Ohio's Belgian beer makers steps deeper into the farmhouse culture with a rustic, fruity, spicy and effervescent taste that perfectly captures the essence of the southern Belgian and northern French countryside.
Rockmill's saison is a bright golden hue, laced with mild unfiltered haze. The first whiff is earthy with peppers, straw and damp hay but with a simmering citrus, orchard fruitiness underneath. Its light candied taste is pilsner-sweet and sprinkled with a powdered sugar character.
Its bubbly effervescence lightens its body and dissolves the sweetness over the course of the middle palate. While the estery taste of dried lemon, orange and apple are prominent, its the spice character that pulls forth to offer up fresh-cracked peppercorn, cumin, lemongrass and dill.
With a stern bitterness to rise in finish, the ale lifts from the palate effortlessly as its champagne character pops off the tongue. All contributes to its dry and peppery finish with faint alcohol warmth. Its medium-light body trails with fresh-cut grass, lemon pepper and sassafras.

A: This one pours an attractive apricot color. There is very little head with an aggressive pour, which dissipates into a small white rim. Much less head than typical saison.
S: A lemony funky aggressive nose. Lemon is totally dominant. Little sourness.
T: Funky, lemon, and a little weird. It is unbalanced with the lemon citrus totally in the forefront. It is dry and slightly sour
MF: light and effervescent.
O: I cannot believe this is $9 for a 375ml, when Dupont is in the $5 range. It basically tastes like a pale ale with lemon concentrate.

Served from a 750ml bottle into a Mason jar.
A: The first thing I notice about this beer is the massive, thick head; creamy, almost like watching yeast go crazy in a starter. Color is an orange, apricot orange maybe?
S: Fruity, yeasty
T: This beer has a funkiness I didn't expect in a saison - sour and a citrusy fruitiness
M: Medium-high carbonation, thin body
O: This is miles away from what I thought a saison should be - that either makes it way more authentic than any I've had or off in left field. I can't really get past the sourness of this one.

Appearance - This saison is a lot darker than I am used to seeing. I generally expect saisons to be straw yellow. The sediment looked a little more like little white rocks at the bottom of the glass.
Smell - The funk of the saison has a little sweetness that brings pineapple to mind. There is something akin to bread and caramel in the aroma as well.
Taste - The funk of a sasion begins the taste, but immediately goes in a different direction. Notes of pineapple, bread, and sour fruits hit various points of the tongue. The sourness lingers in the aftertaste creating a dry impression on the roof of the mouth.
Mouthfeel - The stickiness of the mouthfeel is quite real with allowing a dry aftertaste to linger on the roof of the mouth. Immediately, I find myself thirsty for more. I really enjoyed the finish.
Overall - This saison strays from the norm in the style, which is perhaps why I like it. It is not just another funky saison, but has some interesting nuances.

A: deep cloudy amber with a finger of ivory foam, drank fairly clean down the glass
S: citrus with herbal accents, soft orchard fruits, something drying and woodsy
T: sweet spiced orchard fruit, wet grains and drying wood; distant dank funk, forward dark citrus pith
M: medium-bodied, smooth and fuzzy at the same times; soft with a tingle of spice and herb
O: I'm elevating the ranking on this saison - this was the result of some precision craftsmanship, and while my review may not be gushing with descriptors, this is worth your while. It's pricey ($10-15?) but for a saison fan or any experienced BA, I gotta believe its worth the buy. Top-notch stuff.

Been wanting to try stuff from Rockmill for a few years now. And now I have 5 beers out of their lineup. I'm starting with this one.
Kind of an unusually dark color on it. An amber hue with a brown kind of edge on it. Mild sweet flavor on the profile. Just a touch of dark fruit. I was hoping this brewery would have their act together, and I'm very glad that seems to be the case. I'm looking forward to other beers from this brewery.
