Appearance: Very Light Cloudy Honey Colored with very little head upon pour. Even with aggressive pour only produced 1/2 finger head that fades way to fast. Wheat Beers need a good fat head that lasts til the end, lost points on this.

Smell: A Very Fruity Bubblegum Aroma with the wheat malt, banana, clove yeast smell a Hefe should have, Honey is also Present in the mix.

Taste: Malty, Fruity with a little Hops for Balance.

Mouthfeel: Very Light bodied, Goes down very nice. A very refreshing Summertime Brew.

Drinkability: A very Sessionable Brew, I could drink these all day or night long. Not the Best Hefe I ever had, but I'd still buy it again.

Reviewed from notes, had at Surf Taco in Jackson, NJ.

Appearance: Cloudy golden yellow, minimal white head due to the pour by the bartender, leaved decent lacing.

Smell: Spicy, nutty, lots of banana and clove.

Taste: Light banana and clove up front with good wheatiness. A good bit of fruitiness with it as well. Has a hint of honey.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and has a creamy smooth texture, with a slightly dry finish

Overall: I thought it was quite good. It went well with my taco and chips with salsa. Only problem with it is it has to compete with a very crowded field of hefeweizens, and the added honey doesn't distinguish it enough, though I would gladly buy it again.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a thin white head that dissipates quickly. No lacing present.

S: Smell of spice and banana accompany wheat malt. Packaging indicates tupelo honey should be present, but it is not detected in the nose.

T: Sweetness and spice dominate the beginning of the sip. Some pepper and star anise accompany additional spices and yeast flavors. The sweetness present doesn't have the flavor of honey, but it may be where it enters the equation. Some banana is present in the middle followed by some minor hop bitterness at the finish.

M: This is a light bodied beer with decent carbonation giving it a refreshing mouthfeel.

Overall, this is a good hefeweizen. The pour is not as yeast cloudy as expected, but the flavors are good. Fortunately, the flavors of the beer are more complex than those present in the nose.

A 12 oz. bottle in a Terrapin pint glass

A - A golden pilsner color, with a decent amount of head and nice lace retention

S - Wheaty lemongrass aroma, with some spicy notes

T - Honey, and lots of it. Nice wheat backbone

M - Well carbonated, and smooth.

O - An average wheat beer. The honey adds a nice twist. But probably a fun beer to drink on a hot summer afternoon on the lake.

Appearance - The appearance is golden and cloudy, standard for a wheat beer. 3/5

Smell - The smell is good. You get spice, clove, yeast and banana. All proper for the style. 4/5

Taste - The taste follows the smell to perfection. You get the spice, clove, yeast and banana as well as a slight sweetness towards the end of the drink. The aftertaste is all clove and banana. 3/5

Mouthfeel - The carbonation is very effervescent, almost to fizzy. 3/5

Overall - This beer is a good representation of the German Hefeweizen style yet it lacks complexity. It tastes like Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Lite, it has all the right ideas yet doesn't execute them to perfection. 3/5

12 oz bottle at 42 degrees into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.

A: It pours a hazy neon-yellow color with a half-finger of white head that leaves a little residual lacing.

S: Lemon, light grassiness, and some yeasty notes.

T: Tart and sour lemon, honey, light cracker maltiness, and a little pepper. This is more sour than I expected.

M: The body is medium-light with prickly carbonation and a crisp finish.

O: This is similar to Bell's Oarsmen; it is tart, refreshing, and tasty.

A - Pours with one finger of white foam on top of a somewhat hazy, deep golden body. The head settles down quickly and leaves moderate lace.

S - Yeasty aromas of clove and bubblegum with some tangy wheat.

T - Tart wheat up front with lots of banana and clove yeast character. Mineral notes come out in the middle with some herbal hops and more clove. The beer finishes with lots of wheat and clove that lingers on the palate.

M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - Not bad, this is one of the very few American brewed wheat beers that has a proper flavor profile. The yeast character is right on and there is plenty of wheat with a touch of tartness to keep it from becoming heavy. The only thing that is lacking is the mouthfeel which is a bit thin and lacks the creamy character that shows up in the best examples of the style. Well worth trying, you aren't going to do much better without going to Germany.

A: Hmmmm... pretty flimsy head for a hefe.... about 1/4 finger or so that quickly died down to nothing. The brew itself was a cloudy tangering-peach color.

S: Weizen-style funk for sure: coriander, banana, yeast, and candy sweetness.

