Sampled at Brick Store Pub with the Atlanta B.A.'s. this brewery is making an impact and this was my first. Very creamy and coffee and smooth easy drink, though not too complex. Brown, lots of head and cream and cookies. Mocha and coffee, a spiked latte. About as good in bottle form had 2.3 years later. Had 3 years later on tap at Coasters.

Terrapin Wake-n-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout.

2010 vintage.

Pours a super pitch black color with a 2 inch super dark brown head that fades to a small puffy cap. Nice rings and latticework of lacing line the glass on the drink down. Smells very rich with roasted coffee beans, toasted oats and dark malts, and some bittersweet baking chocolate. Taste is also very rich with a complex blend of sweetened coffee, toasted oats, and chocolate syrup. There is also a slight vanilla flavor I am getting as well. There is a low but still bubbly level of carbonation that is perfect for this beer. Very smooth and creamy in the mouth. Overall, this is an awesome stout and something I could see myself stocking up massive quantities of if it was distributed in my area. I am super glad I have one more of these in my cellar.

Pours a nice, thick black color with a light mocha head. Nice nose brings forward a bit of roast as well as a good deal of coffee, chocolate, espresso, and a hint of vanilla. The taste definitely brings a good deal of chocolate as well as nice notes of coffee, roast, vanilla, and molasses. Feel is creamy with a tad bit of booze. Quite tasty. Definitely a solid beer.

Melted chocolate mahogany with the slightest sliver of reddish gold along the bottom edge of the glass. This is one of the light rejectingest stouts that I've poured in quite some time. It's difficult to see how the coffee-with-cream colored cap could be any thicker than it already is. This is not the sort of beer to leave much lace (thanks to the 8.1% ABV and relative absence of hop resins)... and it doesn't. No matter, though. It absolutely nails the Big Stout look with both barrels.

There are no surprises in the nose, but then I've come to expect quality from Terrapin. Each sniff is hugely fudgy with a near equal amount of black coffee and molasses. I couldn't have identified the Columbus and Northern Brewer hops by name, but I can definitely appreciate their contribution. Columbus is an interesting choice for a stout. And a good one.

My first impression is that the mouthfeel is a shade too light for Wake-n-Bake to be called an Imperial Stout (brewery) or a Double Stout (this site). Perhaps, as is so often the case, it'll coalesce and creamify as the beer warms. The flavor needs no help in that regard since it's pretty well-integrated as is. Why did it take me so long to start my big stouts out at cellar temperature?

Bittersweet chocolate is the star of the show, along with healthy lashings of black coffee and blackstrap molasses. I'm impressed by the 'dark blackness' of the flavor. That quality is easily achieved, I suppose, when one roasts the beejeezus out of barley malt and coffee beans. There's just enough char to make things interesting without descending into 'ashy charcoal' territory. A little smoke would have been interesting.

Despite the massive maltiness, the flavor profile has plenty of room to spare for citric hops. The impressive bitterness (noted especially on the finish) is coming from either the massively roasted malt or a stealth amount of Columbus hops. Probably a little of both given Terrapin's love of the little green cones. I'm not sure the beer changes much over time, but I do like the last few swallows better than I liked the first few. Why isn't this stuff in bombers?

As hoped for, the mouthfeel filled out with the few degress of warming from cellar temp to room temp. It's now medium-full, with a fluffy creaminess that can only come from the use of flaked oats. It still isn't Imperial/Double big, but it's such a pleasure to drink that style guidelines might as well be chucked out the window. Alcohol is barely noted on the palate. My central nervous system isn't so easily fooled.

Who wouldn't love a chef hat wearin', cookie bakin', stout drinkin' terrapin on the label of a coffee and oatmeal beer called Wake-n-Bake? Those wacky guys down at Terrapin Brewing know how to package beer. Even more importantly, they know how to brew great beer. I was expecting a lot from this one and am happy to report that it delivers the goods.

A: The beer is jet black in color and poured with a thin tan head that disappeared rather quickly.
S: There are light aromas of alcohol, coffee and chocolate in the nose. The smell becomes a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and also has flavors of roasted malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a light amount of carbonation. The finish is velvety smooth.
D: The beer is quite easy to drink because the alcohol is well hidden.

First off this is awesome..Pours a thick opaque black with a creamy head. No real thick lace, but this looks pretty good, but I had no idea what I was in store for. Smell was a french vanilla cappucino. No other really good way to describe it. Insane. Huge vanilla and coffee aromas. The taste was dare I say perfect for the style. I could not have asked for this to taste any better. Huge coffee and vanilla flavors again, with a hint of chocolate. Incredibly good and worth its reputation. This is a seriously good brew. I plan on stocking as much as possible and nver ever running out!!

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a big foamy dark brown head with good retention. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt with a sweet touch. Taste is well balance between coffee and roasted sweet caramel malt. Body is full and alcohol is not noticeable. Not the most complex of imperial stout but I could see this going very well as a session beer. I also appreciated the medium-level of alcohol and the well balance mix between coffee and sweet malt.

I guess the Wake 'n Bake may not be the most marketable strategy afterall. Now shown simply as Coffee oatmeal Imperial Stout.

