Like a bull in a china shop, Terrapin's Side Project 16 unleashes its brash and boastful taste on the palate with a flood of malt flavor, a pang of hop bitterness and the woodsy rusticity from oak- As this trifecta of taste pummels the palate, it seems to do so with some love and care.

Pouring a dark and russet brown, its rusty and reddish hues dip and weave through its heavy haze. Building a dense sand-stained head above, its tightly woven froth is in it for the duration, trailing with concentric rings at each sip.

Deeply malty with toffee, toast, brown sugar and a hint of molasses and maple, its savory and sweeter tone is supported by bready underpinnings, seemingly of spice-cake or rum-cake. As notes of orange peels and sawdust waft about the nose, that fist sip is seeming more and more intimidating.

All that malty-sweet goodness of the nose is assured in taste. Those cake-like flavors are delicately laces with spice, toast and nuttiness to allows roasted chestnuts and French toast to come about. The middle balances with citrus tones of grapefruit, oranges and tangy verbena flavor. As the sweetness breaks apart slightly, its finish allows for a sharply resinous finish to dry the palate and bitter it up a bit. Lighter oaken echoes swirl about the palate as the malt further lifts and the hops latch onto the throat.

Full bodied and long to resist any fading, the bread and sweeter textures accompany the hops and oak deep into the finish. Its spicy alcohol bite and oaky powdery texture offers a slim sense of lightness even though its cake character continues in lighter capacity.

Reminding me of Stone's Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale, the balance, power and controlled chaos is both impressive and scary- both for the brewer and for my own taste buds.

Dingy dark brown color, with a huge eggshell head. Great retention.
Aroma is pretty simple. Oak is obvious with a little underlying toasty brown malt. Not much to get excited about.
Flavor is basically a mirror of the aroma - heavy oak, with some nutty malt underneath. As I drink more, the oak becomes more pleasant and a little less overpowering. Flashes of raisin and some of the cinnamon-like character I get from beers with heavy oak additions and dark malt. Finishes bitter and somewhat dry.
Medium bodied, with soft carbonation that works well with the beer.

Not too much to say about this one. Seemingly a pretty bland base beer that’s been oaked too heavily. Not terrible, but not something I’d pursue.

"Time traveling in at number 16 in our "Side Project" series of beers is "Phlux Capacitor." This wood aged bully is brewed to an unknown style from another dimension...We hope you enjoy our interpretation of this totally fictitious ale."

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to a Terrapin Snifter. Served north of 58º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a golden caramel cream head of a frothy fluffy consistency over a highly opaque medium brown body with burgundy highlights. Retention is slightly above average and lacing is light and streaked. Appearance isn't bad, although the head retention and lacing has room for improvement. 3.5

(Smell) Very potent notes of toasted oak, maple syrup, vanilla bean amongst a medium toasted caramel grain malt base, very heavy in body. Very tame hop profile by comparison, some moderate earthy bitterness and a touch of herbal and resinous hops to pair. Dark fruit notes are also notable- figs, plums and raisins make an appearance, but they are muddled by the oak character. The sweetness of this beer's high points was choking at first, but it mellows out in time. 3.25

(Taste) The malt base consists of a simple caramel grain malt note, overlying notes of dry oak, some mild maple sweetness, a pinch of vanilla. This is a graceful sipper of a beer, I don't often drink oak aged beers that have this much oak presence in it. It's about as potent as I could feasibly allow. The flavor is a testament to seasoned beer drinkers and fans of wood-profiled beers. I did not find it overly enjoyable, but still drinkable. There's a lot going on with the oak, and it far overshadows nearly everything else in this beer. As aforementioned, this beer, while big in flavor, grows on you, and I felt it far easier to enjoy once I got past the intensity of the oak notes. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, smooth with a medium syrupy texture. Carbonation adds a touch of air to the mix to lighten up the viscosity of the beer without challenging the oak flavor. The body is medium for Strong Ales and medium+ overall. The finish is softly dry with a dragging white oak note. Alcohol presence is medium/high, perhaps amplified by Oak Aging, or the simplicity and submissiveness of the specialty malt build. The mouthfeel is one of the finer parts of this beer, or at least one of the lesser challenged components. 3.75

(Overall) Terrapin belts out the oak in this release, perhaps a bit too much so for the casual drinker, I'd recommend this only for those who appreciate Terrapin's specialty releases and certainly not for those who keep strictly to the drinkable Rye Pale Ale or Golden Ale. What I appreciated by this beer was the tame specialty malt bill and the overall cleanliness aside from the oak bill. It kept this beer approachable and enjoyable, rather than overly sweet. If you think you can handle wood-laden beers, this one will give you a run for your money. 3.5

Bottled: earlier

It's dark tea colored with a fine coat of light caramel foam. Smells of oak, toffee, nougat, cola, vanilla and some dark turbinado sugars. Flavor is smooth and sweet with a cloying sugary-ness; toss in some vanilla, nougat, roasted malts, some raisin. Medium bodied with low carb and a dry finish. A treat to try, but not something I'd seek again.
