A: Dark black body with a coffee and cream head.

S: Dark malt and coffee, With a nice earth and pine hop aroma. Definitely picking up a good amount of the malt in this one.

T: Good hit of bitterness up front. Pine and grapefruit with a hint at earthy that blends easily into coffee and fresh baked bread. There is something a little odd in the aftertaste, but I can't put my finger on it.

M: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. A bit of a creamy mouthfeel to it.

O: Overall fairly tasty, but it seems a little more in the realm of hoppy stout, which I totally don't mind. (599 characters)

Liked this beer but hard to call it an IPA the malt and sweetness really took over. Nice dark brown look, big boozy smell. Booziness noticeable at start but faded quickly. Mouthfeel was very carbonated almost fizzy. I liked the taste a lot just wished for more hop in flavor, smell and bite. Well worth a try. (309 characters)

This was my third attempt at a black ale and it was definitely the best, but I'm still not in love with the style. Totally drinkable but wouldn't go out of my way. (163 characters)

A: Black, opaque, 1 inch khaki head that leaves good lacing

S: Floral, piney, citrus hops, a little malt in the distant background

T: Pine, floral, lemony hops up front, then a sweet coffee, caramely malt flavor next that really balances the hop punch that you get up front

M: Medium to full, coats the mouth and lingers for a bit after the sip is gone

O: A really nice beer. This style is right up my alley and Terrapin does a good job executing it. (460 characters)

12oz bottle into a teku glass.

A- Jet black color, near opaque. Mocha tan colored 2f head, fades to a film leaving lots of sticky lacing. Quite bubbly.

S- Clean citrus and floral hop aromas. Dark bready roasted malts with caramel sweets.

T- Dark roast, just shy of burnt, malts. Chocolate, caramel. Enough citrus hop to tame the malts.

M- Well carbonated, drinkable. Strong malts, some hop bite. Dry finish.

O- Not bad, but not what I'd call an IPA. A hoppy dry stout/porter, perhaps. (489 characters)

UGLY Bottle, terrible name. Love this style which is between porter and IPA. This one finishes mid-pack. Like the brewer. (bottle into tulip)

A - Pours light brown head of 2 finger foam atop a brown-black body. The head settles quickly but leaves nice, thick lace.

S - Sweet, chocolate malt with coffee. Citrusy, pine hops are in background, grassy, herbal.

T - Like smell, it's sweet, toffee malt up front with brown sugar, coffee, and caramel. Hops assert mid-palate mostly pine and lemon rind, and then it finishes roasty and charred woody. Good finish.

M - Medium body, mid carbonation, and dry finish.

D - Nice roasty Black IPA, more of a porter. (658 characters)

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately slow and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted malts, coffee, light chocolate, piney hops and some floral undertones.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some definite roasted malts, coffee, some chocolate, a resiny pine bitterness and faint floral hops.

Mouthfeel: It has a low-medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.

12 oz bottle of Capt’n Krunkles Black IPA poured black and opaque with a good size, durable tan head that left splotchy lacing.

Aroma: pronounced hops with faint malts. Nonetheless, appealing.

Flavor: more balanced. Unlike many black IPA;s, IMO, this one successfully integrates the substantial hop load with a substantial amount of medium and dark malts. Its success is due in large part, I suspect, to not going overboard with the ingredients. Terrapin also has done a fine job of matching the malts to the hops. (524 characters)

$ 2.25/12 oz bottle at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA
Bottle dated 11.14.14 at 40 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma weak pine
Head small (2 cm), light brown, creamy, slowly diminishing
Lacing OK – partial rings and sheets of various size bubbles.
Body very dark red amber, clear
Flavor very weak – only slightly bitter with no distinctive hoppiness – no pine, no citrus, no tropical fruit – the only hint of hops is in the aroma. No malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate light to medium, watery, soft carbonation.

A not particularly good beer IMHO. This is supposedly only available in the box set so it appears that the seller broke the set down to sell the individual bottles. Usually the offerings from Terrapin range from good to very good – I have to assume that this sample was mishandled somewhere along the line. If I can find another, I’ll update this review. (885 characters)

Right off the bat, have heard some pretty good things about Terrapin (and who wouldn't love the Grateful Dead reference?)... anyways, poured from a 12oz bottle into my Breaker Brewing Co. snifter. Beautiful jet black body with a inger or so of off white head. Not a big nose on this one, but some bitter chocolate, and dark malt, and a hint of licorice were there. Not a big hop nose at all, and it would seem as though this was v. fresh (11/14/14 enjoy by date). Nice flavors of coffee up front, with a nice bitter middle note, as well as a nit of a floral hoppy taste as it warmed up. For a Black IPA, maybe just a bit lagging on the flavor complexity... wanted a bit more hop flavor to balance the nice maltiness and appropriate amount of bittering. Great mouthfeel, reminiscent of a nice porter or BIPA. Overall, a decent beer, but I would likely chase down a Self-Righteous or NightTime if the options were available. Decent grade for the style. (950 characters)

Paid only $2.50 for the single much cheaper than the bomber counterparts. It must be good since this was previously an Anniversary ale.

