I had this after a Lagunitas IPA and on first couple of sips, was disappointed. Its very, very smooth and to me, has no aroma. On taste, it has a nice IPA bite and a good finish. It sort of grows on you and I think if you started drinking this without another, it would be better. (293 characters)

Even by American pale ale standards, it doesn't have the satisfying grapefruit-y bite I expect from a pale ale. The bar I'm having it in may have an older keg that may have skunked slightly, so I'm being more lenient, but just not what expected. Still decent, though. (267 characters)

12oz bottle into a wine tumbler.

A: Appealing, clear medium-copper with a 1/2" head that dissipates quickly & leaves little retention. Lacing is nonexistent.

S: Lots of malt, cracker, cereal. Buried in there I'm getting a faint citrus-hop component. I actually like the subtlety here, even for a brew called 'hopsecutioner'.

T: Some balanced hop character up front, hits with pine & a bit of grapefruit. Mid-palate reads to me more like an amber ale, pretty crackery. The finish has a nice lingering hop-bitter note that wraps things up pretty well.

M: A bit oily, a bit soapy, overall very slick. Carb is too low in my opinion, really makes this brew more one-dimensional than it could be.

O: I don't hate it but I'm really not blown away. It really fails to live up to its namesake, but does a nice job of toying around with being more of an OK English-style IPA. I'll give it extra points for masking the high-ish ABV so effectively - I feel like I could murder a 6er of these guys. (1,003 characters)

Appearance: Halfway clear in regular glass. Huge head of off white suds. Big loopy lace.

Aroma: Yummy dank hops. Definitely some citrus. Nice.

Taste: Pleasantly citrus and tropical happiness. Little dry at finish but a superb IPA overall! (240 characters)

12 oz bottle. Pours orange with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of citrusy hops, tropical fruit and biscuit malt. Body is full and tangy. Citrusy hops, bready malt and ripe fruit fill the mouth. Finish is long, dry, and grapefruity. Delicious brew. (286 characters)

Drink by 5/13/15, 12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a clear golden-orange color with a small creamy white head that reduces to a thin film on top, leaving some nice lacing behind

S- piney hop up front with a trace of citrus, biscuity malt overtakes the hops slightly, some earthy yeast on the close

T- flavor up front starts a little flat, but then some piney and earthy hops kick in, the finish is slightly herbal with a malty linger

M- medium body and medium carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a creamy finish

O- a little malt dominant for an IPA, drinkable but would like a little more hops (632 characters)

The color is orangish copper, and contains swarms of sediment. The smell contains a hint of citrus, but not much else. The taste has a little pine and a lot of pepper, but not much else in the flavor department. Both the smell and the taste are pretty weak, especially for a name like Hopsecutioner and stating that the drinker will loss their hophead over it. I'm pretty disappointed in it. It's an ok drink, but I'll never get it again. It's one of my least favorite IPAs. (474 characters)

Best by: 12.19.14. Drank 11.13.14. 12oz bottle poured into a Mason Jar pint.

A: Pours a hazy bright orange with two fingers of bright, billowing head. Lots of big pitting, small patches of lacing, dissipates to a few small islands and a high collar. A fair amount of suspended particulates. Light visible carbonation.

S: Earthy, metallic, traces of what could resemble hops... but nowhere near enough to get past the grunge/yeastiness/biscuity aroma. Awful for an IPA, and to be frank, awful for any beer style.

T: Weak. Little to no clarity. Pepper and Earth. Bready malt, toasted biscuit... once again, awful.

M: Watery and bitter. Not much carbonation, dull to taste. Lingering earthy bitterness reminds me of how awful this smells and tastes well after I last went though those painful endeavors.

O: An incredible disappointment from a beer which I didn't even have high hopes for, just that it would be a decent regional IPA to drink in the Southeast. But this is not even close, not by a long shot. I'm giving a 2 all around for effort.

Maybe I had an infected bottle, but unless someone one day hands me this beer, I will not be having it again. (1,158 characters)

From bottle, took me to 4th of a six pack to figure out. Decent offering but definitely more malt than hops. Smells hoppy, initial taste is hops but malty takes over and lingers with a malty bite rather than a bitter finish. Almost in agreement with another review that called this a pale ale. Maybe my review would be different if I tasted blind and was told this was a pale ale. Worth a bottle but maybe no more unless you like a malt hop combo leaning toward the malt side. (476 characters)

Pours a honey orange with a slight red tint and a thin white head. Earthy, rye, and citrus hop musk. Tastes of sweet citrus, rye, bready and pine. Medium light body, nice moderate pine resin aftertaste. Some lacing down the glass. (235 characters)

Great brewer, great hop-forward beer, but 2nd tier IPA.

A: Medium copper, haze, rich off-white head. Strong lacing and appearance. Sticky.

S: Pine dominant (apropos Georgia). Grapefruit, orange peel, and pineapple blend with grass and bright malts.

T: Like smell but with more caramel malts. However, soon the hop bitter, citrusy and tropical flavors grow and it's all hops into a big and bitter, bright, blaring finish.

F: ok, a bit too sweet for me.

