Notes/Commercial Description:
Uncharted Belgian IPA was fermented with two different yeast strains; a Belgian Abbey style that produces a nice ester flavour profile with spicy notes and a classic West Coast India Pale Ale strain that showcases the punchy and tropical fruit flavoured Riwaka hops from New Zealand. This is a lively and dynamic 7.5% alcohol beer that is presented to you in its purest form, cloudy and unfiltered. Uncharted Belgian IPA is a very unique style of beer that is best enjoyed well chilled and served in a stemmed tulip glass.

Lighthouse just re-released this brew this week, and as a beer geek I couldn't be happier! I think their initial release was back in April of 2011, but we were forewarned that it was a single batch (unlike the Deckhand) and that it might not be an annual seasonal. It still stands as my favourite Lighthouse beer to date, and the name is just perfect, because this brew is off-the-charts good. It's a veritable triple threat; with a creamy malt body, a Belgian yeast twist, and a tropical fruit hop close. The backbone on this beer is maybe what impresses me the most. Most Belgian IPA's I've had so far tend to skimp on the body of the beer in favour of a heavier yeast and/or hop flavour. But this beer is built like a bomb shelter, with a deep foundation that is able to provide a great balance to the heavy-handed hop flavour. Typical of New Zealand Riwaka hops, we get notes of pineapple, mango and melon on the finish, as opposed to the pine and grapefruit that we NorthWesterners are used to. It's a dry finish too though, with a Belgian yeast overtone, so it creates more thirst in your mouth. Thus, before you even realize it, the first bottle is gone and it's time to crack the second :) I really hope Lighthouse continues to make batches of this beer, even if it's on a less-than-annual basis.

As a first run beer I'm looking forward to reviewing Lighthouse Belgium IPA local offering
A-poured into a chalice burnt copper/bronze with a fluffy head with lacing on the glass
S-fruity with hints of floral and spice
T-papaya and mango start followed by caramel into bitter yeast finish
MF-high carbonation and a bit too much resdue at the end
Ov-a bit too bitter for my palate , glad I gave "Uncharted" a look

cheers LampertLand

Clear, copper-bronze with an off-white head, thin retention, hints of lace.

Aroma is tropical (mango & papaya), with a light phenolic spicing. Some caramel and candied pineapple, with hints of grainy biscuit.

Papaya and mango are upfront in the flavour as well. Sultanas/golden raisins, marmalade, candied pineapple, figs, caramel, biscuit, peppery spice, balanced bitterness with a hint of alcohol warmth. Plenty of depth. Nicely done.

There's a light residual sweetness with a slightly drying alcohol finish. Bubbly Belgian-like carbonation.

Very nice blend.

Much more integrated than the Phillips offering. I liked the way the Belgian yeasts worked with the hops. Not too over the top hoppy but still a beer for the hophead with the added interest of Belgian notes. Great effort from these guys and the best of the style for BC

On tap at St Augustines in Vancouver.

A: 1/4" white head over amber liquid with excellent clarity.

S: Citrus and floral hops add to a very smell clean smell.

T: Pine citrus and floral hops up front with a malty finish.

M: Medium viscosity and high carbonation.

O: A highly drinkable hoppy Belgian.

650ml bottle from EskimoDave. Cheers!

Pours into my snifter a crystal clear burnished orange, a finger of head which leaves some spotty lacing down the glass.

Quite a tropical nose with hints of banana and other fruity yeasty esters, a light spiciness and a sticky sweetness.

Really unique character, really well integrated beer which is rare for a Belgian IPA. Yeasty esters with a decided spiciness, some tropical notes, candi sugar, a pleasant dryness with a moderately sticky caramel sweet body, hint of booze but in a pleasant way, perfect body and carb. Really struck by the balance and how the yeast works with the hop profile. A truly premium example of the style.

Uncharted IPA pours a bright copper with a nice fluffy head. The aroma is fruity with some nice grapfruity hops. The flavor is sweet and fruity up front with some nice caramel malt. The hop flavor melds nicely with the fruity esters. The beer finishes slightly dry, with fairly mild bitterness. Overall this is a really nice balanced Belgian IPA.

Nice new brew from Lighthouse. I enjoy Belgian IPAs, but I am not generally a huge fan of them. But this one is quite nice.

Typical IPA appearance with a big, fluffy white head. Spicy Abbey-style ale scent, with a decent dose of hops. Brown sugar and bread malt scent. Fruity hints.

Definite Belgian character to the taste. Spicy hops, light candi sugar. A noticeable undercurrent of PNW hops. No bitterness in the aftertaste, but rather a certain spiciness.

Nice carbonation. The alcohol is well hidden (though not particularly high for the style). Quite a nice beer.
