I get the coffee grounds coming off the nose, it smells like freshly roasted beans. Speaking of roast, lots of roast on this one. I get a little chocolate and a bit of dark fruit on this one too.

The beer looks like a stout alright! Dark tan java head that falls back into the beer rather quickly. No penetration of light whatsoever.

There is little chocolate in the flavor of Wake & Bake, but rather that of cacao beans. Pure cocoa before it becomes chocolate. The coffee stands on the forefront and leads you through the long finish. After the finish, a bit more chocolate comes out and rounds out the experience nicely.

Full bodied, medium-low carbonation, and only a tad boozy. Another Terrapin winner!

2011 vintage

A: Black with a creamy brown head. Decent lacing.

S: Sweet roasted malt. Coffee. Chocolate. Very coffee forward. Smells like a good cup of coffee with a lot of cream and sugar in it.

T: Sweet roasted malt with chocolate and a bit of vanilla and cream. Still coffee present, but I think it died down some, which for me, is a good thing.

M: Full body. Smooth and softer carbonation. Very nice.

O: Pretty good drinkability. Probably more so even since the coffee has died down some I believe. A very well made beer. Glad I got to try this.

Thanks are due to EgadBananas for providing this bottle. Poured into a pint glass. Pours black with a thin, dark tan head. The beer is completely opaque. The head dissipates quickly, leaving a wispy cap atop the beer. Coffee is very forward in the nose. There are also well pronounced aromas of dark roasted barley malt, chocolate, and oats. There's a mild sweetness in the smell and the ABV is well-hidden by all the aromas. The taste follows the nose. The coffee flavor is very forward in the taste. The coffee notes marry well with the dark roasted barley malts, oats, dark chocolate, and molasses. For an 8.1% ABV beer, I can't taste the alcohol at all until it starts to warm up. The flavors are well balanced. The body is medium to full with moderate carbonation. The beer is smooth and creamy. The drinkability is very high. Overall, this is an excellent beer. This coffee stout works well as a breakfast drink or as an afternoon beer.

355 ML bottle
From Black Booty BIF

A-- Poured pretty much black. Just a few slivers of ruby but settled midnight black. Looks quite dense for the ABV. Nice one finger mocha colored head. Good head retention to this and settled to a a finger of head and film through drinking. Nice spotty lacing with this.

S-- Big jolt of coffee of the bat. Nice fresh roasted stuff. Good quality coffee. Underneath the coffee was oats with brown sugar and chocolate. Just spent a few minutes just on the nose. Really nice stuff.

T-- Feel the caffine rush right off the bat. Good dose of coffee. Big thing to me was the use of quality stuff and right amount of roasting. Rolled oats, sweet brown sugar, slightly bitter dark chocolate. Has a small dose of coffee acidity. Not a lot though.

M-- Light carbonation, medium body. Carbonation smooths out the beer quite well. Nice dry oatmeal finish. Lingering aftertaste. Like how it went oatmeal, chocolate and oatmeal finish. Good stuff.

O-- Nothing crazy but just a great, fun beer to drink. Can I get more please?? On par with FBS, if not better, as get a really nice coffee rush from it. Exceptional stuff

Received a 4 pack of this in a trade...poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice deep, rich dark brown almost black with a nice one finger deep mocha head that fades to leave nice side lacing and a thin blanket with nice halo.

S - Yep, this one is a glass of dark dark roast coffee and chocolate. Very impressive amounts of coffee in this one. Very slight vanilla and maybe even some light caramel.

T - Wow, a great follow through on the nose. Big, no, HUGE black coffee and bitter coffee grounds. This stuff is delicious. That strong coffee is backed up by deep, rich bakers dark chocolate. Its got so much coffee and chocolate. I guess what keeps it from a 5 for me would possibly be to have it slightly more rounded. This really tastes like chocolate covered espresso beans.

M - Mouthfeel is delicious. Not quite velvety smooth as I'd like in a stout as there maybe is a touch too much carbonation for me.

O - This is a delicious coffee stout and easily rivals Founders Breakfast stout for me. Absolutely delicious. Would trade for this again in a heart beat.

2011 vintage poured into a nonic pint...

A. Pitch black with serious legs, an almost oil like consistency of residue left on the sides of the glass. A thin, quarter finger dark brown head erupts ever so briefly and quickly disappears.

S. Whole coffee beans, dark chocolate shavings, warm brownies, lightly toasted nutty character, and some faint heavy cream. One of the most assertive coffee noses I have found, but what's really impressive is the massive dose of dark chocolate that backs it up. Really nice.

T. Follows the nose. Rich, dark chocolate and mocha, freshly roasted coffee bean, and a smooth, milky creaminess to round things out. Coffee and chocolate are so well-balanced yet so well-integrated here. Neither steals the show yet both are so readily apparent and so well-done. The oatmeal stout qualities kick in on the back-end, which resolves into this smooth, creamy, whipped cream quality that immediately reminds me of tiramisu. Standing ovation.

M. Despite the relatively disappointing head, this brew is still well-carbed for the style. The hats have to come off to the balance here, though, between chocolate and coffee. The brewers just did such a good job of making a robust stout with a flavor profile that, while not overly complex, is ultimately highly satisfying. Coffee fades to chocolate fades to whipped cream fades back to coffee. Excellent.

O. I'm having a hard time believing it myself, but this is the best Coffee Stout I have ever had the luxury of trying, surpassing the amazing Founders Breakfast Stout by just a hair. What this beer has that that does not is just more assertiveness in the core flavors of coffee and chocolate. The achievement here, though, is how enjoyable and drinkable this is at this ABV and with this much flavor. It's so very well-rounded. Worth every bit of the love that it gets on this site.

A: Pours a basic black with a fine 1/4-inch mocha head which fades to a thin cap and around the rim. Swirls leave a curtain of oily lace.

N: Creamy chocolate cocoa, espresso pressed coffee, vanilla and roast.

T: Chocolate covered espresso beans (without the crunch), creamy whipped mocha, roasty with a faint char. Vanilla increases with warmth. Semi-sweet marshmellow.

M: Rich and creamy and full and smooth. Initially sweet, then slightly bitter and dry on the finish.

O: Wonderful coffee stout.