A - A bit lighter shade of black than I am used to for the style I can see some brown hues at the base. Head is exceptional a 1/2 inch of mocha solid goodness making for great lacing.
S - Hmm despite it being a black IPA it smells more like a black ale with roasty goodness, some coffee, and mild citrus hops.
T - Pretty good balance of roast to hops but it does come off slightly acidic. Rather sweet but really nothing to rave over.
M - Light to medium really easy to drink. Decent.

Overall it was worth picking up and I am glad these are being released cheaper as 12 oz offerings. In a way though it was like that peanut butter porter they made OK but it wasn't super tasty. (815 characters)

Poured into a 20oz Nonic. If you hold the beer up to a bright light you can catch some dark brown hue's around the edges but for the most part it's black as space. The thin, lightly tanned head is creamy and inviting.
The dark roasted malt notes dominate but the there's also a spicy herbal aroma on top of it all.
I pick up a lot of coffee, and cocoa notes in the flavor along with a rich woodsy, leafy, moist soil maltyness to everything. The hop bite on the tail-end is firm and thankfully not overwhelming like most black IPA's.
The mouthfeel is silky smooth and the carbonation is perfectly light.
Overall I've got to admit that the Black IPA is not my favorite style but I still try them out on occasion hoping to find one that I'll love--and now I have. (761 characters)

"The legend of 'Krunkles' begins on the high seas with this adventurous Black I.P.A. With a treasure chest full of hops, and malts as dark as the depths of the deep, this pirated beer is worth walking the plank to." Brewed in the style of an American Black IPA. Previously released as Side Project #10, this beer has been recently pulled from retirement and made available exclusively in Terrapin Variety packs. Previously available in 22 oz. bottles and limited draft, currently available in 12 oz. bottles.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Terrapin snifter. Served above 54º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a silky creamed head of a pale beige complexion over a deep brown body. Retention is medium+, lacing is light and spotty. 3.75

(Smell) Aromas of pale, medium toasted caramel, black patent malts with a balancing blend of herbal, piney and fruity hop aromas to round the aroma out. Bitterness is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Piney, herbaceous and resinous hop notes up front join a background of black patent and lightly roasted barley malt with a subtle sweetness. The balance is very close and the flavor is quite accessible for the style. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, thinly viscous, slightly dry. Body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is very slightly bitter and roasted over sweet. Alcohol presence is light, off characters are to a minimum. 3.75

(Overall) I consider Capt'n Krunkles one of the more mild mannered Black IPAs I've recently tried, but I appreciate the balance and what it brings to the style. This is one of the most drinkable Black IPAs that I have had as well. I'm glad to see it make a return, and it may be a deal breaking beer worth purchasing a Terrapin variety pack just to get a taste, or three. 3.75

Infinite thanks to Bennettrox for supplying me with my long lost White Whale! :)

A - Pours a near pitch black body, with a predominant tan creamy head of about two fingers. Lace was great and the head dissipated to a nice lightly foamy ring.

S - There's a surprising amount of piny, floral hop notes here! But the biggest contenders are bit roasted notes, chocolate and light notes of roasted coffee.

T - There's still a fairly strong bitter bite. Hoppyness is subdued, but definitely there: floral, woodsy and piny...just like I like it! Nice chocolate, coffee and roasted notes round it out.

M - Creamy, medium to full body. Good carbonation level.

D/O - Drinkability is great.

I know this isn't at it's peak, but for it's age, it's still extremely enjoyable and just about everything I imagined it would be! The only downside is that it makes me a lot more depressed that I didn't get a chance to try it fresh, as I know it would have been amazing...

I need another Ryan... (988 characters)

Oh the long lost Krunkles, I have been searching so long for you! I finally found this pirate in a small liquor store in north Atlanta, captured him, opened him, and pored him in my belly. I had seriously been looking for this beer for many months, as I missed out on it when it 1st came out and it has been sold out for many months.

A - A very dark Porter, Stout looking color. A Mine had no head and little lace retention. maybe because its been on the shelf for a year.

S - Very hoppy. If you closed your eyes, you would expect an IPA. You would be shocked when you see it looks like a porter.

T - Fantastic! It has everything that I like in a porter and an IPA. Chocolate and coffee malts up front, but then finishes like an IPA. Great aftertaste.

M - Very crisp. Smooth throughout, with a nice alcohol mixed with chocolate aftertaste.

