A-Inch-tall mid to dark mocha head on a dark brown/black bodied beer. Above average head retention and some lacing.

S- Deep rich chocolate with equal parts coffee. Loving the smell!

T- Follows the nose. Big time coffee flavor with chocolate mixed in. Drinks in the upper single digits of alcohol percentage...slight booziness. Yum.

M- Thick and chewy mouthfeel, lower end of carbonation.

D/O- Terrapin Wake-n-Bake is the the top of it's class as far as "breakfast" stouts are concerned. The opening whiff of chocolate and coffee let you know you're in for a pleasant drinking experience. Low drinkability due to the in-your-face flavor and thicker mouthfeel...one serving will do for most. Recommended for any stout fan, as long as you like coffee. Thanks johntangus!

Pours an extremely dark coffee brown color. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Thin tan head melts away to edges. Lacing is a very fine foam. Mouth feel is smooth, but medium to light bodied for a Stout. Taste is mostly nice smooth coffee and a touch of chocolate, some dark fruit in the finish. Finishes bitter and with some alcohol burn. I liked this, although I felt it lacked some complexity. Maybe aging would improve a bit. But still a very nice Stout.

Poured from a bottle into my Chimay Chalice

A: Jet black with very little head. What head there was was dark brown and faded quickly.

S: Tons of coffee and then more coffee on top of that. Great nose and one I can smell with my glass sitting a few feet away.

T: Huge coffee notes throughout. I get chocolate in the end which finishes it up really nicely. Maybe a little over the top on the sweetness but really enjoyable.

M: Great carbonation but a little thinner than I hoped for.

O: This is an awesome beer. I really enjoyed it. I don't know if I'd put it on equal terms with Founders Breakfast Stout but its as close as I've found yet. This is my first offering from these guys and I'm truly impressed. I'd highly recommend this beer.

Draft pour into a pint glass for $5.50. Still named 'Wake n Bake' when reviewed. Sampled 2/1/11.

A: Served with a small dark brown head, creamy in texture and mediocre retention. The body is black through and through. Minimal lacing.

S: Very impressive. Malt heavy with an enormous amount of roasted espresso, supported by some fudgy chocolate notes that remain distant due to the dominant strong, black coffee aroma.

T: As advertised by the nose and just as good. Espresso in full force, rich and robust. Big bitter, dark chocolate compliment the bitter, somewhat citrusy hop profile. Lightly astringent and acrid enough to keep the sweetness at a pleasantly low level. Gently warming alcohol presence.

M: Damn near perfect. The use of oats plays into the creamy texture as well as the modest amount of carbonation.

D: [DRINKABILITY] I'm not a huge fan of Terrapin but they did an exceptional job with this brew. I'd gladly revisit this one.

Thinnish tan head, opaque dark brown body.

Smells like cold coffee with cream and sugar.

Tastes like cold coffee with cream and sugar. Very breakfast-able.

Not much carb here, but slightly fluffier than coffee.

I was warned, and disregarded those warnings. This is a good coffee stout. Though it is maybe 80% coffee and 20% stout.

[Best served in a Snifter]

The pour was a thick pitch black with a thin (less than 1 finger) medium brown creamy head that reduced quickly to a small amount of residue that was left clinging to the glass thus producing some fair lacing.

The aroma was right of front with the odor of fresh ground roasted coffee, cereal malts and a doughy yeast with a note of dark chocolate and a touch of molasses.

The taste was extra malty and a tad bitter sweet with a nice chocolate note, and then a large dose of roasted coffee took over with a slight molasses sweetness and a mild alcohol finish. The flavor was left to linger for a really long time after the swallow with the taste of coffee being the most dominant.

Mouthfeel was a thick, chewy, and full in body with the texture being smooth and creamy yet just a bit oily and having a soft carbonation.

Overall a very impressive Oatmeal Stout with the coffee and oats melding so well it was almost breakfast in a bottle.

Pours thick and absolutely pitch black with a dark mocha head which dissipates to just a ring around the glass.

The nose has a huge black coffee aroma along with dark chocolate and maybe some anise/licorice.  This one is going to be bitter...

Again, lots of black coffee right up front.  This is followed bitter dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, and oatmeal.  Finishes moderately bitter with a touch of anise.

Medium-full body.  It has the silky creaminess you'd expect from an oatmeal stout.  Superb drinkability.

Overall, a very nice coffee stout!  Closest beer I've had to FBS, just a tad thinner.  Certainly worth seeking out.

2011 Vintage

A - Pours a thick, dark black with a tan head that dissipates to a thin ring with some swirling on the surface of the beer. Ok lacing.

S - Roasted coffee, cream, malts, faint traces of the oatmeal and some cocoa. The coffee smell is strong and rather pleasant.

T - Big, bold coffee flavors. A little sweet and a little earthy. Roasted malts, notes of oatmeal and cocoa. The coffee is definitely the most assertive flavor here.

M - Full bodied, surprisingly drinkable and creamy with almost no detectable alcohol heat. Ok carbonation.

O - Wake and Bake is a fantastic coffee stout. It's big, bold and assertive in flavor and a must-have for any coffee aficionado.

A: jet black with large brown head, good retention.

S: big coffee , rich, and deep smelling.

T: good coffee, bitterness, and rich/sweetness. Tastes quality, unlike a few coffee stouts.

M: medium carbonation, medium body, still smooth.

O: great coffee stout, probably 2nd or 3rd best coffee stout out there. $10 per 4-pack.

Poured to a snifter.
Pours a deep rich black with a thick dark tan head. Very nice lacing.
Very nice aroma. Dark roasted malt, coffee, and oatmeal are all upfront. There is also a nice little bit of sweetness in there.
Great rich coffee flavors, the oatmeal really gives this guy has a big full body. There is a little dark sweet fruit in there to.
As noted before very full body, the carbonation is on the higher side of medium.
This is a very nice stout, very well balanced with great flavors. I would love to try this with a cocoa nibs treatment!
