To our brewers the "Side Project" series of beers signifies an opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and unique styles while utilizing creativity. To our fans it represents a chance to sample an exclusive beer crafted just for them. Each "Side Project" volume is a limited edition, one-time batch featuring a new...BREWING IMPROVISATION.
For our next Side Project beer, Terrapin is going down on the farm, Maggie's Farm that is. Originally created for the farm workers along the French/Belgian border during the Middle Ages, Farmhouse Ales were typically brewed with whatever grains were available. For this version, Terrapin is using barley, wheat, oats, and rye.

22 oz bottle of the new Side Project that I just happened upon when I made a unscheduled stop at Hop City. The bottle was around 6 bucks per usual. Looks like I get to kick off the first review of this beer. Served up in a tulip.

A: Pours a pertty nice and glowing yellow in color. It does have a light twinge of orange to it now that I look at it a bit more. Held to the light it comes out more and more lemony yellow. Has a good bit of haze to it which is always nice and within that haze you can see the hearty and very active carbonation this thing has going on. Got about a finger of white head off the pour but that falls pretty quickly to a thin ring and few swirls on the top cap. It does what it can to put up some lace, but most of it just slides right back down into the body. Not a bad start.

S: Smell is interesting and absolutely earthy. Lots of grains coming across that give this beer an almost hearty smell. The rye spiciness is very much there which is a bonus in my eyes. There is a very nice lemon presence that is very fresh, smells just like squeezed lemon. Getting some floral notes along with some grass. Not bad at all, but that is about it. Not getting any funky notes or dirty notes which I come to expect from a Saison, at least a little bit.

T: This is very nice but a little different than what I expected. First off you get those grains. Light rye spiciness comes out a bit more over the more typical grains you find in a saison. Then comes the oat, which is really interesting. This brings a different level of earthiness and heartiness to the flavor. Almost a light sweetness that has a twinge of nuttiness. Right behind the grains you get that lemon. Very nice lemon with the juice and meat. Mix that in with some green apple skin and we have a nice combo. Floral hops really round this out bringing a light bitterness to that lemon presence. I really dig this but yet again, I am not getting any funk or dirt that I yearn for when I hop into a Saison. Still very nice and I really like it.

M: Medium body with a nice carbonation that makes this beer quite crisp and a joy to drink on. There is almost a touch of creaminess in the back end which really plays with the feel in a positive manner. Slight bitterness cuts lightly, but mostly earthy and lightly sweet on the palate. ABV is light, but brings in a slight heat on the throat. Aftertaste is that lemon and apple presence which is always nice.

D: I could easily pound this beer and I had to pace myself so I could grasp what this brew has going on. Very quenching and oh so refreshing. The flavors really work well for me but the only negative I can find is the lack of funk or gritty dirtiness farmhouse ales tend to bring. Still it has a good flavor and aroma and it really does make a good summer beer. Just as you can expect from Terrapin, this is their take on the beer so there are few curveballs thrown in to make it their own. I can respect that. Still another solid offering by the Side Projects in my eyes.

Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale – from Terrapin. Bomber picked up at an unknown bar in Robinson – you know the one – where they used to have Strip District salads. Reviewed 11/02/24 (Review 3243). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bomber. Stored at a cooler at the bar, 39 degrees at home for the last decade. Served at 54.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 57.8 degrees F.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), clear.
Body – Deep Gold (SRM 6), clear. Under direct light, same. Rear-lite, same.
Head – None. Just a few roiling bubbles which rapidly disappear, leaving only a narrow, broken bubble ring around the edge.
Lacing – None
Aroma –3.5 – Very weak graininess. No yeast, no hops, no alcohol (6 % ABV according to BA, label unmarked).
Flavor – 3 – Begins slightly sweet with an odd background flavor. No yeast, no hops, no roasted malt, no spiciness. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No ethanol. No gastric warming occurs.
Palate – 3.5 – Thin; watery; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated bottle) Wow! Guess I shouldn’t have waited 10+ years to crack this last bottle. I remember I used to really like this one – I bought all I could find even though it meant driving 2 hours to the Pittsburgh area. Back in those days, Terrapin was independent and made some good beers; when heading into the South, Athens and the brewery were always scheduled stops.

Interesting beer with the peach added. I'm new to the beer reviewing side of things, so this was a first. I liked the lightness of the beer - something you could easily drink on a hot summer day. I will definitely be looking for similar beers to try over the hot months of summer!
