The Salmon colored body was hazy, and the head formation was nearly four fingers thick, at the top of the half liter Weizen glass. The smell was exactly what would imagine a Wheat IPA would be. There were aromas of banana, bubblegum, grapefruit, and pine. The taste provided a unique combination of American critic hops, and sweet and wheat malt with delicate phenols. The hops were clearly in control of the experience, as they should be in an IPA, but the malt still showed through. It did feel more light and watery than an IPA of similar strength, and the lack of stickiness made the finish a bitter but short one. The mouthfeel became a lot more creamy, when the yeast was stirred up and poured in, and some clove spiciness crept in at that time. But this cause the bitterness to become less IPA like as well. A tasty side experiment, with no obvious flaws.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, VaTechHopHead!

A murky, dark honey-orange with a small off-white cap. Leaves the glass messy with irregular lines and sheets of sticky lace.

Strong aroma of citrus, some wheat, and alcohol heat. There's also a definite melon character to the aroma from the choice of hops used.

The flavor is largely bitter, even for the style, along with complementary citrus and melon notes (cantaloupe?). There's some sweet malt character as well, but the overwhelming bitterness hides some of that.

Medium to full-bodied for the style with moderate carbonation.

I suppose this is my favorite German-style wheat IPA...whatever the hell that means.

Appearance: pours a cloudy orange color with a one inch head that breaks apart quickly.

Smell: citrus, banana, and a decent earthy bitterenss rise from the glass.

Taste: caramel, wheat, banana, grapefruit citrus, and some earthy hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Starts out crisp and ends less crisp with a dry finish. Long lasting aftertaste.

Overall: different style beer that was enjoyable, but one pint glass was enough in a session.
