Apperance: unfiltered bronze/murky yellow with a 2 inch rolling soft white head

Nose: Candy sugar, bubblegum, whisky and oak

Taste: Whiskey and oak, slightly malty with a slight taste of smoke

Mouth: Very bubbly and forward, dancing on the palate.

Overall: This is very well done, I would have liked to have seen a bit less carbonation and a bit more in the nose but other than that it was excellent.

2017 vintage. Poured from a cork'n'cage 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Dark golden brown pour... cloudy mud. No head. No lacing.

S: Oak and whiskey with a bit of fruit and acidity.

T.F: Semi-sweet... boozy, with whiskey and oak. Not a lot of tripel yeast/fruit character... soapy. Caramel and a little spice. Nearly flat... sticky and medium bodied.

O: Rather unpleasant. They got the barrel flavor but not much else. Mouthfeel completely 'off' for the style. A bad bottle or the worst barrel aged tripel I've ever had. Or perhaps both.

Reviewed from (very) long-standing notes. Corked and caged 750mL bottle, poured into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass. 2013 vintage, consumed 9/1/17. We had great difficulty removing the cork - it was fragile and crumbled. I'm not certain how that portends.

A: Hazy golden copper, with a thin white head that disappears but it has lots of visible carbonation running up the sides.

S: Whiskey and oak, biscuit malts and light citric acids. Some dark spiciness – I'm not sure if this is from the yeast or the whiskey – and some fruity yeast esters. Complex but not overly exciting here.

T: Whiskey and Belgian fruity esters (apple, pear, lighter banana). Sweet biscuity malts, though oddly (but happily for my personal preferences) minimal if any pilsner malt character. Light vanilla from the oak, and there is a mild fruity and citric tart dryness here – not infected, but just a bit of wild flora at work to add just a bit of funk. Vinous and woody tannins, and more sweet fleshy fruit in the hang with residual whiskey flavor.

M: The body is on the heavy side for a tripel. The alcohol presence seems quite well-integrated for a barrel-aged beer. Average carbonation sensation.

O: Not a bad beer. But one that just seems like individual flavors without meshing together, and it doesn't end up being particularly memorable. You could do worse if you were determined to drink a barrel-aged tripel, but I won’t be trying this again in all likelihood. As it warms, it doesn't get any better - it stays very whiskey-heavy, and I find it difficult to finish the bottle. Scores given are for style; my personal preference is lower (estimated closer to 3.25/5).

A - Soft hazy orange pour, almost opaque.
S - Yeasty booze, whisky barrel really comes through
T - Somewhat chewy tripel, kind of reminds me of a barleywine. The barrel aging does make it unique, but I just don't think this particular one had enough time to mellow/blend. The flavors seemed a little unbalanced.
M - Nice medium body with a little booze bite. Good carbonation.
O - I'm glad I tried this one, it's not something I'd try everyday. Good for a cold and rainy afternoon. I'll drink it again but not seek it out.
