Thanks UGADawgGuy for the opportunity.
Vintage 09 means brewed in Feb. this year.
Pours a clear medium amber with golden highlights. 2 fingers of frothy light tan head takes a respectable time falling. Leaves a good sheeting of foam.
Aroma is lightly sweet honey with a spicy, citrus overtone. A little bit of earthiness in the back. Very refreshing and somewhat deceiving as it doesn't reveal the sweetness to come...
Flavor starts a little less than sweet. A underhanded sort of tartness, which gives way to a deep, rich caramel smoothness only to re-emerge later with a strong bitterness. Earthy, a little spicy. Finish is a full and coating sweetness held back by a sturdy bitterness. A little alcoholic heat sneaks out at the end.
Solid, chewy, thick feel. Nice creamy carbonation.
This is a smooth drinking DIPA. I was almost done with the glass before I realized it. The rye and American hops really own the aroma but the flavor seems to go a different, more earthy, direction. And while I like sweet DIPAs but this rides the line of sweetness. Do I want one more? Definitely.
