Dark amber, chunky, frothy stout-like head. Looks outstanding.

Singular, lupy-hopped nose, a bit of spice biscuity, caramel, but more subtle than I might assumed for a beer with a hop in its name.

Pretty balanced between the hoppiness and malts - having never had a Mosaic-hopped beer, the hops are interesting combination of an almost cedar and earthy greenery, followed by some citrus and even herbal spiciness - there's a lot to love about that hop. That's then supported by a well-rounded malty rye.

Nice, smooth, silky even - what is this velvet?

Really enjoyed this beer, much more than I thought I would.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Enjoy by the third week of July in 2014.

A: Pours a clear deep red with a white head on top. Spots of lacing on the sides of the glass as the head dissipates in a minute or so.

S: Up front malty rye blended nicely with a the tropical nose of mosaic hops. Pretty tropical nose on this one.

T: Nice balance in this beer, a blend of tropical fruits and a hint of spice from the rye. The bitterness of the hops is harnessed by the malt backbone so it never overwhelms. Real clean flavor on this one.

M: Medium body with ample carbonation. For an IPA is has a fairly clean finish with no unwanted stickiness from the hops.

Overall I'm a huge fan of rye malts and mosaic hops so I went into this with some high expectations. It is a very solid beer that I could drink all night.

We pour a brew of ruby amber hues into our Hop City pint glasses. It holds a two finger head of chunky latte colored foam, showing solid retention into knit ropes of spidery lacing. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be very light. The aroma shows big mosaic headiness to it, with sweet and nectary, fruity, floral, and lightly citric hop zest, warming toast of rye and amber grainy grit, vanilla wafers, fumy booze, floral petal dust, lightly singed buttered white toast, and generous fruitiness of guava, passion fruit, and mango syrups. Our first impression is that the flavoring is not as hoppy as the nose would suggest, but it is still clean, fun, and easy drinking. As we sip, the taste begins with thick caramel and rye graininess, candy corn, caramel popcorn, dry fruit loops, wheat breadiness, and mosaic hops like crazy, although they show more sweetness than bitterness at this point. The middle comes to a peak with a thinning of flavors, with tropical fruitiness of pineapple, mango, and guava, with added cloy of strawberry, lactic acidity, mineral water, and lightly herbal and citric hoppiness. The end allows for the rye graininess to take full, dramatic, bittering effect, while the hop profile deepens and bitters into a more earthy and citric bite. This is otherwise accompanied by honey, biscuity warmth, warmed milk, gravel, light phenolic plastics, and gentle booziness. The aftertaste breathes of bitter, herbal, and earthy hop wash, light boozy burn, chalk, dried granular baking yeastiness, dried herbal blend, tannic unsweetened teas, amber, rye, and raw caramel graininess, lemon wedges, and fruitiness, of peaches, pears, mangos, and red apples. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is lighter. Slurp and smack are light but wetly satisfying, while cream and froth are lesser. The mouth is lightly coated and crinkled under a quickly drying tannic astringency, with gentle puck to the lips and face. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks decently.

Overall, the best thing about this beer is its nose. We actually felt that the whole concept behind this beer, of throwing a single hop varietal, and one so robust as the mosaic, over a dirty rye beer, was excitingly unique in and of itself. Very cool. The nose shows this off the best, with big fruity hoppiness and general depth of grain. The taste, on the other hand, doesn’t stand up to this, or do as good a job of exemplifying the idea behind this brew. The grain is a touch overpowering and warming, with too much cloy spread through the middle to box out the inherently sticky niceties of the hops. That said, the flavoring is all there, but just thins a bit too much. This is not helped along by the thickness and chewiness of feel, thanks to the grain, as this unbalanced form is pounded home, rather than left to simply float by. While we were hoping a big hoppy balance would elevate the rye beer to the next level, we were a bit disappointed here, and feel the hops could have used a little more strength in their corner.

i adore this beer, wonderful use of the rye, as well as a little something special with mosaic, which are now extremely in vogue. instead of just building an ipa for this hop, terrapin has gone above and beyond, and made an interesting and successful grain bill to match it, the rye is just the right addition. mosaic hops are so soft and subtle, fruity without some of the usual attendant bitterness, so the addition of rye to the mash adds some punch and kick that might be lacking otherwise. the result is a sturdy malt driven beer with a gorgeous and now familiar mosaic hop finish, in all of its tropical fruit and summery glory. this is beach beer for beer geeks, it just takes me to the ocean somehow, and i love that. still a big beer, i mean, full body and a long hoppy finish, robustly composed, but still takes me there. good carbonation level on it, layers of well integrated flavor, a nice marriage of a sometimes difficult grain, and a unique and vibrant hop. this is exceptional beer that i would love to be able to buy here in denver.

Nice looking beer with a good nose. Flavor profile really bursts through as it warms. Nice hoppy tones with a slightly almost sweet thing going on as well. Nice balance. I think it may come down to preference for the style. If you want smooth and easy to drink, you'll love this one. If you want more of a punch to the mouth, not so much.
