Picked this up in Totowa recently, having never had this before. As much as I enjoyed this beer, I had to echo the sentiments of others on here when I say that this didn't feel like an American/Double IPA. The hops were here the but the surging, stinging bitterness that I expected was quite recessed and the strength of this beer came with the alcohol and the citrus and tropical flavors that held sway from start to finish.
This had a orange-almond hue to it when I poured it out, with a moderately fluffy head that quickly settled. Tons of mango, papaya, and grapefruit in the nose followed by earthy hops in the nose that offer a blast of pine and "skunk" in the middle. The hop kick is strong, but brief before quickly receding. Some caramel malt was present from the start as that took over, and the consistency of this beer was quite heavy. Was there a bit hint of chili-chocolate under this? Perhaps and this had a warming effect on me as well. Quite strong although I couldn't taste the alcohol, the resin stuck around for a while as this went down easily - a testament to the oily aspect of this beer.
While strong, I could have had a few more in sitting had I bought another one of these. The only gripe about this beer was it's categorization. I've never had an IPA quite like this and it almost felt like an "Imperial Amber" to me. Hopheads may come away a bit disappointed at this but this was one of my favorite beers from Terrapin and remarkably easy to enjoy given its strength. A must-try for anyone looking for tropical hops without the bite and sharp bitterness.
