The vibe here is really the least impressive or important aspect of the experience, not uncomfortable, but utilitarian (the through wall live barrels they tap are pretty cool though). The sour beers range from good to excellent and it's really nice to be able to taste some of them without dropping $30 for a whole bottle. Service was good, but we were sitting at the bar so it should be. Selection is really quite good, lots of different sours on tap, vintage kegs and bottles, and two live sour casks tapped at the bar. The fod is limited but the sandwiches are very good. Overall, it is one of the few absolute musts in Portland.

Great place to taste sours, great atmosphere, and the food is just as good as the beer!

The tasters are 3 ounces, which is fine for these type of beers. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't have any service problems (like a few others have reported), although we did see less of our server as the place got full, but that's to be expected.

We weren't surprised at how good the beer was. This was our first visit to the brewery, but we've had the beer other places. But the food was excellent as well, much the best that we've had at any bar, brewpub, taproom, or beer geek place.

Prices are pretty reasonable, considering the quality of the beer and the quality of the food.

Staff was attentive and took the time to explain the variety of beers on tap. Not an extensive list of food, but we came to just drink anyways.

They had at least 15 sours on tap, another ~8 bottles, and ~5 stout/IPA/pales on tap. The service was outstanding at the bar. The 4oz (or 3?) tasters are perfect for sours and given their high ABV. We had some soup, it was good. This place is a must see and drink.

Everything about the beers was amazing....the staff on the other hand was atrocious. I wanted to go back while we were there but the service was so unfriendly we took our business else where. Which is always disappointing when the staff just make the experience not worth coming back.

Great beer, great selection of draft beer and bottles. Service was ok, we were there when it was slow, so I expected a bit more attention and friendliness. Fun experience and I would return.

I have been to about 25 different breweries and hands down Cascade was the best, great selection, great service and awesome beer.

The beer is obviously amazing, and there's lots of things on tap that you don't see bottled. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful, as well as engaging and fun (especially Grant). The atmosphere was very relaxed and the food was spectacular (beer cheese soup and pulled pork sandwich). The pickled vegetables that came with the sandwich were particularly noteworthy as was the sour beer barbecue sauce. I'd say that the best part is that all of the beers are available in reasonably priced samples (2-3 dollars). I was able to have 7 samples with dinner and still be fine to drive back to the hotel, with a pit stop at Belmont Station. I'm so glad that work brought me out for the week, and I might go back every single day.

Comfortable environment with plenty of inside and outside seating and some of the best sours you'll ever have. Located on the east side of the Willamette and easy to get to from downtown via public transportation or on foot, depending on where you are. Once there, you're within walking distance to a number of other great places including Hair of the Dog and Beer Mongers. A quick bus ride can get you to Belmont Station. The service is very good, the staff knowledgeable, although the two folks I dealt with showed little to no enthusiasm and were very subdued (maybe it's a Portland thing). Needless to say, the beers were stellar and plenty of their non-standard beers were offered in bottles (such as vintage Vlad and Bourbonic Plague). Didn't try the food, but wished I had, as there were a number of interesting offerings. Definitely worth a repeat visit.

This was a must stop for me while we were on our Pacific NW trip and it did not disappoint.

The setting itself is perfect. Personally, I love the outdoor seating mixed with open air indoor seating . Warning, if it is hot out (which it was) it is even hotter inside. Obviously with open air there is no conditioning. It is a pretty basic looking room, not much on the walls, but they have lots of variety on tap. They even have two "From the barrel" beers that are tapped right from a barrel and pour directly barrel to glass. A unique feature. They do full pours and tasters/samples, which is nice for some of their super tart beers. The service is good, attentive.

Overall, if you haven't been, I would definitely recommend it.

This was stop #22 for my wife and I on a 21-day pub-crawl from Michigan to N. CA and OR. We stopped here on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy their beers. Before stopping here we were not very experienced in drinking sours (some non-sours are also available), so this was a unique learning experience. And learn we did. It was pleasurable.

The brewery is located along a busy street that appears to be mostly light industrial businesses, and the taproom is a partitioned area of the building. A large overhead door was open, and a number of picnic tables with umbrellas were situated in front of the building so as to enjoy the fine weather on this day (which we did).

