2011 Poured into Duvel glass

A: One-finger dark mocha head that retains around the edges really well, jet black color, good carbonation

S: Nice blend of coffee and malts, chocolate, oats, bit of vanilla

T: Dark chocolate, coffee, sweetness, bit of booziness, roasted malts, and oats

M: Smooth and creamy, could use a touch more carbonation, medium-full to full bodied, lingering aftertaste

O: Good coffee Imperial Stout, I'm excited to try a couple more as it ages a bit

Poured into a snifter while waiting for the steaks to grill, noon-ish.

A: Black with tan highlights. A half finger head that leaves big bubbles in its wake. A tan ring around the glass. Good lacing.

S: Wake up and smell the coffee! Coffee grounds dominate.

T: A pleasant Jittery Joe's Coffee sensation followed by oatmeal and vanilla undertones. Toffee and malts drive up and take a break.

M: medium and creamy. Full bodied.

O: A great brunch drink. The turtles over in Athens, GA know how to cook their beer-fast. A top notch imperial stout that certainly sticks its neck out to please.

A black-bodied beer with a frothy, mocha colored head that settles down fairly quickly. Lacing is minimal. Nose is a nice mix of coffee and cream, roasted malt notes, sweet brown sugar, caramel, vanilla.

Lots of fresh coffee, dark maltiness, cream, oatmeal, vanilla in the taste. Really delicious, one of the best coffee beers and one of the best oatmeal beers I’ve tried. Hop presence is quite low, nearly imperceptible, all bitterness comes from the dark roast coffee. Pleasant sweetness well-integrated with the other flavors, but not overly sugary. The booze is well hidden and only emerges ever so slightly in the finish.

Lovely mouthfeel; full-bodied, chewy and creamy, super smooth with a touch of stickiness. Not a super-huge imperial, kind of falls in between the bigger examples of the style and a regular oatmeal stout, making it one of the more drinkable versions of the style.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter at room temperature.

L - Jet black color with a 2 finger brown bubbly head that rapidly dissipated. Not much lacing at all.

S - Lots of coffee and roasted malt aromas. Definitely some chocolate sweetness and a hint of vanilla. Almost smells like a cake. Wake n bake, indeed. A tiny bit of alcohol shines through.

T - A rich sweetness, almost dark-berry like, with chocolate and vanilla flavors as well. A full wave of coffee, espresso, and roasted malt bitterness show up in the end. Very tasty. Sweet, but not in the artificial sugary kind of way.

F - Full-bodied, tongue-tickling sweetness, slightly bitter finish that builds and lingers very nicely. Mouth-coating feel and a wonderful throat-warming effect from the booze that warms without having any of the astringent taste.

O - I was highly impressed by this offering from Terrapin. I had heard good things, but I honestly wasn't expecting this much. Looks nice, smells good, tastes great, and has a great full body. What more can you ask for? For me, this is on the sweeter end of some of the "coffee" stouts I've had, but it is simply a different quality, not a bad one. The sweetness does not overpower the beer, does not taste artificial, and does not overshadow the coffee bitterness. This beer can certainly hold its own with some of the more famous imperial stouts out there.

Sample: 1 bottle 2011

A: Dark espresso, almost black, light medium brown lacing, almost no internal carbonation

S: Very fragrant, extreme coffee grounds, very mild cocoa, some sweetness but very heavy espresso notes

T: Tastes how it smells, truly feels like drinking a black iced coffee, a little alcohol on the finish, but so heavy on the espresso it's difficulty to report on anything else

M: Quite smooth despite its heavy taste and nose, again, if I woke up to find this in a mug and I drank it I can't say I wouldn't believe it to be coffee, definitely a bit lingering on the palate, strong espresso aftertaste

O: A coffee lover's dream, a but too heavy on the single flavor in my opinion, but for how it's advertised it certainly delivers

12 oz. bottle poured into a standard pint glass. 2011 vintage.

A - Pours a nearly black color with a bubbly light brown two finger head that dies to a halo. Not much lacing.

S - The coffee dominates the nose. Little else gets through aside from some toasted malt and vanilla beans. Smells like a cup of coffee.