T: Good, definitely no "wow" factor. It lacked a bit more fullness on the end. I couldn't taste the honey at all and the coriander was very subdued.

M: Personal preference: I like for my hefeweizen's to be as carbonated as hell. This one didn't have such a quality. No lingering elements whatsoever.

O: Good, but ultimately forgettable.

S: Soft clover honey, floral, lavender almost, some hefeweizen notes, ripe banana in particular.

L: Golden yellow, clear, white head that dissipates.

T: Ripe bananas give way to a soft bready malt with a touch of honey. Mild herbal bitterness leads to sweet honey finish.

M: Medium bodied, medium-low carbonation.

A really solid wheat beer, a tad sweet for a summer beer, but not bad.

Always looking out for new stuff from Terrapin, although I'm not sure a hefeweizen is really in their wheelhouse. They seem to be strongest on some of the more experimental styles (Gamma Ray, India Brown, Impy Pilsner) and the darker or hoppier stuff. Only one way to find out.

First instincts lookig strong. Color looks off, with more of an opaque cider hue than a golden translucent, and the head takes the road to nowhere in literally seconds. The nose is better, with honey smothered wheat and the expected yeast notes.

Taste is interesting, with the honey keeping the regulation banana clove in check to some degree. It's not a typical clone of the style but it's not anything else either. The finish is rather clean. Overall tasty but a little strange. Carbonation level is more typical. This isn't something I''ll look out for, but I'm glad I tried it.

12 oz bottle best by 1st week of september.

Pours hazy milky yellow with a huge billowing head. Aroma is potent banana and some bubblegum, smells like a hefe. First sip is.... a bit thinner than expected. Malt sweetness does not shine through, and it is very thin bodied. Some stale wheat malt pokes through as well.

Overall I have had much better hefes - but this one makes a valiant effort. Looks and smells great but doesn't back it up with the flavor.

12 oz bottle into my Rutgers pint.

The pour yields a two finger head that reduces fairly quickly to a ring with thin patches throughout the center. A darker yellow to gold color. A cloudiness at first pour has become a consistent haziness throughout.

A really nice aroma. Despite the 40-something degrees outside I feel a psychogenic warmth of summer. The usual suspects of a hefe in the nose: cloves and banana. I prefer banana to be bigger. The honey in the aroma has a flowery element that reminds me of honey suckles.

I'd have to say that the taste is a drop-off from the aroma. I expected more honey in the taste. There is a clovey bitterness that more sweet honey flavor might balance out. The wheat flavor is there with a bit of spiciness from the yeast.

The mouthfeel is light and pleasant as to be expected from a hefe. The suspended yeast and the trub add a smooth, almost velvety, quality.

Overall, this is a nice beer. Addition sweetness from the honey would make a big difference in my opinion. Tomorrow is opening day for the Phils, if I had off and it was closer to the 80s, Sunray would be a nice welcome to my glass.

Served from a freshly tapped keg about 1 hour from brewery.

For the most part, I don't care for the hefeweizen style, and this beer is no exception. To a good extent, I've tried to allow for that in this review, largely comparing this beer against other hefeweizens.

A: Typical for style: clear golden with a short-lived white head that leaves a dash of lace.

S: Rather floral and fruity (banana), but primarily wheat.

T: Again, typical for style, but with a bit more sweetness and fruitiness.

M: light body, as expected

O: not enjoyable, although I am sure I'd be happy to have another if I was very thirsty on a hot summer day.

The color was pretty hazy like most Hefeweizen brews. This could have been a little bit better aon most levels I thought. Strong flavors of banana in the brew. it's ok if thats what you like. The mouthfeel wasn't too bad had the smoothness of a beer this style should have.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a weizen glass.

Smallest. Hefeweizen. Head. Ever. This just looks depressing. A very very transparent straw color crowned with wisps of head. The smell is a bit nicer, bananas, citrus, coriander, and just a bit of clove. The taste is that of a nice, light hefeweizen. Banana, esters, citrus, coriander, you know the drill. Mirrors the nose. A bit weaker flavor-wise than most in the style, especially clove-wise, which I appreciate. Pretty good.

The mouthfeel is nice: light and crisp. The drinkability is quite good. All said, this is a pretty good hefe. Nothing amazing, but worth drinking for sure.

Poured from the bottle into my accompanying Terrapin Brewing Co. pint glass.

A--Poured a straw yellow with small, white head. Had some spotty lacing on the side of the glass as I went through the beer. Nothing too special.