We ordered samples of 8 of the 19 beers that were available that day, and without thinking, we ended up having three beers that we had already tasted at Raccoon Lodge. But we did have a mixture of sours with the non-sours, and we enjoyed every sip of them. The flavor combinations in the sours were astounding – who would have thought that a mixture of honey, ginger and lime would be so good? I can’t write in this review that these beers were made to style because I don’t know how to gauge that when evaluating sours, but if tastiness has anything to do with it, then the brewer is right on with these beers.

The outdoor surroundings on a nice day and to be able to drink these beers for a wonderful learning experience gave us great memories so that we’d go back to this brewery in a heartbeat when we’re in the Portland area again.

This is a dreamers spot for sour beer lovers.

Cascade has to be the king of pnw for sour beers. Their projects are always on point and they do a fantastic job with their delivery.

The barrel house may be very packed but you get to do tasters for their brews. There was PLENTY to select from. The server was extremely knowledgeable of each of the brews and quick to serve as well.

The brew was fantastic and the setup was nice.

I think you add food to joint and it's perfect, i was so hungry while i was there i sorta cut my experience a little shorter than i'd live to have. Overall awesome… bottles to go are a bit pricey though.

Good atmosphere. Brew pub with tons of outdoor seating.
Great selection of beers on tap. Loved the special sour tap list they had that included some exciting new creations.

Enjoyed some simple appetizers and they were great.
Really wish I could get a growler of the special, limited tap beers but I understand why they don't allow it, even though I want it.

A-Cascade is located in a slightly gritty area of Portland (not far from downtown). I say gritty, but the place is not a dive by any stretch. There is a decent-sized patio out front that looks on to the parking lot. Inside it is a bit commercial feeling with standard-issue "micro-brewery" decor like barrel tables and the like. The bar is medium-sized, maybe a dozen or 15 stools, and there are a few booths and tables as well. Friendly, but not inspiring or unique. It was pretty quiet on the rainy Tuesday night I visited.

Q-The Cascade beers I tried were all pretty amazing and my previous (limited) experience with Cascade has also been great, so quality ranks high. I tried Sang Noir, Apricot Ale, a fresh-from-the-barrel Cherry Bourbonic Plague, and some of their mulled, spiced hot ale, Glueh Kriek. All were great...even the Glueh Kriek.

Ser-The service was prompt, friendly, and beers were poured with care. I engaged in a bit of chit-chat, but did not get into lengthy conversations with any of the employees about beer. It mostly seemed like they know what they were talking about.

Sel-The beers on tap, as well as those in the bottle are all Cascade, but that isn't a problem because there is a lot of Cascade to choose from. I counted 17 beers on tap (half were sour, half were not sour) and ten bottles available for take away. Plus the hot mulled ale. Not bad at all.

F-I had a cheese plate that was a little short on the cheese, but what cheese there was went well with the sour beers I was drinking. The other food looked pretty good, but I didn't try any. Also, regarding the cheese plate...kiwi fruit and dill pickles on the same plate?

V-The sours are mostly reasonably priced, but sours are expensive. Also, the tasters were on the small side for the price. Not a rip-off, but not cheap, either.

O-Well worth the visit and its near Hair of the Dog and the Green Dragon, so if sours aren't your thing, you're close to other good spots.

A lot has already been said about this spot, so I won't pile on too much, I just want to give it an endorsement. As a Portland local, I think Cascade Barrel House is one of the best places in a town full of some great places. If you enjoy sour beers, chances are Cascade will have something in their vast selection that will become an all time favorite. If you don't enjoy sour beers (and you should at least try a few if this is the case, their bartenders are aces and might surprise you with something you never knew you'd like) they do brew a small selection of non-sour beers. I had a bourbon barrel aged ale here once a couple of years ago that set the standard for this type. Unfortunately, it was a one-off, and that is often the case at Cascade. Although I sometimes feel a little sad about this when I know I'll never have that beer again, I think it's really a nice thing for locals, it keeps us on our toes around here.
The service is smart, and efficient which is high praise for Portland. The atmosphere, in the summer with the doors open, this one of the nicest spots in town. The rest of the year it is alright too, I have no complaints. Oh and the food, the food is next level. It is slightly more expensive than the fare at some other Southeast locales (but waaayyy cheaper than a mediocre burger at some of the more famous brewpubs... you know who you are) but that's because it's not cooked in a truck. I mean, I love me some foodtrucks as much as the next guy, but seriously, there are just some things better prepared in a kitchen with walls-- like quail eggs (which they often serve here). GO HERE BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME. You're welcome in advance.

