I've been waiting a long time to review this one!

It's finally open, and I've been there a couple of times a week ever since. It's definitely towards the higher end of my top 5 must-see beer destinations in Portland.

If I have to dock this place some points anywhere, it's probably due to the atmosphere. It's not bad, it's just not great either. When the sun is out and the weather is warm, having the overhead doors opened up to the old loading dock up front really helps. The good points inside are the creative use of barrels behind the bar - either barrel fronts that contain the taps for the keg beers, or actual barrels that are sticking through holes in the cooler wall that allow you to drink barrel aged beers directly from the oak they've matured in. They also have a few barrels that have been turned into tables, which helps bring the theme out from behind the bar; making it part of the customer experience. After that, the design begins to falter. When I think "barrel house", I think rustic and cave-like; a dark comfortable place to drink some special brews and blends. This place seems like it takes more design cues from a high school gymnasium than anything else. Long picnic style tables that remind you of basketball bleachers, bright hanging halogen lights, lots of blonde finished wood all over... where's the scoreboard?

That was a lot of description, but it's really the least important aspect in this case, so don't let it dissuade you.

The quality here is literally world class. Where else can you go and get at least 12 unique, super high quality sour beers on tap at one time? Bourbonic Plague, Vlad the Imp Aler, Beck Berry, Noyeaux, Sang Noir, etc... all on tap at the same time?!? Count me in.

Service is great. I'll give a big shout-out to the bar manager, Cody, who is great behind the bar, really friendly, super knowledgeable, and always glad to talk about the bar and beers if he has the time.

Selection and quality here are the same. I'll say it again, 12 sour beers on tap at a time, plus at least 4 non-sour options to try on top of those. The fresh hop porter that's on right now is a great option, and a deal in an imperial pint.

Food here is OK. I love the ham and Gruyere sandwich, the meatloaf was passable, but I wouldn't order it again. The bacon tapenade sounded great, but it was way too salty to finish the time I ordered it. There's more I'd like to try. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich sounds great.

The value here is good for what you get. It's not cheap by Portland standards, but these aren't cheap beers, and I wouldn't expect them to cost any less.

The beer is obviously amazing, and there's lots of things on tap that you don't see bottled. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful, as well as engaging and fun (especially Grant). The atmosphere was very relaxed and the food was spectacular (beer cheese soup and pulled pork sandwich). The pickled vegetables that came with the sandwich were particularly noteworthy as was the sour beer barbecue sauce. I'd say that the best part is that all of the beers are available in reasonably priced samples (2-3 dollars). I was able to have 7 samples with dinner and still be fine to drive back to the hotel, with a pit stop at Belmont Station. I'm so glad that work brought me out for the week, and I might go back every single day.

Comfortable environment with plenty of inside and outside seating and some of the best sours you'll ever have. Located on the east side of the Willamette and easy to get to from downtown via public transportation or on foot, depending on where you are. Once there, you're within walking distance to a number of other great places including Hair of the Dog and Beer Mongers. A quick bus ride can get you to Belmont Station. The service is very good, the staff knowledgeable, although the two folks I dealt with showed little to no enthusiasm and were very subdued (maybe it's a Portland thing). Needless to say, the beers were stellar and plenty of their non-standard beers were offered in bottles (such as vintage Vlad and Bourbonic Plague). Didn't try the food, but wished I had, as there were a number of interesting offerings. Definitely worth a repeat visit.

This was a must stop for me while we were on our Pacific NW trip and it did not disappoint.

The setting itself is perfect. Personally, I love the outdoor seating mixed with open air indoor seating . Warning, if it is hot out (which it was) it is even hotter inside. Obviously with open air there is no conditioning. It is a pretty basic looking room, not much on the walls, but they have lots of variety on tap. They even have two "From the barrel" beers that are tapped right from a barrel and pour directly barrel to glass. A unique feature. They do full pours and tasters/samples, which is nice for some of their super tart beers. The service is good, attentive.

Overall, if you haven't been, I would definitely recommend it.
