know coffee stouts in America. Many thanks to bullet bill for this rare opportunity

A- a massive black hole of java Joe engulfs my glass with an espresso creamy head of foam lingering and adding to the look. An immediate parallel connects to an iced mocha coffee. Nice.

S- an apocalypse of black coffee beans ripping through with some slight cream/sugar participating in this coffee experience. Heavy duty black coffee theme with some brown sugar and toasty malt. As simple as this... Most black coffee scent I have ever come across

T- ridiculously analogous to an iced coffee with all the flavor you would want. Sweet mocha flavor mingles with the coffee beans to put forth a wicked coffee stout. The best coffee stout I have ever had

M- creamy and coating with flavor. Nor to mention the carbonation keeps the integrity of the stout intact! Amazing!!!

O- best ever. There are a ton of great brews on the market that exhibit the properties of a cup of coffee. Terrapin went out and slayed the precedent with their own offering. Other breweries take warning.... This is where the bar is set when it comes to a great coffee beer