We went because my wife loves sours. I am a fan, to a degree, so we had to check this place out. We saw sour upon sour when we arrived.

We weren't sure where to start. We asked the bartender, and got started. I think we tried 80% of the beer on tap, even though we were planning on taking it easy that night..the beers were just that good, and we had great conversations with the bartenders.

Great time. Great bartenders (Greg and Tyler, I believe)! GREAT sours! Wish we had a place like this in WI...New Glarus catching up.

All of their beers are sour and barrel aged. It's pretty unreal how good all of their beer is. They have a warehouse behind the taproom that looks like a port wine aging cave, and it smells like happiness. If you visit on Tuesday night, they have "Tap it Tuesday" where they tap a barrel behind the bar. It has been known to spray, so they cover everything in plastic.

I've had this spot on the list for awhile, and it did not disappoint. Was on a biz trip and only had time to visit one brewery, so this is the spot I chose.

Was able to try just about every sour they had on tap (Raspberry Wheat, The Vine, Apricot, Noyaux, Blueberry, Vlad the Imp-Aler, Kriek, Manhattan NW, etc). They also had two live barrels - one of which was a Fruit Loops Sour (which was quite tasty). I was really impressed by how many of their sours they actually had on tap at one time. They also had Cinnamon Apple, and several very impressive/surprising blender tap specials (Chocolate Bourbonic Plague was pretty outstanding).

I can't wait to head back - their food was also surprisingly good (as it's often an area that's overlooked at breweries...not the case here).

The atmosphere was great - big garage bay doors to let in natural light (as the sun was actually out this day).

Prices were also very reasonable...I recommend buying a bunch of the beers and sending them home if you're not local - you can buy limited bottles online, but they have many, many more available at the actual barrel house.

Stopped in for a quick visit here, tried two 2-sour samplers which were outstanding. Had to run to catch a flight, but before I left another employee asked if I had tried the Glueh Kriek. I told him no, that I was just coming through on my one day in Portland, so he grabbed me a glass of it for free. Did not try the food, so I can't vouch for that. Portland is obviously stacked with breweries, but if you're a fan of sours, this place is a must visit. Highly recommended.

Bent, past tense, and a hell of a ride in, it was. Now navigated in nineish on a Thursday, no Wednesday (I have no perception of time or space at this point), Belmont, and that must be it there. I think it’s safe to say we’re going to do some time here before heading out to Jon’s, I mean, we’re already going to take some shit for missing dinner; might as well get our sour on…

Parked past and give Phil a few steps to get his smoke on. Brick front building with some yellow baby lighting strung. Up & in, through a garage door; a most common theme in the Pac NW, it seems. And settled in at the bar to the rear; straight, marbled laminate topped with a wood lip, panel base, shiny kick plate, & piping foot rail. Seating for 10 on stainless steel stools, squozen in tightly, and then a shorty sideways end piece seating another ‘3 Davo’ (yes, that’s now an accepted standard unit of measure).

Barback is stainless steel drainage below 3 barrel ends to both sides of center on a split green backing. There are handles everywhere, and it’s um, involved, to tell what’s what and where. To the left side, 2 barrel ends with a single tap each, and a 3rd with 4 taps, and then 2 taps in between each barrel extending from the wall (I think that’s 8); and then the 3 barrel ends to the right hold 4 handles each, and then there are 2 handles in between each of those extending from the wall (so, another 16), I think there’s space for 24 in all. Glassware in a handful of sizes shelved below the length. 4 x 8 horizontal board above, listing draft selections & ABV’s in 2 rows, and smaller boards on the ends listing barrel selections, and bottle, growler, & grenade pricing; track spots highlighting the show.