The beer pours a medium viscocity of jet black liquids that settle comfortably into the glass. Carbonation releases a thin, solid brown head that settles even more under the weight of the alcohols to a dainty film. No lacing, but plenty legging. A typical RIS look, just wanted better foamstance.

Rich and rounded aromas, dominated by nutty coffees, show a ton of toffee, toasted and roasty malts, and a french toast sweetness/breadiness. Molassas, sorgum, nuttiness, and peanut brittle come to mind as well.

Flavors are very rich, careful not to let the aggression of the coffee to overpower the beer. Rich maltiness of deep, dark syrups, espresso, cocoa, and heavy cream all come together in a more rounded fashion than most coffee stouts. Outstanding flavors!

The oatmeal helps most in the texture; again not allowing the bitter oils of the coffee to push the beers into astringent levels. Instead the beer is as balanced in the mouthfeel as well as any other aspect of the beer. Rich, malty, full, lightly chewy, and mouth coating with heavy, roasted malts.

This beer might be one of the best balanced coffee dark beers out there. The oats help to bring the beer's characteristics together and helps with the creamy mouthfeel.

Thanks to PaulV for sending this one to me. Been a big want for quite some time!

A: The pour into a snifter is pure blackness with a thin dark brown head.

S: The nose is not very heavy on the coffee but a nice touch of vanilla and chocolate and some smooth, cookie-like oatmeal notes.

T: Now there is the coffee! A very strong coffee flavor with some touches of roast and a bitter finish. The vanilla and chocolate which I found very pleasing in the nose are disappointingly absent.

M: A medium to full bodied beer with a fairly lively, but low level of, carbonation.

D: Maybe it's because I just haven't eaten much today, but this one hits surprisingly hard for only 8%. However, it's a very tasty beer, but I would like a little more balance in the flavor.

Enjoyed this one at the Terrapin "Horizontal" Monster Tasting at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, Ga.

Appearanace: Bears a turbid black opaqueness topped by a dense tan-colored sudsy head. This beer just exudes a kind of delicious stickiness.

("I hate to see you doing this to yourself." - Liver)

Smell: Fresh French-press coffee all over the nose. In fact, the coffee aspect is a real nose hog here, as I smell little else (but with real coffee in the brew, what did you expect?). A few brief hints of dark chocolate (topped with coffee), Kahlua (with a coffee chaser), and roasted caramel (over coffee ice cream). Very alluring!

If you don't enjoy coffee, let's just stop right here. Otherwise, proceed!

Taste: Each mouthful is arabicrammed with rich coffee goodness. A great roasted malt profile kept in check by a luscious creaminess. At first, I thought there was a slight hop presence, but later I was of the opinion that there wasn't one - which is just fine with me. Let the hoppy beers have their hops, and let the coffee-loaded stouts have their coffee, I say.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, but was rather thick on the tongue, with a very smooth, oily texture and a long espresso-like finish. The alcohol is altogether warming and soothing. I'm really gonna need a good palate scrub after this one.

Drinkability: This stout is in no way a weakling, but its not overly heavy. Absolutely one-dimensional with its intense, well-defined coffee flavors, though it is upfront about it (and I can't fault it for it). Considerably drinkable for being a coffee-laced beer containing a decent amount of alcohol.

In short, this was a very enjoyable (coffee) stout.

Enjoyed while at the brewery in Athens, ga. Jet black with no light getting through. Thin almost non-existent head and no lacing. Aroma is pretty much like smelling a handful of ground coffee. Because of this I can't pick up much else. More coffee in the taste which is also dominating but I love coffee so that is fine fr my taste but may be overwhelming for others. Some milk chocolate notes throughout. Mediun to thick body and moderate carbonation. Fairly drinkable if u like coffee.

Pours a opaque black no light showing thru this bad boy with a thinner mocha colored head,wow the aromas damn where to begin heavy on the dark roast coffee,bitter chocolate a hint of almond extract as well just awesome.Flavors are heavy in the coffee department for some it maybe to much dark roast coffee and chocolate malt flavors with a malted milk type flavor,nice creamy,silky mouthfeel glides down pretty easily.If you like strong coffee and bitter chocolate you'll love this beer.

This has got be the best thing I've had from Terrapin to date. This beauty of a beer pours out nice and thick looking with a very dark black color and brown head. The lacing on the glass is pretty good and the beers thickness sticks to the glass leaving a nice brown tinge behind. The smell of the beer is deeply roasted coffee and chocolate, along with some burnt oats. The taste has some really nice coffee flavors and rich dark chocolate throughout. The mouthfeel of the beer is thick and oily, it's got a light carbonation to it also. Overall this is my favorite release from Terrapin, I enjoyed this beer a lot. It's a definite sipper so take your time with it and let it last a while.

Reviewed blind as part of Blind BIF #4. The pour results in a smooth, sleek obsidian topped by a bit more than a finger of light sienna foam. Lovely stuff, this. The nose comprises heavy roasted malts, coffee, smoke (sorta hammy, but not overly so), and a few drops of molasses. The taste runs very similarly, with the roasted malts taking the van again, followed by the coffee, some bitter dark chocolate, and some nice char smoke. I feel the darkness, people, and I am pleased, to say the least. The body is a solid medium, with a moderate carbonation and a kinda dry finish. Overall, a very nice stout. There was more smoke involved than I remember there being, but that, frankly, only helps this things even more in my eyes.
