Notes/Commercial Description:
"Brewmaster Ron Gansberg based this Apricot Ale on a Belgian Tripel, putting it through 16 months lactic fermentation and aging in French oak wine barrels. The apricots were allowed to slowly ripen before introduction into the beer; the beer then aged another four months on the fruit before bottling."

750ml bottle, 2012 bottling. Thanks for bringing this one, Rob. Poured into a Darkness goblet last night, 12/7/2013.

Pours what I would expect an apricot sour to look like- a hazy straw-yellow, bordering on the verge of orange, head being a very nice effervescence that takes some time to settle. Bits and pieces of solitary bubble lacing sticks around on the glass.

Smells like freshly squeezed apricots with a ton of vinegar and funk. It is very intensely apricot-like and not a subtle nose at all. It is brashly acidic and pulls no punches.

On the sweeter side, but a mighty complex sour. Sweet and tart in the beginning, like a fruit beer but in the background there is a lot of acidity, vinegar, oak and funk that just takes over as the beer lingers in the mouth beyond the first sip. Everything is still a bit messy with each component being strong and intense, which detracts a bit from my enjoyment of this beer. Perhaps some time would do it good.

Thinner bodied, good carbonation, nice tart oaky earthiness on the back end. The flavours are quite intense so this is a sipper.. enjoyable one at that.

As mentioned before the flavour components are all there in its full glory. Its not a subtle beer where everything interacts with each other well, but rather it is a brash beer that is tart, sweet, sour, acidic and funky all at the same time.. but it is not particularly complex. In all the jumble, a bit of the essence of this beer is lost. Perhaps some time will do it good.

2012 vintage served on tap into a snifter

A- Poured a cloudy tangerine orange with white head that dissipated instantly and left no lace.

S- Very astringent and sour aroma. Big sugary, sweet, and sour apricot notes, also a weird almost glue like smell.

T- This is one of the most intensely sour, tart, and astringent beers I have ever had. Big apricot and some Belgian yeast notes.

M- Very high carbonation, very dry, and medium body.

O- The sourness on this beer seemed to overwhelm some of the great flavors that I am sure are hidden underneath. I just didn't get much complexity that I would expect for a beer that spent so much time in the barrel.

2011 750ml bottle poured into a 51oz chalice.

Pours orange with a bleach blond 1/2" head.

Nose is wheat, musty oak, tropical fruits,

Flavor is tons of tropical fruit, lactic sour, white wine, oak.

Mouthfeel is pretty full bodied for a barrel-aged sour. Great carbonation.

Overall- excellent. The best Cascade sour I've had.