The room itself is kind of hangerish, with rounded to the ceiling cross beam rafters. Black fabricy ceilings with wide drop lamps, cement floors, lime colored walls and panel windows up front. A few logo label pieces (The Vine & Sang Noir) for the lookin’ at, flats on 2 walls opposite and the far corner, and a swag display to the side side, as well. 5 fabric backed & green leather booths running the far wall; brewery pics mounted above, and lanterns atop. And then barrel tables across the floor in 2 rows of 5. And out front, 6 bar counter spurs on the railings 3 & 3, and nearly a dozen and a half green picnic tables down below barrel penned.

So, it looks like they’ve got 22 taps, a fairly even split between ‘things sour’ (Razberry Wheat, Summer Gose, Strawberry, Apricot, The Vine, Honey Ginger Lime, Sang Noir, 2011 Kriek, Elderberry, Barrel Aged Bruin), and ‘not’ (Portland Ale, Red Eye Rye, Cascade IPA, RyePA, Saison De La Maison, Saison Rouge, Saison Minuit, Saison Fume, Summer Solstice IPA, Summer Weizen, Oblique Coffee Porter), plus 2 live barrels (Cherry Bourbonic Plague, Bourbon Barrel Aged Fruit Blend).

A max of 2 tasters at a time for $2 each. Needless to say, we’re doing pairs due to time restraints, by which I mean, they may want to close up and go home at some point. Pairs; The Vine (white wine grapes, love) & Sang Noir, Elderberry & Strawberry, Honey Ginger Lime (strangely tasty, Phil wants to mix it with Gin, I don’t blame him) & Apricot (I very much so do dig), and the Kriek & Razberry Wheat. And then I moved to done with the (amazing) Summer Gose we had 3 nights ago in Seattle.

Revisiting 2 days later, fuck it; I’m having at the Saisons (Saison De La Maison, tropical fruit & spiciness; Saison Rogue, red saison, sweet fruitiness; Saison Minuit, black saison, chocolate, spices, sweet milk chocolate; Saison Fume, smoke gives way to bandaid phenolics, why do I have to taste them?), and now onto sours once more (Cherry Bourbonic Plague, sour cherry pie, crazy dark fruits; Barrel Aged Bruin, wood, sherry flavors, good Oud Bruin), and another Summer Gose.

All in all, Strawberry, Apricot, The Vine, Honey Ginger Lime, 2011 Kriek, Summer Gose, Barrel Aged Bruin, & Cherry Bourbonic Plague were the best of ‘em.

Board at the end of the bar listing charcuterie, cheese, hummus, soup & daily specials. I had the Italian vegetable soup with orzo, it was amazingly kickass. Phil had the cheese & fruit plate. It came with cherries, pickled things including a brussel sprout I was kind of freaked out by, and some honey he keeps going on about (best honey I’ve ever had!) I had planned on also taking in the cheese & fruit plate on the heels of the soup, but was preoccupied by sours; distracted, derailed, deceived.

And on the revisit, Janet & Ed ordered the cheese & fruit plate, so I got to try the crazy honey and fresh bell pepper hummus (excellent). And the soup is now a seafood chowder (clam, shrimp & crab). I am having a bowl.

Chill house. Lots of friendly folks all revved up for the brewer’s festival tomorrow and tomorrow; a picnic, parade, and 3 or 4 days of bad behaviors. Yeah man, sorry about dinner Jon. Good goddamn sourz things happening here.

Dined and drank at the Barrel House on 9/2/12 with my wife. Amazing tap list that night, as with most nights there. I think there was about 18 or 20 things available. Also, 4 different bottles to carry out. We did a number of sampler pours along with a few full pours of stuff. The waitress was more than helpful with our selections and prompt in bringing our drinks. The food was very affordable but also delicious and cutting edge in a simple way. The only downfall was the lack of some nice dessert items to sample with the Diesel BA stout they were pouring, but they did provide us with some dark chocolate nibs that paired nicely.

Two big thumbs up for me and from my wife who isn't a beer drinker.
