Poured a slightly hazy, deep golden to amber with a slowly receding and foamy white-head; intricate lacing on glass.

Not much going on here: some faint grassy hops and malt, but the aroma becomes fainter after the pour.

I have tried many "rye" ales and have simply not been able to detect much rye flavor, but this one does have a nice rustic and cereal flavor I associate with rye. The soft and smooth malt flavor is also pleasant, while the hop bitterness is very restrained.

The mouth feel is smooth but does leave some lingering bitterness on the tongue. The carbonation keeps the ale refreshing and zesty.

The label states "The South's Original" and features a banjo playing terrapin a la The Grateful Dead. The ale is very good but hardly original or distinct. The rye does give it a little extra flavor sometimes missing in other mild, low-hopped pale ales.
