Leech lake arrives in the Cities; picked this 22 oz. bomber a couple weeks back. Split into a pair of small tulips on Christmas Eve.
Weeeellll, not quite 22 ounces. The pour is flickering red, & about 3/4 of the way through, a mucus plug shakes loose & enters the liquid already poured with a distinctive splash. Uh. Ugh. The plug breaks up into 35,632 bits of junk scattering through the beer. Think I'll let is rest & settle out a bit...nose is much better. Very peaty & roasty. More peat than I've ever experienced in a beer to date.
Loch Leech Monster has been buried in a bog for a long time. A peat bog. Seriously, tastes like burning peat, almost head-on. Roast is mingled, with the similarities making it hard to find where one begins & the other ends. Black bread, dancing raisins, touch of misplaced sour on the finish that lingers, & really tarnishes the taste. A bit flat, & heavy for a 6% ABV brew. Half a bomber, well, wish I would have sampled this previous to buying it.
Disappointed. This is not quite mediocre brew with promise. The peat aspect is really nice, but the sourness, which can't be intended, really brings it down. I hope they can dial this one in.

750ml bottle - going through old notes
This was one of the bad beers I had from them, the bottle had no carbonation and when I finally tried it on tap it was lackluster - tons of peat and way too sweet. I like my scottish ale to be cut with hops, not just straight malt. It was thick and chewy, too, no crispness

12oz aluminum bottle poured into vintage Chimay glass. Pours a rich brown color with a small tan colored head that dissipates quickly.
Smell is of toasted toffee malt, a bit of chocolate, some dark fruit and smokiness as well.
Taste is of toasted malt and smoky peat up front, both flavors remain through the palate, some bitterness comes through towards the finish. Mouthfeel is smooth, not a lot of carbonation to it.
Overall, a good Scotch Ale from northern Minnesota. The fresher you get this, the better it is.

A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a small, short lived khaki colored head that left minimal lacing.
S - It smelled earthy and spicy with malty notes.
T - Some peat, mossy and earthy flavors with a bready malt backbone.
M - It was crisp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.
O - This is a nice Scottish Ale with a fun label and story.

22 oz. bottle.
pours out a dark and murky mahoghany colour with little haead and little to no lace. muted aroma of wood, cocoa and nougat inspired malt, tart fruit and peat. taste is a mess of smoked malt, sour candy, choco/nougat maltiness with a touch of alcohol and earthy/ herbal hoppiness. some back end bitterness, but seems lost in the wash. flat mouthfeel, sparse carbonation and no body worth mentioning. poor drinkability.
overall this is a flat, sour mess of a malted beverage. obviously off and as close to a drain pour as i've had in a long time. i'll pour the rest of this down my throat to try to pick up any redeeming qualities. not recommended in this state.

Great deep amber look with a one finger head of creamy tan foam that leaves huge gobs of lacing on the glass.
A lightly peaty malt that is overshadowed by a sourness.
This is the second beer from these guys that has had a sourness to it. I am pretty sure they have an issue at the brewery that is causing infections. The taste is really dominated by a sweet and sour taste, with sour standing out more. Sad.
The feel is rather nice. Very smooth, soft and dry.
The IPA is really the only beer from these guys that I would buy again. Now with this sourness issue, I may think twice about purchasing anything from them. I love supporting local breweries, but it's hard to do when you have to dump their product down the drain after spending your money trying them out. I truly hope they can get the kinks worked out. Until then, buyer beware!

Really excited to come across this brewery, not far from our cabin. Thanks, Beer Advocate.
Had a Loch Leech on tap just the other day, right on-premise in Walker. Pours a lovely amber, seem to be some particulates floating in it. The prevailing flavors are smoke, raisin, roasted tones, malt, low hop profile. Pretty well balanced. A somewhat frothy consistency.
Very good stuff, this is a style I like and Leech Lake held its own against offerings from bigger more established breweries. Mad props to Greg and Leech Lake.
