A-Cascade is located in a slightly gritty area of Portland (not far from downtown). I say gritty, but the place is not a dive by any stretch. There is a decent-sized patio out front that looks on to the parking lot. Inside it is a bit commercial feeling with standard-issue "micro-brewery" decor like barrel tables and the like. The bar is medium-sized, maybe a dozen or 15 stools, and there are a few booths and tables as well. Friendly, but not inspiring or unique. It was pretty quiet on the rainy Tuesday night I visited.

Q-The Cascade beers I tried were all pretty amazing and my previous (limited) experience with Cascade has also been great, so quality ranks high. I tried Sang Noir, Apricot Ale, a fresh-from-the-barrel Cherry Bourbonic Plague, and some of their mulled, spiced hot ale, Glueh Kriek. All were great...even the Glueh Kriek.

Ser-The service was prompt, friendly, and beers were poured with care. I engaged in a bit of chit-chat, but did not get into lengthy conversations with any of the employees about beer. It mostly seemed like they know what they were talking about.

Sel-The beers on tap, as well as those in the bottle are all Cascade, but that isn't a problem because there is a lot of Cascade to choose from. I counted 17 beers on tap (half were sour, half were not sour) and ten bottles available for take away. Plus the hot mulled ale. Not bad at all.

F-I had a cheese plate that was a little short on the cheese, but what cheese there was went well with the sour beers I was drinking. The other food looked pretty good, but I didn't try any. Also, regarding the cheese plate...kiwi fruit and dill pickles on the same plate?

V-The sours are mostly reasonably priced, but sours are expensive. Also, the tasters were on the small side for the price. Not a rip-off, but not cheap, either.

O-Well worth the visit and its near Hair of the Dog and the Green Dragon, so if sours aren't your thing, you're close to other good spots.

Wow. The sour pilgrimage is complete. I was amazed at the offerings on tap. Even more amazing was the friendly servers. My party sat at the bar and the two guys working were more than amazing, and found options for even the non-beer drinkers--without any of the snark I've come to expect. Why settle for beer snobbery when there's other options? These guys made the night. Bravo.

For a Sunday afternoon, this place was pretty populated. The staff is very proud of its sour collection and are very eager to explain each selection ordered. We didn't get any food, so I can't say whether the snacks were good or not. But the sours were exceptional. I just missed the Vlad The Imp-Aler, but was pleasantly surprised with a Bourbonic Plague. Cascade is more a place for the sour connoisseur, like a fine wine establishment; not rowdy, but proper, like a prized landmark should be. A must-see when in Portland.

Very nice selection of sours, live from the barrel sours, traditional beers (IPA, coffee stout) and bottles. Our server (Sarah Jo) was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting beers for the group (some that have never tried sours before) and bottles for takeaway. We only ordered snacks for food (charcuterie, humus, and bar snack mix) and they were decent but nothing outstanding. The most surprising beer was actually not a sour but the Oblique B&W Coffee Stout! Having the availability of tasters is nice so you're not committed to a whole pint of any given beer and can sample a good variety. Vibe is decent but nothing amazing.

House of Sours! Their sours are Lactobacillus heavy, which I like. Their base sours take fruiting very well. All their sour beers are exceptional. A must stop when in Portland.

I've been here a few times and for the most part they are very consistent. The beer selection will always be excellent. A wide variety of great sours, some cool vintages of older beers and some standard IPAs and stouts they've started offering recently. Food is equally solid and pairs nicely with the high ABV and intense flavors Cascade offers. I think the service and vibe can be lacking at times. It's just not an overly exciting places. Great beer and a great place to drink some solid beers, but not a place you'd go to with the intention of staying that long. Nice outdoor patio area in the summertime though!

On a recent trip to Portland I was pleased to finally visit the Cascade barrel house, having been stymied in this effort during my previous trip. I am glad to say I was not disappointed at all; I got to try some great beers including one that is available at the taproom only (Yay! Rare Cascade!) and they were all delicious. The bar staff were knowledgeable about the beer, and the place seemed to be full of other beer geeks (this may be a plus or a minus for you). I am absolutely going return here on my next visit to Portland.

Ok, when I die I want my ashes to be scattered here. Visited recently on a trip to Portland from Sacramento where I had heard of Cascade sours but never tried any (very expensive by the bottle in Sacramento ($30+). We shared a couple of sampler trays and were blown away by most of the beers. Loved the pricing of the bottles and availability of aged ones too. Brought several bottles back with me. Also, high marks for the pleasant and quick service.

One of (if not) the best spot I made it to on my recent try to PDX.

Vibe is just a pretty standard looking pub, nothing special, but it was easy to find a place to park and sit inside so that's a plus.

Quality is top notch. One of the better sour makers out there, and everything I had a sample of was excellent. They also had a very good selection, upwards of 20+ beers were available.

Service was great. The guy that helped us was super helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. One of the better people I've run into working at a brewery in some time.

Would come back here in a heartbeat, outstanding.

I visited Cascade Brewing Barrel House recently on a vacation through the Pacific Northwest.

V: I loved the vibe of this place with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Ser: Service was sold but nothing special to speak of during my visit.

Sel: Great selection of their standards, limited releases and a few vintage offerings.

Overall, a great place to visit in Portland and a classic. if you like sours, you have to visit Cascade when in Portland.