O: Always enjoy this brewer, but this one's a mid-pack IPA. (516 characters)

Appearance: Poured semi-hazy, Amber color. Two finger off-white head, good retention and lacing.
Smell: Nice resiny, piney, fruity aromas and a good sweet malt smell.
Taste: The hop flavors weren't as prominent in the taste as the aroma. Pretty malty for beer with hops in the name.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, nice creamy mouthfeel.
Overall: Not a bad beer, just thought it was a little underwhelming, probably won't seek this one out again in the future. (454 characters)

Drinking a tall draught right now at Buffalo Wild Wings. I'd previously tried it from the bottle and wondered if it would taste different from the keg. The answer: no. Both times I've been disappointed. As a previous reviewer opined, the name is deceptive. This is not the hop bomb the name suggests. Not even close. It's not bad. Not bad at all. But it's utterly forgettable. A "Hopsecutioner" should never be forgettable. (423 characters)

Poured from a bottle into pint glass in January 2015.

Appearance: Deep amber, with nice thick and light colored head. The head lasted a pretty long time, and left a thick coating on the inside of the glass.

Smell: Pleasant, with a strong influence of hops bitterness in the aroma. There is some sweet malty aroma, which balances the hops for a nice aroma.

Taste: A nice mix of hops, and herbs in the flavor, that make for an interesting and complex amber ale, but with a strong bitterness from the hops. There is a nice after-taste with a hint of bitterness from the hops, which lasts for a while but not too long.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and crisp, with a medium body.

Overall: This is an interesting and complex IPA that is not overwhelmed by the hops. (753 characters)

From 12oz bottle labeled enjoy by 4/15 into belled pint glass.
L- darker amber with reasonable head
S- Malty for all the hop hype on the label
T-balance tips towards malty
F-slightly low on carbonation, but not far off (219 characters)

Smell: Nice, but not as fragrant as I'd expected from a beer whose very name brags of hop potency.
Taste: Certainly very hop-forward, as one would expect from the name. Nice malt undertone, more than a backbone- but the hops carry the day- again, as one would expect given the name. The taste also belies the fairly high ABV.
Mouthfeel: pleasantly quaffable, although sessioning these would probably not be a good idea- unless you plan to spend the night. (455 characters)

I'm from Eugene Oregon. Not so much snobbish as particular. May be the same thing. Terrapins seems to be a fine brewer, but from my experience, to call something "Hopsecutioner" would mean something quite hoppy. Hoppy this is not. I've had black hole inducing puckers and fifty variations more hoppy than this (Hop Valley Alpha Centuri Binary, Stone Crime, Russian River Pliny The Elder, Bonyard Hop Venom etc. etc.). I give it a low rating for the poor naming. It matters ;) (475 characters)

I really liked the orange tinge to the brew, it added to the thick, white head that had really good staying power. That's pretty much where the distinctive parts of the beer end. The smell was basic IPA and the mouthfeel was mostly carbonated. I will say the taste was bold lightly citrusy, so kudos there. Overall, it was a pretty good IPA but nothing really that made it stand out from the pack. (400 characters)

Not sure when it was bottled, but the "enjoy by" date is 18 March 2015. Today is 26 October 2014.

Poured into an ordinary pint glass.

Pours a pretty orangish-gold, one finger head settles down to a half finger and stays there for the duration. Foam is nice and dense, nice lacing.

Not a ton of smell, but what is there is hoppy and invigorating.

Taste emphasizes the bitter, but is not overboard. Slightly piney. You know you're dealing with hops here. Edit- more experienced reviewers than I note a "peppery" quality to the taste. I think that is a perfect description for the dominant impression of this beer; peppery hoppiness.

Really nice mouthfeel, definitely not a thin beer; and the carbonation is up to the level of the hops.

Enjoyable beer. (762 characters)

Appearance: a deep orange, almost red, color. two fingers of an off white head with strong retention and a pretty good lacing. strong clarity with just a little bit of darkness to it.

Smell: cirtus hops, hop resin and pine sap. strong caramel to toffee sweetness.

Taste: opens with a little bit of toasted grains, followed by a citrus to piney hop. back end is a mix between strong caramel and darker malts with a little bit of resinous hop.

Mouthfeel: medium to full bodied. feels strong than 7.3%. very low linger bitterness.

Overall: this one is a bit dark and a bit sweet for what I look for in an IPA. a low bitterness almost makes it come off has a hoppy red ale really. (683 characters)

Great dating on this 12-12-14. Should be fresh. 1/2 finger of white head on top of a pure golden snifter of gorgeous brew. Quite the looker. Piney and floral aromas coming through as well as the hint of some bitterness from the hops. Clear, ringing pine flavor up front, light bitterness, and the thought that a bit more bitterness would really help with the balance. Light mouthfeel, only slightly oily, but in my opinion pretty much spot on for what an IPA should 'feel' like. Just as expected, well crafted. This was quite good. Could hit the regular 'warm weather' rotation if this becomes a little easier to find in the area. (630 characters)

A Nice malty IPA. The pronounced malt in this beer definitely helps balance the assertive hops. Has a lot of biscuit and malt notes in the aroma and the taste as well. Good mouthfeel, and perfect carbonation. Overall a good beer but not great. (244 characters)
