12oz. bottle served into a snifter
Rye Squared pours out one finger or off-white, eggshell head on top of a deeply orange body. Its almost red, actually; that's how deep it is. The lacing is spotty but where it does lace it clings with tenacity.
Lots of spicy rye grain right up front on the nose. Pine is strong and is certainly the preeminent hop scent in this beer. There is some hoppy dankness to balance the rye but not nearly is the dankness to the degree that some smaller rye IPAs (like Founders Red's Rye) employ.
Lots of the promised pine come to the palate and the dank flavors are stronger here than the smell would have indicated. The rye malt balances the hoppy bitterness. There is also a small amount of orange that hits the bright notes at the top of the palate.
Rye Squared is medium-bodied for an IIPA that thankfully has carbonation to spare. The active effervescence helps to counteract the booze, though at 9.5% ABV the alcohol does show up in the mouth just a little bit. Yet the beer remains crisp so that ABV% doesn't impact the drinking of this beer too much.
This is a very nice IIPA which doesn't go overboard with the rye aspect. Maybe the beer would be better if it did, but what Terrapin has here is nothing if not super solid.
