2011 Project

A: Plum red in color, the beer yields no head whatsoever. Bubbles do race through what otherwise looks to be a thick body. 3.5

S: The aroma is oaky and dank, but is bolster by an assault of sweet cherries. It certainly doesn't smell like it's going to produce the spine tingling acidity as the apricot version, but it does smell good. 4

T: This kriek tastes much more sweet than I thought it would, but the beer certainly brings it. A deeply enjoyable blend of oak, sweet cherries, slight tartness, but no hit of alcohol. The crisp, clean aftertaste is full of cherries, as well. 4.5

MF: Medium body with a lower than average carbonation. The beer makes my mouth water and keep me coming back for more, seemingly having a never-ending drinkability. 4

O: Really a phenomenally blended beer that lived up to the hype. I didn't give it as high a rating because I wanted it to be more sour, but the cherries stepped up in a big way. You won't go wrong here. 4

Reviewed from notes on 8-21-10. Thanks to zoso1967 for supplying and TCGoalie and BuckyFresh for the enjoyable tasting.

A: Pours a ruby-amber with an off-white, 1.5 finger head that retains very well. The lacing is splashy and sinewy - off the charts good. This is a very pretty, enticing brew.

S: A very fruity aroma of cherries and fresh Grannie Smith apple greets my nose. There is also a fresh rose scent intermingling with the fruit aromas. A smell of fresh mint leaf also resides within this beer's premises. All in all, fresh is the word to describe this scent.

T: Wow, this is by far the sourest of the sour ales that I have tried. So very sweet and sour at the same time. I'm not getting too much cherry from the taste, but I am getting a lot of crisp, sour apple flavors. I think sour patch kids and gummy bears just met at the nexus of the universe in my mouth.

M: An absolute tart bomb on my mouth. Sour, sticky, and puckering, this might be just a little too much for my palate to handle, but it is an intriguing and exciting feel.

D: A must try due to just how sour it is, but not a beer that I will consume all that much of. Very interesting, but maybe just a tad over the line, Smokey.

08 vintage corked and caged.

pours a dark cherry color.

Aroma lets you know it's going to be awesomely sour with tart cherry and vinous oaky notes.

Quite acidic cherry with a light refreshing mouthfeel. A real treat, I could drink alot of this despite the 8%. Wish I had some, this truely is one of the best kriek's out there.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue I:

Wow, the Northwest seems to be booming with Belgian-inspired beers. This one has more head retention than expected and decent clarity in the chestnut-colored brew. Such a wonderful aroma of fresh cherries and a faint tartness with suggestions of nutmeg and baked pie crust. Think cherry pie. The unsurpassed smoothness feigns a bigger body for a second. Lots of cherry flavor up front with an ample tartness and deserving sweetness, hints of oak and bready grain are noticeable. Hops are laidback. The lactic twang is there but not overpowering at all. Very faint char from the barrel, or is it the grain?

Yet another American brewer that gets it when it comes to Belgian beer. You have to wonder what a few years of cellaring will do to this beer. Either way, its good while it lasts. Seek this one out.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. It was part of a great tasting that included seven bottled Cascade sours.

2008 vintage. The beer pours a hazy brownish-red color with a white head. The aroma is cherries, oak and vanilla. The flavor is more of the same with a large amount of cherries complimented by the characteristics of barrel aging. Low to medium tartness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

This may be Portland's answer to Alpine Chez Monieux. Pours a murky orange-red with a mahogany center. Short-lived white head with no lacing. Impressive sour cherry aroma with a graham cracker crust. Basically a cherry cobbler without the brown sugar. Sharp, bitter taste with an acidic mouthfeel. Carbonated with a dry mouthfeel. Warm cherry and sherry taste. Delicious cherry preserves follow with a bitter bite. No medicine, Nyquil, or cherry candy flavors, which is a HUGE plus. Just a simple, great lambic.

got this in a trade. thanks jpmclaug!

2009 vintage- 750ml bottle at cellar temp poured into an oversized wine glass. shared a bit with my girlfriend.

pours a murky brownish red color with a huge pinkish biege foamy soapy head. faded to a thick ring and patchy foam rather quickly. spotty lace.

big hitting aroma. lots of lactic funk, horse blanket, acidic sour cherries. woody, bourbony alcohol on the back end. very light cinnamin, spice, and bits of bready pie crust, cherry pie. some grapey sweetness as it warms.

lots of musty, horse blanket funk and lots of tart acidic cherries. a touch of oaky, bourbony wood and a slight hint of dried dark fruits and grape sweetness as it warms. bits of light spice as well.

sugary, acidic, rich mouthfeel. pretty heavy on the sourness. bright, fine carbonation. medium to heavy on the palate.

as far as drinkability goes, one bottle shouldnt be a problem, but i would recommend sharing with friends. lots of lambic qualities in this beer. heavy on the tart sour cherries, light on the oaky wood. highly recommended!

Cloudy chestnut brown with ruby edges. Thin khaki colored head and a touch of lacing left down the glass.

Biting sourness, mild oak, and lots of cherries in the aroma.

Fresh cherries, mild earth and wood component, and a biting sourness throughout. Refreshing and incredibly drinkable.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. A joy to drink.

Another delicious offering from Cascade. I can't wait until I get to try this again.
