A- Golden-copper like any average beer, nothing shocking.

S- Apples. Fresh juice smell bordering on cider. I'm fighting a summer cold so I may not be the best reviewer in this category.

T- Fair to good. The rye is evident in the dryness but subdued as are the hops. Not a strong brew in any category but a good introduction to rye for those who are not very adventurous. A 'gateway beer' if you will.

M- Full and fizzy, not very smooth or soft

D- Absolutely drinkable. The kind of beer you should grab a six pack of to cleanse the pallet between really outstanding beers.

Purchased at Whole Foods in Birmingham. This beer pours a nice copper color with a small but stubbornly long lasting head. Smells like a good APA with malts and hops present in the nose. This beer tastes exactly what I want in an APA. There is a great malt, hop, and citrus flavor present here. This is a high quality brew. Lacing is present on my glass. As a Southerner, I'm proud that this beer is brewed in the South. It has become one of my favorite APA's so far. I will be buying Terrapin Rye Pale Ale again and again.

A- golden honey amber with a chill haze and a decent off white head. ok retention and little spots of lace.

S- spicy rye and loads of grainy goodness, pineapple, grapefruit, and some pine.

T- more spicy rye and lightly toasted barley with a powdery spruce hop finish. a little fruity bitterness as well works nicely with the rye sourness. orange, pineapple, grapefruit, and earthy english hops.

MF-lightly grainy feel, slightly resinous and a quickly fading astringency that dries out the finish.

D- mellow yet tasty flavor and a real thirst quencher.

Poured a clear golden orange color creating a tight bone white head with good retention. Some spotty lacing as the snifter drained. Aroma profile was that of toasted malts, clover honey, citrus and some faint spicy rye grain. Mouthfeel was creamy and smooth with just a touch of carbonation. The malts dominate the flavor profile with a subdued sweetness; like toasted rye bread with honey drizzled on top. Some faint orangey citrus notes come through in the finsih. Overall quite light and crisp. Would be a tasty thirst quencher served a bit colder in the hot Florida summers.

light golden orange, decent head
sweet tea, coppery malt smell, but can't detect the rye
faint but pleasant grain taste, understated sweetness (compared to the aroma), some bitterness along the sides, pleasant drying finish
medium to light body. pour gently to maintain carbonation
literally makes a mouth water for more

A pretty good Pale Ale but nothing spectacular. Copper color with a head that settles down quickly. Aroma is rather clean with some grapefruit hops, citrus fruits and maybe a touch of malt. The beer is easy drinking and refreshing. There's some grapefruit hops in there with some flowery, citrus notes and it finishes slightly bitter. Some hops in the aftertaste. Pretty solid but nothing that jumps out and says wow. I just bought a 4 pack of the Rye Squared so I look forward to what this x 2 tastes like.

Light copper color. Nice, frothy white head...rye makes for a nice lacing effect.

Fresh rye scent with some hints of honey and hops. Quite appealing.

Mmmmm, perfect balance of rye, malt and hops. This beer is good. The malts still stand tall amidst the rye and bittering hops.

Would and will buy this again next time I am in the GA area. I would definitely recommend tasting this one.

Thanks to tpd975 for one of 3 generous extras in a trade.
A very clear amber brew with a bit of a wispy head and just a little lacing.
Smell is all about the rye, a nice sweet, wheaty malt note.
Taste is much milder on the rye than the smell. Slightly sweet with a decent hop note on the finish. The rye does not overpower this beer in any way.
This is one of the best mouthfeels I've noticed in a pale ale. Very dense and smooth with just a hint of carbonation.
Very easy to drink on a hot summer evening.

Got this on-tap at Taco Mac in the Highlands in Atlanta.

Pours a good copper color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a thin layer of bubbles on top with a thick ring around the glass. It's a pretty sticky beer - the lacing sticks around throughout the drinking of the beer.

Smells pretty good. The first whiff has grassy notes, but later on it gets a bit more citrus-like with some bitter notes. The best of both worlds.

Taste is very similar to the smell. When it's cold it's more grassy than anything else, but as it warms the citrus flavor comes out more, and the finish is bitter. Pretty solid.

The mouthfeel is good. The carbonation is just right, and the thickness is good. It goes down smoothly altogether; if it were just a little thicker it would be great.

Drinkability is very good. This beer goes down very easily and it would not be difficult to drink a lot of these.

Overall I was surprised with this beer. I'd tried it in the past and did not remember it being this good. All of the flavors work very well together, and this might work its way into the rotation as an everyday beer.

I had the beer on tap at Brixx in Charlotte for $1.50...what a deal. Color was dark gold with an excellent head and lacing. Taste and smell was very good with citrus & hops and enjoyable...very well balanced. Would no doubt have again and enjoy, a good solid brew.

Poured a mostly clear light honey gold. Somewhat fizzy head that fell to a whispy cap.
Aromas of grass, some pine and some citrus rind. Hints of rye bread and some malt sweetness.
Hops hit first in the taste with the citrus rind coming through more than in the aroma followed by grass and pine. Rye are subtle, but present. Some sweet malts help round out the flavors.
Medium-light mouthfeel. Good fizzy carbonation helps clear the palate.
Quite drinkable. Low enough ABV and good enough flavor to drink all night.
This has been my go-to beer for cookouts or just keeping around the house in the summertime for a few years. Glad I could reconnect with this so well. This is also a great gateway beer.

