2010 bottle of Cascade Kriek picked up tonight from Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting. $16.50 for a 750 ml.
I've had some rarer Cascade offerings in the past, but this is the first time trying their bread and better, Kriek. This beer is a beautiful, ruddy, rust red with a thin white head. The foam quickly subsides leaving just a loose off-white ring on the glass. The aroma solventy, spicy (like Chinese five spice), oaky and a little bit of cherry. There isn't much yeast funk in the nose, but the lactic acid dominates the taste. The acidity is the familiar round sour of Flanders Reds without the acetic, vinegary flavors that I dislike. The sweet and sour cherry flavor develop as the tartness fades. Oak tannins contribute some bitterness. There is also some juicy sweetness in the middle that is bright like the cherries which slowly falls leaving just the taste of sucking on cherry pits.
This is such a nice beer, I just wish the price wasn't so high. However, it is nice that this beer is readily available here in Philly
