A-Cascade is located in a slightly gritty area of Portland (not far from downtown). I say gritty, but the place is not a dive by any stretch. There is a decent-sized patio out front that looks on to the parking lot. Inside it is a bit commercial feeling with standard-issue "micro-brewery" decor like barrel tables and the like. The bar is medium-sized, maybe a dozen or 15 stools, and there are a few booths and tables as well. Friendly, but not inspiring or unique. It was pretty quiet on the rainy Tuesday night I visited.

Q-The Cascade beers I tried were all pretty amazing and my previous (limited) experience with Cascade has also been great, so quality ranks high. I tried Sang Noir, Apricot Ale, a fresh-from-the-barrel Cherry Bourbonic Plague, and some of their mulled, spiced hot ale, Glueh Kriek. All were great...even the Glueh Kriek.

Ser-The service was prompt, friendly, and beers were poured with care. I engaged in a bit of chit-chat, but did not get into lengthy conversations with any of the employees about beer. It mostly seemed like they know what they were talking about.

Sel-The beers on tap, as well as those in the bottle are all Cascade, but that isn't a problem because there is a lot of Cascade to choose from. I counted 17 beers on tap (half were sour, half were not sour) and ten bottles available for take away. Plus the hot mulled ale. Not bad at all.

F-I had a cheese plate that was a little short on the cheese, but what cheese there was went well with the sour beers I was drinking. The other food looked pretty good, but I didn't try any. Also, regarding the cheese plate...kiwi fruit and dill pickles on the same plate?

V-The sours are mostly reasonably priced, but sours are expensive. Also, the tasters were on the small side for the price. Not a rip-off, but not cheap, either.

O-Well worth the visit and its near Hair of the Dog and the Green Dragon, so if sours aren't your thing, you're close to other good spots. (1,963 characters)

Visited here with my wife and kids. My wife loves sours, and this is now by far her favorite place in Portland.

We had a good experience. Not the greatest place for chaotic kids, but we stuck it out anyway. Just too many alluring beers to walk away.

It's not cheap. But, it's sours, at a bar, so this is to be expected. Service was good. Our waitress was nice, knowledgeable, and fairly attentive.

Excellent place to visit. If you like sours and you're in Portland, you're a fool to miss this place. (513 characters)

This is a must visit in PDX, espeically if you are a sour lover (which I am admittedly, not). The atmosphere is laid back and interesting, the service is great and the selection is fantastic. Would definitely go back on a future visit. (237 characters)

It's Cascade - so you know it's good. Massive selection of Cascade brews I'd never had before, had 8 samples ($2-$3 a pop). We were in town for the Oregon Brewer's Festival - which was hosted by Cascade, they did a great job of it. The bartenders really know their shit - I'm a brewer of about twenty years and they answered all of my questions smartly. The food was really good too. Great spot - wish this NC boy lived closer. (427 characters)

THE best beer cheese soup I've ever had! Also the beer selection is ridiculous! If you live in Portland, I am jealous that you can go here every day! (149 characters)

Really cool laid back vibe, was never crowded and the pricing is reasonable considering the bottles are usually pretty high priced. The selection seems never ending and the live barrels are a cool to sample while your there. A must stop while your in Portland, especially if your a fan of sours. (297 characters)

On a rainy Monday in Portland while on vacation we wandered down Belmont a few blocks and came upon Cascade, a brewery I've heard much about in my sour/wild beer reading and travels.

Not surprisingly it was slow on this day, only a few people where drinking beer at noon, so we grabbed one of the re-fabricated barrel tables. The menu was extensive with fruited sours (Apricot, cherry, elderberry and more) there were two "live" barrels tapped (as they do every Tuesday we learned) one a Apple pie sounding beer with cinnamon the other more akin to a Kriek.

Each beer had the option for a 2oz pour or and 8oz (seemingly small if I compare to Belgium but the scale is likely smaller). It took about 10 minutes for the bartender to bring over our 4x 2oz pours, but attributed to it with a buggy draft line, pun intended.

No Food would be had that day, and I don't recall if they had the option. By the end we each sampled 4 different varieties, each had one commonality I tend to not overlook as easily as most - the aftertaste, it was almost non-existent. The beers were excellent in the start, soft sourness no abrasive harshness good bread character and aroma with some soft oak, but then nothing it just goes away. Its hard for me to judge a beer to harshly simply on that trait but it seems relevant.

Overall Cascade had a good vibe, the service was a little slow at that time, but understandable. I would have liked to have seen the barrel taping the following day, but there's always next time. We left with a couple bottles to take home. (1,555 characters)