Found this gem at my local ABC. Poured into a tulip glass. produced a nice two finger head that dissipated into islands of white foam floating in a sea of amber. Smell of the citrus along with the hops, and a slight hint of rye bread. Bottle states that along with the rye, this beer is brewed with five different hops. The taste is of a mellow hop and grapefruit that the smell alluded to. Easy drinking beer that you could consume after a hot day in the Florida sun, Not complex, but satisfying none the less. My usual barometer is, would I purchase this beer again? I would have to say yes.

Into a DFH tapered pint, pours a dark copper with a nice inch white head with decent retention, moderate lacing. The aroma has nice rye and caramel malt, nice round hop bill. The taste is rather the same, hops have a good citrus juice to it, and rides through the whole lenght of tasting, with a solid malt backbone and the rye ducking in for a show of hands. The mouth is medium, nice carbonation, a little dry, but a good quaffer. Not very complex or really that 'interesting,' but a solid beer. Could easily sit down to a case of this.

This poured a slightly hazy gold with no head. It smelled strongly of cinnamon, and faintly of honey and some rye, with no real hops scent. It tasted like light citrus hops mixed with sweet honey malt, but didn't have noticeable rye flavor. It was watery with no carbonation, and had a mild bitter aftertaste. Overall this was a very clean and easy to drink beer, but it could have used a little more character (such as more prominent rye).

12oz bottle into pint glass.

Amber hue with a light tan one finger head that settles to a razor thin cap.

Sharp and spicey hops, reminiscent of grapefruit, create most of the aroma. The grain sits in the background, giving a toasted bread aroma.

The rye provides somewhat of a light flavor compared to the other malts, giving it a cleaner flavor. This allows the hops to show a little more, in my opinion. The hops are sharp and spicey, with a little bit of citrus.

This is a very enjoyable Pale Ale. The rye gives it a nice twist and allows one to focus on the hops. Very refreshing. Recommended.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Golden with a slight haze. One to two finger head drops quicker than expected to a thick collar and thin film, with moderate lace.

S - Huge whiff of rye upfront with it's deep earthiness. Some slightly fruity and floral hops in there as well.

T - A quick sourness leads into a deep, earthy flavor from the rye. This mellows and then leads into a pine and grapefruit flavor from the hops. Finishes with a little bit of graininess and some minimal hop bitterness.

M - Moderately carbonated, and starts off with a light to medium body. By the end of the sip though, this turns completely watery and flat. I don't understand what the hell happened in this department.

D - Overall nice and crisp with some decent if not slightly lacking flavor. The mouthfeel is what messes this beer up for me.

Appearance is a cloudy (perhaps over-cooled) copper with very little head and little bits of sticky lacing

Smell is citrus and piney. Simcoe hops? mmm I love simcoe hops. Rye is definitely in there somewhere but it's mild.

Taste is full with bits of sweet sour and bitter. Very good balance.

Mouthfeel is thin and a bit dry and astringent.

Easy to drink. Goes down great cold.

I was completely thrown off by the taste of this beer...I was expecting something much different, maybe something to do with rye...
A: Pours a nice golden color that leaves a small head with decent retention

S: Very nice aroma on this one, perhaps the best aspect of the beer. Hops are present, but malts dominate. Some light fruits greet the nose, definitely citrus too... Malts provide some light caramel and toffee flavors. Overall a very mellow flavor...the hops are kept in check by the malts, and there is an underlying breadiness throughout.

T: This is one of the most balanced pale ales I've tasted. Malts are sweet, with notes of caramel and toffee. Hops are floral, slightly bitter, and give a little twang. Strong bread notes underneath it all.

MF/D: Lighter in body than other examples, carbonation is pretty good. Nicely balanced, with a lingering bready finish

The beer pours a beautiful gold color with a thick and creamy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is great! It has a wonderful pale and rye malt scent that is spicy, yet blends well with the excellent hop aroma. The taste is good. It has a crisp, pale, Carapils, and rye malt flavor that goes down easy an finishes bitter with a nice spicy, bitter hop taste. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate/good carbonation. This is a damn fine beer. I love the addition of rye. It adds another layer of complexity to a APA. The hop character is outstanding as well.

12 oz bottle Best Before 8-17-08 poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a light orange in color with very little head and lace.

S - Very faint malty bread.

T - Well balanced malts and hops, leaning toward the grassy/earth tones.

M - Little on the watery side but not bad at all.

D - Great with beer nuts! I could stand another..

On a pretty aggressive pour this had a pretty minimal head, just shy of a finger's width, but had a slightly cloudy brownish red body with a handful of bubbles coming up. Lacing was nothing special.

The smell is very sweet; really malty and fruity. The smell reminds me of some darker beers, particularly some dark Belgians.

The taste is a little bit harsher than I was expecting, given the sweetness of the smell. At first it seemed really hoppy and bitter, but it got a little bit smoother with each sip (because it was warming up, I suppose). It becomes a little bit sweeter with time.

The mouthfeel was kind of sticky.

It's mildly drinkable. I probably couldn't go through more than two of these without something inbetween to mix it up a little bit, though.

Sampled from a 12oz bottle.

A - Light golden color with good clarity and a small to moderate white head.

S - Fruity and bready.

T - Fruity then bitter with some hop flavor at the end giving it a nice, lasting aftertaste. A bit tart as well.

M - A little thin but nice low carbonation.

D - Very easy to drink.

Heard a lot about this one so was excited to try this one.
Nice, color with a medium head that didnt hang around long. Some lacing observed.
Nice melding of hops and malt in the nose. Very aromatic hops peek through the almost hidden bready malts.
Taste was pretty good. Nicely carbonated with a pretty good balance between the hops and malts.
Decent mouthfeel.
