Beer/Brewery - Indiana Krunkles/Terrapin
City/State- Athens, Georgia
STYLE – German Wheat/American IPA
ABV – 7.3%
IBU – 40
DATE – 19 JUN 2011
SERVING TYPE – 22 oz Bomber
GLASSWARE – Tumbler
APPEARANCE –Golden Orange with a good flow of bubbles form the bottom of the glass. Also this is an unfiltered beer so there is thick sediment on the bottom as well. 1/8 inch head - good lacing. AS I poured more in the glass I was able to stir up the sediment, giving the beer a nice cloudy look.
AROMA- Hoppy and sweet like honey
TASTE – Some hoppy bitterness but not too much, than you get a little sweetness behind it.
MOUTHFEEL – Smooth and creamy with a little bit if carbonation lingering on the tail end
CONCLUSION – I like this beer a lot. The problem with one time brew is that I enjoy them more than the breweries normal brews.

This is an interesting concept,Iam surprised there hasnt been more forays into melding the two styles.I poured into a weizen glass rather than my nonic for appearance and it poured nicely, hazed burnt orange tinged golden with a fluffy one and a half finger white head that left a broken ring of lace as it settled slowly.Love the in your face citric hop aromas, really fresh, slight toasted wheat malt and clove as well. The mouthfeel was much thinner than expected and seemed to take a little of the flavor away, somewhat watery with decent shot of resiny/citric hop on the palate, toasted wheat malt again comes thru a little as well.If the mouthfeel was amped up a little this beer would be great but alas it isnt and the beer is just "pretty good".

Terrapin Side project V. 15 Indiana Krunkles German Style Wheat IPA 7.3% alcohol content.

A- Poured into oversized wine glass that produces a orange fluid that a firey color when held to the light. Patchy lacing sticks to glass at will.

S- Just cut grassy hop upfront with hints of sweet malts followed by musky yeast backbone.

T-M- Taste is a bitter bite of grassy and citric hops with a mild and light malty caramel backbone followed by earthy tones of yeast and sugar. Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated and smooth with little to deter you from drinking this beer.

A good go to beer in need of hops and balance of malts and yeast.

This beer was a hazy orange color with a small white head.

Interesting aroma. I got some banana, orange, and citrus. Kind of a wit/IPA combination.

Taste followed aroma. Banana, orange, and grapefruit. A little bit of biscuity malt.

Medium-bodied, fairly crisp.

I've had a few beers from Terrapin, and wish I could get them here in Maine.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, VaTechHopHead!

A murky, dark honey-orange with a small off-white cap. Leaves the glass messy with irregular lines and sheets of sticky lace.

Strong aroma of citrus, some wheat, and alcohol heat. There's also a definite melon character to the aroma from the choice of hops used.

The flavor is largely bitter, even for the style, along with complementary citrus and melon notes (cantaloupe?). There's some sweet malt character as well, but the overwhelming bitterness hides some of that.

Medium to full-bodied for the style with moderate carbonation.

I suppose this is my favorite German-style wheat IPA...whatever the hell that means.

I've pretty much loved every Terrapin side project I've ever encountered, and after hearing about this one's release, went to several different stores to track down a bomber. Can't wait to dive into it, so here we go... 22oz bottle into traditional Hefe glassware.

Pours a golden orange hue with a slight haziness about it. Just a tad bit of head appears, which quickly dissipates leaving absolutely barely any lacing to speak of. Its as if an IPA and Hefe were mixed together, which I suppose is the entire point. Would have loved to have more head though.

Nose start off as a typical Hefe; lots of banana, clove and wheat. Then proceeds to nodes of grass, pine and lemon/orange citrus hops. I feel the latter's presence overpowers the former a bit too much. Balance isn't quite right, but still a interesting and nice aroma.

Tastes just as I expected, except in opposite order. Banana and wheat characteristics sit in the back and are more complementary rather than central flavors to the citrus and floral hops that kick it off. It finishes off rather nice and crisp with a slight bitterness that contrasts rather well against the sweet wheat and yeast. Pretty tasty stuff, but again, could use a bit more balance in the Hefe's favor.

Medium bodied and pretty drinkable. If it weren't so limited and hard to find, I'd go buy a few more. Carbonation could be better, buts that's my only real complaint in this department.

Overall, a solid offering. Although it didn't blow me out of the water as some of their other side projects have (Hopzilla, Wake N' Bake), but its safe to say that this collaboration of my two of my favorite styles worked out pretty well and is definitely worth a try.

Pours an incredibly cloudy rusted amber color with a 1 finger thick white head that quickly fades to mild spotting.

Smells for sure wheaty. Toasted bread comes to mind with a slight nutty aroma.

Tastes malty sweet with a noticeable hop bitterness. Strong herbal flavor rounded out by light orange citrus and pine.

Mouthfeel is medium with very light carbonation.

Overall is ok but not great. Not quite worth the pricetag in my opinion (which wasn't even that much). Sort of interesting for a summer beer but not something I'd really want more than a glass of.