S--Smells weakly of clove, banana, orange, lemon, and corriander. It has a watery smell to it and a little bit of "dankness" on the back end.

T--Unfortunately, it follows the nose. You get a bit of the sweetness of the orange peel, but the lasting impression of the beer is water.

M--The feel in the mouth is light and refreshing. The carbonation feels nice on the tongue, and the beer itself is nice and smooth. Perfect for this time of year in Miami.

O--Not the best offering from the guys at Terrapin (may be my least favorite--at least in the bottom two), but overall it is a perfect summer beer. The low ABV and light mouthfeel makes me think I could enjoy several of these on the weekend while I sit on South Beach. But this isn't something I would actively seek out.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Many thanks to betsona for this bottle!

A- Pours a hazy golden yellow color. One and a half finger white head shows poor retention. Spotty lacing left on the sides of the glass.

S- Lemon notes in the front of the nose. Fresh cut green grass with a nice settle wheat overtone to the middle. Light lemon zest and clove with grassy hops in the ending of the beer.

T- Wheat upfront on this with hints of bubblegum and banana in the front of the beer. Clove comes in next with some light spicing in the middle with hints of wheat. Orange zest toward the end with some light candied sugars. The wheat does come back into the ending with some light alcohol and grassy hops.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Clove, banana, wheat, and grassy hops left on the palate. Aftertaste is faded alcohol, grassy hops, light candied sugar, and hints of clove. Flavors were put together nicely but could have been a little more. No off flavors were present. Light medium alcohol drying on the palate.

D- This was a nice drinking summertime beer. The ABV is low which means many could be thrown back. An above average beer from a company that seems to be a hint or miss at times with me.

sunray wheat pours like a typical wheat beer a cloudy golden.the smell is about what you would expect. The taste however is above and beyond what I was expecting. There is a rich honey comb flavor and a fresh sweet citrus, there are also traces of maybe vanilla. I can't really put my finger on it but all I know is I like this beer. You can really taste the whole honey comb in there.

Purchased at The Beer Store in Southampton, PA as part of a mix & match 6pk.
Price broke down to $2.50 for the bottle.
Served and enjoyed in a DFH pint glass.

A - Pours a slightly cloudy, golden color. Large and very fizzy (almost like champagne) two finger head that quickly dissipates. After a couple minutes no head at all remains. No lacing at all on the side of the glass while drinking.

S - The smell is a mix of banana & clove. A slight sweetness is also noticeable.

T - A very light tasting beer. The main flavors are of banana, clove, and an earthy, grassy taste. A slight sweetness is also detectible from the honey that is advertised on the label as Tupelo Honey from the Savanna Bee Company.

M - Decently carbonated. Not heavy on the palette with little to no aftertase.

D - A very light beer. Not a high ABV which leads to almost no alcohol taste at all. A beer that would be perfect and refreshing on a hot summer day. Not my favorite style but tasty nonetheless.

Overall - A decent wheat beer. I think those that enjoy wheat beers, it is much better than say a Blue Moon. That being said, I would drink again if offered one but I won't be seeking this out.

Cheers!

A straw yellow cloudy pour with about a half inch of foam with pretty decent lacing.

Lots of wheat notes, earthy malt, coriander, slight sweetness.

Tastes like it smells, maybe a little less vibrant than the nose suggested. Some sweetness from the honey, coriander, wheat flavour is boss with some lemon zest. A good taster overall.

Light bodied with plenty of carbonation, a fairly smooth and average mouthfeel for the style.

Drinkability? An easy enough drinker. I wouldn't turn it down if offered.

A - A fairly active pour... Two plus fingers of tightly packed crisp pure white head... Modest retention gives way to a rather full lacing... An ever so slightly hazed pale yellow with some bright orange highlights... Quite still with only a stray carbonation bubble hear or there...

S - A very nice crisp clean lemon zest aroma to start... A very subtle but inviting moderate spiciness highlighted by clove... Some fresh cut grass... Some faint yeasty character... Some additional muted candied sugar notes... A touch of bubblegum sweetness too...

T - Bubblegum... Banana... Some lemon and orange zest... Some subtle spice notes... A bit a of candied sugars on the finish...

M - Light bodied... Exceedingly smooth... A tad on the thin side... Just the slightest of carbonation... Simple and straightforward...

D - A simple yet solid Hefeweizen... The aroma is top notch, but all other categories are either average or a touch above average... I would drink again if given the opportunity, but not one I would highly recommend or go out of my way to sample... Quite sessionable at 4.5% ABV...
