12 oz bottle, best before 8/2013, poured into a DFH IPA glass

A- A slightly hazy golden amber color with a nice two finger white head.

S- Not very hoppy, getting some floral and citrus notes, kind of grainy, some biscuity malts. Nose reminds me of a regular pale ale.

T- Hoppier than the nose, citrus and floral hops up front, piney hops in the finish, nice sweet, bready malt back, good balance.

S- Smooth, medium body.

O- An enjoyable IPA, but doesn't wow me. It does have great balance. Was hoping it would be hoppier, kind of feel like this could be called an APA.

7.3% ABV. Best if enjoyed by: Week 1 of September 2013. Acquired a few days ago at a local bottle shop. Cost was something like $6.00. I dig the creative stylistic label art. 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with branded green pressure cap served into a Uinta pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery's reputation, though this is my second Terrapin beer and I wasn't impressed with the first one.

Served cold, straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a five finger beige colour head. Nice thickness, nice cream. Good (~4-5+ minute) retention. No bubble show. Soapy uneven lacing. Unimpressive frothiness. Appears somewhat soft.

Body colour is a clear pale yellow. Unimpressive vibrance. No yeast particles are visible. Translucent.

Decent appearance for the style overall. There's definite room for improvement. Par for the style, if a bit light in colour.

Sm: Hop character is quite timid. Generic floral hops, light soapiness, and some lemon citrus hop character. Pale malts. Clean. Not horribly fresh. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. A biteen grainy. A dash of amber malts. Average in strength. Pretty average for the style as well; I'm unimpressed with it so far.

T: Okay. Floral hop character works well with the simple pale malt foundation. A hint of grapefruit hop character and light accompanying bitterness on the climax. A dash of nectary hops. Not as juicy and vivacious as I want it to be. Hop character is timid and unevocative overall. Not a lot of depth of flavour here. Somewhat grainy. Simple and uninspired. Little subtlety. I will say that I like the balance, but it seems easy to pull off given the simplicity. Boring and somewhat bland. I do like it, but there's nothing unique or special here. It doesn't seem to try for much.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Clean. Lightly refreshing. Decent presence on the palate. Decent thickness. Decent body. Suits the flavour profile middlingly. Decent execution.

Dr: A low-ambition IPA that achieves its mundane goals. Drinkable with a decently hidden ABV. Quite unimpressive and uninspired. Why brew this? I wouldn't get it again, nor would I recommend it to friends. I'm 0 for 2 on Terrapin. Looking forward to trying more of their beers in the hopes that this lack of quality is the exception - not the rule. That said, I do think it's above average overall. I'm hard on it because I see potential.

Low B-

Served on tap at the EMORY Convention Center and Hotel Friday 24 May after a 2-day drive from Connecticut. Delicious and very satisfying. This would be my regular brew if not for Dogfish 60-minute IPA. Liked this Terrapin in the bottle, like it better on tap.