On-tap at the Porter in Atlanta.

Pours a slightly hazy golden-copper color with a white head leaving solid lacing.

Smells of pale malts with large amounts of citrus and floral hops backed by light wheat twang.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Pale malt with hints of tangy wheat up front are joined by solid citrus and lightly herbal hops. The hops lighten up midway through the sip, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with smooth carbonation.

Overall this is a solid beer for the style, not quite out the park, such as Gumballhead, but better than many attempts. Worth a shot.

Poured a very cloudy orangish color with a good amount of beige head on it.

Smell is very nice and hoppy with a wheat smell coming through as well. some citrus smell as well.

Taste is pretty fantastic. Really great bitter hop flavor throughout. Also a nice wheat flabor coming through. This tastes exactly like the label says.

Mouthfeel is light-medium and goes down smooth and easy.

Overall a great beer that I really enjoyed. I'd love to try this again.

Nice balance between a hefe and an IPA, and who would think of such a thing. Orange and unfiltered. A good blend, hops and wheat. Carbonation is right there and its still a good mouthfeel. Some orange and other fruity taste. IBU 75.Radek's bottle.Seek one out.

Pours a golden orange with one inch of head. Nice retention. Smells of wheat, yeast, and a citrus, floral hop aroma. Taste is smooth at first with wheat and yeast up front followed by intense, bitter, floral and citrus hops at the end. There's just a hint of alcohol. It's rather light bodied which I attribute to the wheat; moderate carbonation.

The intense hops keep the drinkability down on this one, but a decent IPA overall.

22oz bottle

A- Pours a golden amber color with a nice off-white head.

S- This is a cross between an American IPA and a Hefeweizen. I am a huge fan of both styles so I was anxious to try this offering. The aroma is pretty much what I was hoping for. The wheat, banana, clove and yeast from the hefeweizen part are spot on. There are some citrusy hops in the nose as well that set this apart from your typical hefeweizen.

T- The taste is fantastic. At first, the wheat and spicy clove stand out but the hops quickly make their presence felt creating a nice lingering bitterness in the finish to complement the yeasty finish perfectly. I am really digging this beer.

M- The mouthfeel is spot on as well. It is light to medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Props to Terrapin for this unique offering. I have never tried a beer like this and that gets bonus points. I feel like they pulled off what they were trying to do and everything came together perfectly. I would love to see Terrapin make this a season offering, highly recommended!

Dark amber, cloudy body with a fluffy white head and fantastic lacing. Body seems a bit darker than it should be -- I was expecting something a little more golden.

Great nose -- very pungent. Huge citrus/tropical fruit hops, grapefruit. I didn't come into this beer expecting much, but the aroma on this has instantly lifted my expectations. And...they come crashing back down with the taste. Mediocre. A decent hop bite, but there's something missing here. A bit of a watery quality. It seems like the wheat and IPA qualities distract from, rather than compliment, eachother.

This one misses the mark. It's drinkable and enjoyable, but something's not quite right.

A: Cloudy orange hue with a fluffy white head when poured but it did not hold very well and it was only average lacing

S: Very wheat forward with some spicy hop notes, some hefe like banana notes notes too and a bit of bitter pine

T: Much like the nose, but the pine is a bit more present. Nice wheat flavor and pretty well balanced

M: Pretty smooth and easy drinking, slightly rough around the edges, but no heat

D: I found this to be an interesting beer and while it is listed as an american IPA i think it is more of a hybrid hefe and IPA and the hefe won out most of the time but the hoppiness was definitely there. A refreshing beer but not one that i am overly compelled to try again

Pours a cloudy apricot with a pinky of sand colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Breadyness, cloves & appleskins

T: Follows the nose, juicy fruit chewing gum, some piney hops lurking in the background. Grapefruit & cloves dominate as this warms. Finishes with grapefruit, piney plus cloves & a touch of juicyfruit

MF: Light medium bodied, soft carbonation

Very drinkable, but I expected more to be sure

On-Tap...

Poured into a tulip glass.

Hazy and cloudy golden/tannish color. Nice lacing and head sticks around for almost the entire glass. Really nice looking brew. Smell was grainy and wheaty with an almost fruit like scent. The taste was really really different. I applaud Terrapin for making such a tasty brew. It has a nice bitter hop punch but also that nice citrusy and lemony flavor that good wheat beers have. Downright piney and tropical at times- but you still know that you are drinking an IPA. Medium bodied and full flavored. Great beer. I loved it.

Served from tap into a sampler tumbler. Poured a hazy yellow-orange with a minimal white head. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, and subtle citrus hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, fruit, and citrus hop. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The flavor on this one was pretty nice which made it pretty easy to drink. The aroma was pretty good as well. If I would have been put in a blind tasting and had to pick the style I would have pegged it for a Belgian IPA rather than an American IPA, but there are worse mistakes that can be made out there. Pretty good brew and a must try if you can.
