On tap at the brewery Poured into a terrapin snifter. Multiple samples. Reviewing from notes.

Appearance: Dark, hazy, thin head that dissipates at a normal rate.

Smell: Peanut butter, hints of coco. Little malt. Very nice. Makes me think of a chocolate peanut butter milkshake.

Taste: Peanut butter up front, but fades into layers of chocolate and malt, which develop equally as the flavor profile progresses.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, almost creamy. Maybe a bit of the peanut butter milkshake carryover. A little carbonation, to boot.

Overall: One of my favorite porters. Makes a great desert beer but still quite drinkable in large amounts. Like all eight pours at the brewery tour. Multiple times.

Poured into a nonic pint glass. The liquid is almost completely black, with some dark brown hints at the edges. The pour kicks up a two-finger tan head that leaves a nice amount of lace. Definitely what I would hope a peanut butter porter would look like!

The aroma definitely has peanut butter! I was worried that there wouldn't be enough, but it's the dominant note here, even before the beer has warmed up at all. I also get some wheat bread, and hints of citrusy hops that suggest jelly... but maybe I'm just getting carried away with peanut butter associations. Either way, this is a great aroma, even if not particularly complex.

The flavor starts off with some milk chocolate, before the peanut butter comes in along with the citrusy hops. The swallow finishes clean, and then the aftertaste is mostly peanut butter, with a little bit of chocolate. The light hop presence is a really nice surprise here, and does a good job balancing the chocolate and peanut butter both bitterness- and flavor-wise.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, with a moderate amount of carbonation. I feel like it would have been better with a thicker body, but maybe that would have made it too sticky.

Overall, very good, even if it mostly focuses on one note. It feels like kind of a novelty, but of course novelties have their place, and I would definitely recommend this one.

Picked this up last week at Fairway in Woodland Park, having never given this a go before. The beer I had like this from Horny Goat was a bit thin and a minor letdown and that was the case here as well. Not as thick or as roasted as other American Porters, this beer should only be sought after for its flavor profile and not much else. Sure, it went down easily but a beer of this style need more body and strength to it to be considered a great Porter.

The pour to this was as to be expected, as this had a dark brown hue, a moderately fluffy head that faded quickly, and a good amount of lacing that lingered on the back side of my pint glass until the end of my drinking session. Not a strong aroma to this but there was quite a bit of peanut butter along with some milk chocolate. Both of those were found in the taste, along with some cocoa powder and some lactose. While not a Sweet Stout, this felt more like that than a Porter since the body and mouthfeel was light and the carbonation was a bit too overt. The aftertaste kept the nuttiness and chocolate around for a bit before they faded away, leaving an odd sweetness in their wake.

While not terribly strong, there was more than enough booze here which I felt once I polished this off. This wasn't bad but wasn't even closer to being Terrapin's best offering in their current lineup. This felt too artificial and like the Horny Goat, was only worth a go once. It would be wiser to get a Porter that was more filling and roast some s'mores while enjoying it. This will suffice alright for the warmer months but would not be my first choice if I had the heat on right now.
