I picked up a 4 pack of this on a recent trip to Nashville and decided to give it a go today... I love the regular BHM so I'm really excited to see what a little oak aging does with this...
This pours out into my AB pint glass an incredibly murky reddish hue with a very small and quickly fading thin wispy head... There's nothing clear about this at all... Very murky appearance...
Slightly oaky aromas wafting out of the glass... A bit of sweetness from the malts followed by a punch of pine from the hops... fairly subdued, I must say... Doesn't have nearly the pop that the regular version does... I'm guessing the oak has quieted this one down some... I will say that as it warms, the aromas get a little more pronounced and the hops begin to shine a little more... Quite nice overall...
A punch of those pine hops right off the bat but the earthiness of the oak and the sweetness of the malts pull that bitterness back and meld everything together quite nicely. The booze is warming in this for sure. It's a sipper... In a good way though.. Hints of that oak keep resurfacing bringing to mind a bourbon aspect to this... again, quite nice...
I liked this one... As much as the regular version? Not so sure about that. That's one of my favorite reds (might be my favorite) and it' s tough to top that beer when fresh... That being said, this is a good effort and one that I plan on enjoying while it's still around.
