You wouldn't suspect it. Near the Ibis Hotel in downtown Blumenau lays a small staircase which takes you below street level and gives you access to a handful of shops. The first one you'll find is this, The Basement English Pub.
The "English" part is a misnomer, it feels more like you're in a cave. A big, very cozy environment with air conditioning, whcih is just what you'll want from the unforgiving Blumenau summer. There are dark wood accents all around, a large sized bar, and English language music playing about. It's not my idea of English style, but damn, it looks and feels soo damn cool!
Even the food menu and beers don't feel English. To be fair, there is a reasonable selection of whiskey's, but because this is BeerAdvocate, we're here to talk beer. There are 4 different options of beer on-tap, Eisenbahn's big 4 (Pilsen, Dunkel, Pale Ale, Weizenbier), and 20+ bottles from Eisenbahn, Baden Baden, Devassa, and even Nova Schin's option for a NA beer. From the beer inventory, I suspect that Grupo Schincariol played a major role deciding what The Basement carries. There is a good collection of beer glassware to match the beers, but I felt a little shortpoured with my Weizenbier.
The staff is polite, well dressed, does speak a few words of English, and are relatively quick to serve.
Prices...we'll call it a bit pricey. Many of Eisenbahn's "linha seleção" are R$10 a bottle, Baden Baden falls just short of R$20, and the food seems just a touch pricey.
If you want a cool, clean environment and don't mind having a small number of beer options, The Basement would be a good place to hit up in Blumenau.
