Had on-tap at Appalachian Vintner Asheville. Quick review from a 6 oz pour.
A- Pours a hazy dark amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a full sheet behind.
S- Lots of dark fruit-like aromas that kind of reminds me of a sour. Notes of black cherry. Also some caramel sweetness with a hint of booze.
T- Flavor is a kind of mish mash of toasty malt base followed by a red wine-like fruitiness and a very faint hop bitterness. It's like it wants to go in the direction of a sour but stops at the initial taste and stays in a limbo between old ale and pale ale. You can call it balance but it's more like confusion. I will say the alcohol is well masked.
M- Very slightly tart with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.
O- Very good but all the IPA and Belgian characteristics are lost and instead it's gained a different kind of complexity. I'm convinced this is a vintage keg but the owner of the establishment isn't here to confirm or deny this.

Had during Brewvival 2012! Served from tap into a Brewvival sampler imperial pint. Poured yellow-orange with a minimal off-white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, wood, wheat, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, fruit, wood, and fruit hop. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. Based on the aroma alone, I would have never guessed that this was a Belgian IPA as none of the typical aromas were anywhere to be found. However, the flavor saved this by bringing on the big banana ester and fruit characters that one would expect. The barrel really added a nice touch to this one that complimented the base brew quite nicely. A really well done brew by Terrapin. Tick.

On-tap at Brewvival 2012
Pours a clear orange with a dense white head. Nice aromas of tropical fruit, wine grapes, oak, malt, and alcohol. Taste is similar to the nose, definitely red wine-heavy with a mild malt profile and a good amount of tropical hops. Nothing really special, and I would have likely forgotten this beer if it wasn't in my notes. Sticky, with a medium-full mouthfeel and ample carbonation. Not a great Terrapin offering, no surprise given their recent track record.