D - Oh my, I could drink this all night. I am very glad I grabbed 2 bottles. Terrapin needs to release this one again some day. (975 characters)

thanks to a BA trader, wish i could remember which one...

after too many weeks (months ?) on the shelf, poured cold and black (as advertised) to a sun king shaped pint with a thin, tan, short lasting head leaving hints of lace as the glass is tipped.

fairly subtle hoppy aroma with toasted malts in the wayback (?).

hmmm... i'm thinking maybe the hops have settled a bit while this one rested on the shelf. first couple sips are smoky, dark malts, dark semi-sweet chocolate - perhaps leaning toward baker's chocolate even / slightly bitter.

light bodied, creamy, subtle bitter, very interesting.

drinkable - sure, a bomber's worth. (637 characters)

Reviewed from notes from a recent tasting.
Poured from a 22oz bomber into a Cigar City Snifter.

A: Black, but not completely opaque, somewhat of a "clear-black" with a brownish head.

S: Chocolaty, toffee, malty, roasted espresso.

T: Slightly hoppy at first, very malty and chocolaty, towards the finish with a chocolate sweetness left behind.

M: somewhat of a thin, mealy-feel with a medium body porter-esque, not light and bitter like an IPA.

O: Not a bad beer but not really as advertised. The group consensus was that it really tasted/seemed MUCH closer to a porter than a Black IPA. The malty and chocolaty notes really dominate and again, not a bad beer just not coming off as a Black IPA IMO. (703 characters)

22oz bomber shared with mrmanning, StephenRich, Chris, and Erin. Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black, with a thin cap of beige froth and strings of lacing on the tulip. Complex nose is chocolate, vanilla, oak, roasted malt, perfume, floral hops, baking sugar, and coffee grounds. Quite appealing. Taste is roasted malt, burnt toast, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, grassy and leafy hops with a lingering, citric bitterness. High IBUs are evident on the palate. Mouthfeel is creamy-foamy upfront, fuller than medium bodied, bitter hop bite precedes a drying finish with some roast, cocoa, and flaked oats on the cough. A satisfying Black IPA, balanced compared to others that I've tried but no less enjoyable. (714 characters)

A Dark, cloudy, can't see through it unless you thin it out a bit. It is a dark brown. Nice thick head.

S Strong hop aroma that is floral. No citrus or pine aromas, or at least they are muted. Typical IPA.

T Very much like at IPA in initial taste. I would have expected more roast up front, but it wasn't there. The finish is more chocolaty, but still not a lot. There is a little sweetness in the finish as well as some astringency.

M Medium heavy, good CO2, head lasted most of the glass.

D Definitely a repeat beer. (522 characters)

A: Appears black in the glass. Forms a large dull mocha-colored head that has good retention and leaves a good amount of lacing on the side of the glass.

S: Rather aromatic. Citrus and pine with just a hint of roasted malt.

T: Starts off with the mild flavor of roasted malt then develops into a hoppy citrus character and a moderate bitterness before the roasted malts, and a bit of alcohol, return on the finish.

M: Medium in body with appropriate carbonation.

D: I almost wonder if I got a different beer than everyone else, as I found this beer to be one of the most restrained black IPAs I've had with only a light flavor of roasted malts and a still able to retain a lot of the typical IPA character. (714 characters)

Ahhh...the infamous Capt'n Krunkles. 220z poured into a Pint Glass.

A - Dark black with a fluffy latte-colored head. Pretty nice retention, leaves some soapy lacing on the glass.
S - Roasted coffee and dark chocolate dominate with a bit of caramel, malt, and some piney hops. Seems this has lost whatever kick it may have once had, smells like an over-the-hill IPA.
T - This is supposed to be an IPA? Not really detecting much hoppiness, I suppose I was expecting something more like Sublimely Self-Righteous. However, when judged along the lines of a Baltic Porter or even Schwarzbier, this is very nice. Dark roasted malt, deep coffee, caramel, and perhaps just a slight bit of smoke. Rich, earthy finish is nice and warming.
M - Fairly creamy with a medium body and medium-low carbonation.
D - Pretty nice, I'm not having any issues with the bomber. Again, a good beer, but it seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis. (928 characters)

Aromas of dark chocolate and espresso with some mild earthy hoppy smells. Lots of roasted and cocoa maltiness.
The taste is a great deal of roasted and astringent malts. A fair amount of chocolate and powdery cocoa and earthy bitterness. Unfortunately not as balanced as I would like. I am not a hophead but I almost would crave some citrus hoppiness to challenge the roastiness. Maybe some dark fruitness or something, this is just too bitter.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a sharpness to it up front that then gets more slick and oily feeling as you swallow.
Overall this is a decent intepretation of a Black IPA, but if I tasted it blindly I would have called it a overly coffeed Baltic Porter. Needed more balanced somewhere, the Black IPA is not a beer which should be "imperialized" in my opinion. (810 characters)