T - The flavor is impressive. There is an obvious abundance of coffee, but there are also layers of complexity. Starts with some semisweet chocolate/coffee and a mild darkfruit tartness. A brilliant roasted character in the middle. Continues to a finish with big oat, coffee, and vanilla smoothness. It leaves vanilla and coffee on the breath. Very enjoyable flavor. I can't get over how much I enjoy the finish/aftertaste.

M - Nice medium feel with good carbonation and a moist finish.

O - The strong-point of this beer definitely comes from the complexity of the flavor. The finish is a smooth and delicious vanilla-coffee experience. I stocked up on this beer before it disappeared for the season, but I am almost out. I can't wait for next year's batch and I may age a few to compare.

A- Deep black pour with a half inch of fairly dakr brown head. Head doesn't last and lacing is minimal.
S- Definitely coffe and some oatmeal, touch of vanilla.
T- Strong coffee flavor, very sweet, bit of chocolate. I was told that there was some spice to this beer but I did not detect any. Very nice.
M- Medium to full body, coating, and very smooth.
O- I thoroughly enjoyed this beer and am disappointed I'll have to wait a year for more. Highly recommended!

12oz bottle from the 2011 vintage poured into a brandy snifter. Sampled side by side against Oct. 2011 FBS poured into a DFH signature glass.

A: Pours a deep, dark black color. Definitely a fairly thick viscous beer. I initially got about a half finger of dark mocha head on this one (darker than the FBS head). The head does fade to a ring quickly though. Nice dark lacing sheets on the swirl.

S: The nose on this beer is killer for a coffee lover (even more so than the FBS). I get bombarded with dark roast, espresso like coffee hints. Then you pull some milk and dark chocolate hints behind that as well.

T: On the front of the tongue you get that dark roast coffee bitterness. It's definitely not as hoppy as the FBS is. Towards the middle of the mouth that coffee is met with the chocolate hints that you were smelling: dark, semi-sweet type. The oats really help to smooth this brew out. It's silky almost, which I love. I can't taste the alcohol at all. On the finish, you are left with some lingering coffee flavors. But people who like that will be craving for their next sip.

M: Full bodied mouth coating from the oats.

O: I have to give this one an A for sure. I LOVE FBS, but on this occasion I don't know if it was the age of the bottles or a screwy palate but I liked the WnB more. Coffee was definitely more pronounced.

You want thick? well look no further. This beer is motor oil with a hint of coffee. Dont get me wrong it's a good stout but it's VERY thick and dark.

The taste is good, pours pretty much no head and is almost like a dessert beer. Interesting beer but when do you drink it? for me on an evening its one and done! any more then one of these in a night and you will end up bloated and full. Its that heavy.

Bottom Line: pretty good, if you see it grab it cause its kinda hard to get. But in the end I feel this is overrated.

A - Pours black and syrupy thick. Some lacing is there, and a thin amount of brown foam.

S - Impressive smell of oatmeal and coffee. Just as advertised. Very rich and a bit of cocoa scent.

T - oatmeal comes right through and makes this a real treat. A subtle flavor of breakfast blend coffee, toffee, and milk chocolate. Just about perfect for dessert.

M - A sipping beer; thick, heavy, and the flavors linger.

O - Nice big stout that is worth the hype. Glad to find a 4pk of this.

A- Roasted coffee is the predominant note. Slight dark chocolate as well. There's also a hint of black malt there, that comes out somewhat as the beer warms.

A- Near opaque. Poured with a minimal dark beige thin head.

F- Coffee is upfront and center. It tastes like what a premium coffee blend should. Rich and slightly roasty. I don't perceive much bitterness, but there is definitely some there. No real sweetness perceptible. No hot alcohol or appreciable warming effect on the throat.

M- Thick, full body, probably helped along by the oats. Minimal carbonation, which seems to work for this style. This is a beer calling out for Nitro to me.

O- Awesome rich coffee flavors and aromas. Not harsh or astringent at all. Drinkable and interesting. A sipper, but something you could have more than one of. Not a go-to style for me, but something that's worth experiencing.

Thanks to bryanole27 for this brew.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter

Pours a very dark brown to black with 2 finger head. The aroma is thoroughly dominated by coffee with hints of roasted malt and a bit of vanilla. Huge flavor; strong coffee up front roasted malt, slight hint of dark fruit and alcohol. Perfect balance between sweet and bitter. The carbonation is perfect and blends with the velvet smooth creamy full body. Overall a fantastic brew.
