Poured from a bomber into a small snifter from a bottle bought at the source in Portland, 2013 edition. Rich dark almost purple color. Light head and almost no lacing. The smell is great, tart, sweet, like a red wine. The taste is spice and tart, but the sourness is pleasant and not overwhelming. A fairly mellow sour. Very nice!

750ml corked/caged bottle served in a little Georgetown sampler. Having this as a follow up to a sushi dinner.

Pours dark, almost opaque brown with a surprisingly large tan head and a moderate to high quantity of active carbonation. Smell is ginger and tart, something that makes me think a little bit of graham crackers (probably combined with the ginger I could call it ginger bread).

Taste is tart and ginger, with a dark bitterness I'm having trouble placing. It makes me think a little of plum skin.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and rich and smooth. Overall, it's a nice tasty beer.

unreal bottle of beer right here, we shared a 2013 edition. so worth the money. the label description on this is wild, and insanely ambitious. a blend of spiced old stock quads, spiced imperial reds, and spiced imperial porters, aged in bourbon and brandy oak barrels for up to three years with figs, dates, ginger, and spices. are you kidding me?!?! thats not real. to even have the capacity to pull something like that off is remarkable, and the effort and time and innovation involved in this really do show up in the beer. one of my favorite beers from our entire oregon trip right here. dark in color, looks like the porter does a lot of the coloring of this thing, a little crimson hue in the right light, lots of body and a creamy surprisingly light colored head, airy and wispy at the top. the nose here is insane, lots and lots of fresh spicy ginger, some clove, some roast, some sugar cookie, figs for sure, raisin, plum and dried berry, rich red malt, red wine and brandy, vanilla, brown sugar, belgian yeast, booze, allspice, almost like a jerk spice thing too, its enormously complex and opens up gloriously with some temperature. it tastes as good as it smells, with as much depth and nuance as i have ever seen packed into a beer. the sourness is very mature, quite acidic with lemon notes, quite funky with musty oak properties, lots of bourbon and sweet booze heat, the ginger again is very fresh, and the fresh baked element. dark malts from the porter, various ale yeasts with the cultures, wood wood wood. man, there is just so much happening here. it does a little zizzle on my tongue, lively, even effervescent in carbonation level, almost unheard of for a strong ale like this. a little sweet throughout. i can see the haters not liking the various flavor profiles, after all this thing is loaded, but you have to respect a beer like this, it really is a work of art and will inform my beer drinking for ever and ever. not sure it has an equal. even by the bottom of the bottle i was discovering new flavors, bruised peach, soy sauce, creme brulee, red sour patch kids, its all happening. as good as this was, sharing it with my brother up in oregon was the real highlight. unforgettable brew!
