The legendary hop-hunter Krunkles turns up yet again, back from a tour of the Orient. His mission this time is to get experimental; his unbounded travels have earned him an honorary doctorate (“Doctor of what?”, you may ask? This would be a question to which only Krunkles knows the answer…) and he’s sequestered himself in the lab perfecting a never-before-seen formula for his beloved IPA.
Dr. Krunkles White Farmhouse IPA reaches new heights in complexity and flavor by combining the malt and spices of a Belgian Witbier, the yeast of a Farmhouse Ale, and the hoppy goodness of an American IPA. Krunkles’ twisted touch is a dash of white peppercorn followed by wood aging on white ash.

Remarkably dry and drinkable, this inquisitive ale blends the worlds of American IPA and yeast-forward Saison for highly "belgo-bitter" tast.
Somewhat of sparkling white wine, the beer erupts with a turbulent pour. As the ale settles a bit, its body is light golden-orange with slight haze. Its frothy and airy white head billows to the top, fueled by the racing carbonation beneath. Semi-stern retention lasts most of the session and intermittently laces the glass.
Its bright grapefruit sings the praises of Pacific Northwest hops in its sharp and acidic scent. And those hops are backed by the light ale fruitiness of lemon, apple, pear and orange. All that fruit is met with equal intensity of yeast spices in white pepper, black pepper, light coriander, alligator pepper and a kiss of earthy cumin. The fruit and spice balance is supported by a thin springboard of dry honey and water cracker maltiness.
Lightly sweet on the tongue, the ale's dry sweetness is of dry bread and cracker with hints of hay and straw. Its middle palate introduces the fruit and spice blend that's pleasantly acidic with citrus and orchard varieties. Its earthy spiciness becomes peppery and grassy as the hoppy finish takes hold. That allows for a dry and dominant citrus pith-type bitterness that lingers in the throat. A light detergent-like character joins in with light distraction to its aftertaste.
Medium-light in body, the beer's zesty effervescence springs from the tongue and pushes the beer into a fleeting finish. Playfully acidic, its nearly wine-like vinous texture invites a grass-derived astringency to accompany its sharp pang of bitterness to close the session.
Dr. Krunkles really jam packs a lot of variance into such a dry and earthy taste. But it gets a bit muddled as the citrus should be "plumper" and its grassy taste should be softly more herbal, but its dry spiciness its his saving grace.

Chemical smell and taste. Over carbonated. I love terrapin, but this is not their best.

Funky, clean with a slight cheese aftertaste. Interesting but solid beer. Cool experiment

Undated bottle at 40 degrees into a snifter
Aroma of pine and spice
Head average (4 cm), white, frothy, rapidly diminishing to 4 mm ring and 1 mm layer
Lacing poor – half dozen various size islands of tiny to medium bubbles
Body light yellow, cloudy
Flavor begins with a blast of pepper and hops, slowly fades to yeast phenolics; no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, watery, aggressive carbonation
Appearance 3, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.5, Palate 2.75, Overall 3.5625. Final weighted score: 3.9625.
This is a very good entry in the Terrapin Side Project series with the only real flaw for me being the over-aggressive carbonation – kind of like chewing an Alka-Seltzer tablet. The flavors of pine and white pepper balance the yeast phenolics nicely producing a pretty good drink once the carbonation dies. This is one I’d like to see become permanent.
